The Huskies, picked to finish eighth in the PSAC East preseason coaches poll, will look to rely on a core group of sophomores along with some key seniors. LAST TIME OUT BU fell to Division I Binghamton University 54-49 on Saturday afternoon in its final exhibition before tonight s season opener. The Huskies began the game on an 8-0 run and led most of the first half. The BU defense played tough, not allowing the Bearcats to score until the 14:40 mark of the first half. Fr. F Ed Hall led all scorers with 11 points and added 9 rebounds and Sr. G Greg Elliott added 10 points for the Huskies. THE CAPTAINS Sr. G Ruben Britt, Sr. G Greg Elliott and So. G Jesse Betar have been named tri-captains for the Huskies 2009-10 season. He also totaled 91 rebounds and 20 steals. Elliott sat out last season after coming to BU from Champlain College-St. Lambert in Montreal, Quebec. Averaging 12.0 points and 4.0 boards per game, he helped lead his team to two third place finishes at the CCAA National Championships. Betar averaged 7.3 ppg and had 65 assists and 32 steals while playing 24 games as a freshman last season. He earned PSAC East Freshman of the Week honors for games ending Jan. 24 and shot 37.5 percent from three-point range. IN THE MIDDLE So. F Larry Webster tied for second on the team in scoring last year with 12.2 ppg and was first in rebounds (9.1 pg) and blocks (34). Webster was named PSAC East Freshman of the Week five times last season and shot 58.9 percent from the field. BEYOND THE ARC Three players shot over 37.0 percent from three-point range during the 2008-09 season. So. G Jordan Wartman led the Huskies shooting 41.2 percent (14-34) from beyond the arc. Betar shot 37.5 percent (15-40) and So. G Ronnie Benson 37.1 percent (39-105). As a team, BU hit seven three-pointers in a game 15 times, including going 7-of-10 in a 71-63 win over Lock Haven. PLAYING D Six different Huskies registered at least 20 steals last season, helping BU rack up 224 steals on the season. 10 times the Huskies made at least 10 steals, including a season-high 23 in a 96-71 win over Penn State-Hazleton. Drew Jerry, who has graduated, led the Huskies with 34 steals last season while Betar was second with 32. So. G Trevon Johnson was third on the team with 29 steals in just nine games. THE FRESHMEN Four true freshmen will look for playing time for the Huskies in G Jamar Smack, G/F Dontahe Jordan, F Ed Hall and F Jesse Walsh. Smack was a two-year starter at State College and is the only point guard in school history to lead his team to two consecutive district championships. As a senior, Jordan was third team all-state, leading his team to a District 4 Championship. He totaled 738 points and 477 rebounds in his high school career. Hall is an all-league player from just outside of Washington, D.C. who averaged 16 points and 11 boards as a senior. Walsh is a four-time first team Lackawanna League and averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks per game for his career.
SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS Chestnut Hill returns all five starters from last year s team and welcome in six new freshmen. The Griffins will be led on the court by Sr. G Julian McFadden, who led the team in scoring (11.6 ppg) and assists (3.3 apg) last season. So.
