Check out the calendar (page 8) for our up-coming events (page 5). Let s give Don Souther and Monette Thomann, a BIG thank you for the new counter, installed under the bulletin boards. Don built and installed it and Monette stained and finish it. Great job! Thanks to Mike and Jennifer for kicking off our Officer of the Day and Chris and Mandy, for following up on Sunday. Great food both days! The bar has been set, let s get signed up! It s not a competition just a great time, breakfast on the waterfront, can t be beat. Our first ever Friday night O.D. was hosted by Dave and Cathy Sarazen. The best tacos, with all the fix ins it was terrific, heck it was an event, a PRYC classic. Sign up to host your own O.D. and check the event calendar for all the other great events coming this summer. The new cash register is up and running and we still have all those beautiful photos to look at while sitting at the bar enjoying a cold one. PRYC is a great little club and it has come a long way over the years. It takes all of us to keep it running, and so far you all have been doing a great job in keeping it the best little club around. We do know how to party and yet the club can be such a nice and peaceful place to sit and look out over the harbor. Sitting inside or on the balcony with your feet up just gazing out over the water is so relaxing, could do it for hours. Come on down for the parties or for relaxation. See ya at the club! VICE COMMODORE Shelia Anderson Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs HIGH POINT 2012 SERIES The 2012 High Point Races is under way. The series consists of 16 races, 8 each at King Harbor and at Marina de Rey. The final scoring is based on the combined scores of 6 races. After 11 races PRYC own Don Souther is currently in 4 th place. There are only 5 races left. KENTUCKY DERBY DAY PARTY May 5, 2012 Port Royal members and friends brought wonderful pot-luck dishes, wore Kentucky Derby hats and enjoyed a great race. Attendees randomly picked cards from a bowl to find out which horse they were rooting for, as the winners enjoyed the spoils of free beverages. The standard fare at the bar was supplemented with special drinks for the occasion: Mint Juleps and Stella Artois lagers. After a wonderful lunch and a few warmup races, it was finally time for the big event. What a come-from-behind victory for our favorite horse: "I'll Have Another". Congratulations to Denny and Jamie as they were the big winners! Thanks to everyone for supporting the event. Director Scott Dow KING HARBOR SEA FAIR May 20, 2012 The 2012 Sea Fair event was an outstanding success. Sea Fair is an annual event presented by the King Harbor boating community to promote boating safety and safety on the water. This year there were over fifty clubs, organizations and business at the fair, the largest participation by the boating community to date. There was live music, sail boat and outrigger rides, standup paddleboard lessons, kid s crafts and activities, a Coast Guard helicopter rescue demonstration, and lots of boating safety and information booths. ISTHMUS CRUISE WITH LSFYC May 18-20, 2012 On May 18 through the 20 th the club along with the Little Ships and Marina Sailing Club cruised to the Isthmus for a get together and Barbeque. Seven boats from the club joined up for the event. A group of members took a hike to the backside of the island to look for bald eagles, none were sighted. However, Craig and Debbie Allsopp were able to view the baby eagles via the eagle cam that is located in the office of the Banning House Lodge. Kevin Herink brought the delicious tri-tip for club members, marinated and cooked it along with Craig. Little Ships brought the paper goods/utensils Marina Sailing brought the Mai Tais. We were very fortunate to have exceptionally warm weather that weekend. We all had a great time. The Isthmus was hosting a fishing tournament that same weekend so we all stuck around to see what was brought in. Our old friend Gordon participated in the tournament and brought in a nice halibut for a third place finish. Good job Gordon! Director Craig Allsopp So who had the best booth? Well, Port Royal, of course! Sure, we passed out boat safety information and talked about our club. We even showed surf movies on a flat screen TV. But the hit of the day was the 100 squirt guns we passed out to all the kids. Being kids, they were a little gun shy at first, but when some of the adults got their hands on the little squirters, a water war was on. Even grandparents got into the action! We really had a fun day that seemed to pass much too quickly. Be sure to come out next year and the hell with those little squirt guns, I m going packing a water cannon! CELEBRATION OF THE SEA A BIG SUCCESS May 27, 2012 The Celebration of the Sea Bouillabaisse fundraiser for the Animo Marine Biology Club was held as scheduled May 27 th at the club. It was a big success. We raised $1746 for Animo and made their trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium possible. Many PRYC club members, Sea Divers, Animo Club members, and some friends of Animo attended the event. The bouillabaisse was the best we ve had in recent years. We fed 86 people at the event. To view a short video of the event, go to https://vimeo.com/43141952 The kids from the club really appreciated it and they sent me a bunch of thank you notes, one from each of them. I have a couple I will share with you; Lobsterdon & Urchin Cathy, This trip is one of the most phenomenal opportunities for club members and it is a chance for us to discover the natural laboratory that is Monterey Bay. I get to be Ed Ricketts for a weekend thanks to your efforts! Christine X. Munoz c/o 2012 Senior!UC Berkeley Bound! Thank you so much for the donation. This trip means a lot to me because we get to go to an environment and learn. I learn best when I have a really good visual. I also get to go to new places and my experience grows. Thank you for supporting our club and future scientist, Sincerely, Jacelyn Funes If anybody wants to see all of the notes, I ll have them on my boat and you can ask me at the club to see them. Cathy and I would personally like to thank the Bridge, board of directors, club members, and marina for approving this event, promoting it, providing the facility, and attending and donating to the cause. It s very nice when you can have this much fun and also do some good for a worthy cause. Special thanks to LingcodLarry for providing the fish and to all the guests who helped at the event and contributed food and money. LobsterDon & UrchinCathy MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY May 28, 2012 At noon on Memorial Day, Treasurer Tom Fraser & his wife Maria hosted a short ceremony to raise a special flag. This flag was the casket flag from a sailor who lost his life defending his country in Vietnam. It came over the Pacific on his casket and was subsequently kept on a family member s sailboat for many years. Thanks to Bob Carlson, the flag was saved when the boat was being decommissioned. Unfortunately, the name of the sailor was lost to history, but now it stands for all members of our military who have given their lives defending our country. About 12 people attended and really liked the ceremony. The wind was just right to allow the flag to fly and wave in the wind. John Rubasky commented like it was moving to the sound of Whitney Houston singing the national anthem (we used her famous recording from the Superbowl). People in the parking lot and the docks stopped and put their hands to the hearts. John fired the cannon and everyone applauded! Please join us as we will do this again at noon on Independence Day, July 4th. Treasurer Tom Fraser I LOVE THIS BAR The best little bar in the west! This seems like another good time to say thank you to all our members who are helping to keep our club successful. Because of everyone s hard work and diligence it will not be necessary to make any changes or increases and therefore we will still remain the best little bar in the west! If you ve been to the club lately you will have seen our new cash register. It s easy to use. Just punch the key that states what you would like, for example can beer and then press the green button on the lower right. Your total will appear on both little screens in front of you. If you are purchasing multiple drinks, press multiple keys, for example; You would like two can beers, one white wine box and one well drink. Press the button can beer twice, then the white wine box button once, and then press the well drink button once then press the green button, your total for the drinks will be displayed. It s that simple. PRYC June 2012 Connections Page 4

Saturday, August 11, 2012, Noon -? Host: Vice Commodore, Shelia Anderson June 16, 2012 In 2005, Port Royal Yacht Club was honored to be invited by the Bay View Boat Club of San Francisco to host the first annual Southern California Plastic Classic Regatta. Sponsored by the Bay View Boat Club and run in the SF South Bay between Pier 54 and Alameda, the Plastic Classic has a history of slightly zany behavior, maybe that's why they thought that PRYC would fit right in! Read more about the original Plastic Classic Regatta. At present the only 'history' we've been able to set down is recorded on a video posted on youtube. The link is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijb9hrnasvc. CAL YACHT CLUB CRUISE June 22-24, 2012 We can show up at Cal YC with your boat any time after noon on Friday, June 22 and must depart our slips by 9:00 am Sunday, June 24. I will put up a signup sheet on the board at the club, or people who are going to come can email me at lastresort@jps.net. I prefer using the signup sheet because it keeps everything in one place. What I need is size/type of boat, estimated arrival time, number of people coming to the dinner at the club Saturday night, and a cell phone number where you can be reached to receive slip assignments. Nothing formal is planned for Friday, but you can eat at the club that night if you like. Saturday afternoon there will be a dock party starting at 3:00 pm, then dinner at the club starting at 6:30 PM. If you are not coming by boat, show up at the club in your car and enjoy the festivities anyway on Saturday. Bruce Stafford Fleet Captain 310-220-9607 SHIPs STORE If you re going to the yacht club for an event, make sure to check out the ships store. We still have a few windbreakers available, women s polos, and men s t-shirts, all embroidered with the PRYC logo. Keep an eye out for our new summer line of goodies!
