Worthen Arena (11,500) A Look at the Cardinals Ball State has won three straight games, including a 90-54 victory Wednesday over IU Kokomo. The team is averaging 80.0 points per game while shooting 46.4 percent from the floor and 81.8 percent from the free throw line during the three-game winning streak. The Cardinals welcome a Valparaiso team that is receiving votes in the latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings. The Crusaders split two games out West earlier in the week with a loss Sunday at No. 21 Oregon (73-67) and a win at Oregon State (63-57). Last year s Horizon League champion, Valpo was the preseason pick to win the league again. Saturday s game against Valparaiso is the second of five straight at home for Ball State. It s part of a stretch in which the Cardinals will play eight of nine at Worthen Arena. Junior forward Franko House has scored double figures in 16 of his past 18 games dating back to last season, including the last five in a row. Junior wing Ryan Weber has scored double figures in all four of his games this season, his first with the Cardinals. Weber (14.8 ppg), House (13.7) and senior forward Bo Calhoun (11.2) are all averaging double figures. Calhoun owns two double-doubles in the early going to lead the MAC in that category. His 4.5 offensive rebounds per game lead the MAC and rank 15th in the country. Over the past four games, Ball State has recorded assists on 73 of its 106 made field goals (69.9 percent. Last Time Out MUNCIE, Ind. -- If strong fundamentals count for anything in basketball and you would be hardpressed to find anyone to dispute that the Ball State men s team has shown so far this season that it is capable of playing with that kind of discipline. The Cardinals gave a sound performance in several areas Wednesday night in Worthen Arena when they beat IU Kokomo 90-54 for their third straight victory. The most notable of the good things Ball State accomplished was transitioning from defense to offense. With the deepest bench third-year coach James Whitford has had to work with, the Cardinals (4-2) capitalized on their up tempo style. They ran their way into good shots to hit 51.7 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point line. They made a season-low seven turnovers and dished out a season-best 23 assists. A quality effort, indeed, for a team that last season tied for seventh in the Mid-American Conference in assistto-turnover ratio. Most definitely it was fun; it s a style of play our guys are used to, first-year Cardinal Ryan Weber, a transfer from Youngstown State, said of the up tempo attack. We have the players to do it, and we re deep enough where if players get gassed we can sub and keep going. Point guard Jeremiah Davis sparked the transition game off the bench by dealing a careerhigh eight assists while committing just two turnovers in 23 minutes. He also added 11 points while shaking a shooting slump by making 4-of-6 field goals. Whitford liked the way the game flowed in transition. He said this year s team is much better in two areas playing man defense and turning defense into instant offense. We re a deep team and we can come at you in waves, Whitford said. If you re not a team that can play as many guys as us, we want to be able to wear you out over the course of 40 minutes by having a good transition game and being great defensively. The Cardinals ran to a 44-26 halftime lead after a slow start on defense the first four minutes. They led by 33 points with 12:06 to play in the second half, and increased the margin to as many as 39 late in the game. Ball State s numbers stacked up well in many areas against the overmatched Cougars (0-5). The Cardinals posted season highs in field-goal percentage (.517), 3-point field-goal percentage (.500) and free-throw percentage (.864). Eleven players found the scoring column, with Franko House leading the way with 16 points. Bo Calhoun added 14, Weber had 13 (a team-high seven rebounds) and Davis added 11. Francis Kiapway had a career-best four steals and Jeremie Tyler tied his career best with three steals. The Cardinals have outscored their opponents 63-25 at the stripe during that stretch. In the first three games of the season, Ball state was 39 of 62 from the foul line, while its opponents were 64 of 89. Weber Debuts Junior forward Ryan Weber has scored double figures in all four games since making his Ball State debut. The Youngstown State transfer hit four 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 19 points in his first game Nov. 20 against Eastern Kentucky. He is leading the Cardinals in scoring at 14.8 points per game. House is Money Franko House shot 74.1 percent from the floor over Ball State s three games at last weekend s @EKUHoops Classic. House was 8 for 9 against Eastern Kentucky, 6 for 7 against Longwood and 6 for 11 against South Carolina State. For the season, he leads the Cardinals and ranks fourth in the MAC at 62.0 percent from the floor. Finishing Games Ball State s free throw shooting down the stretch played a big role in its wins in the final two games of last weekend s @EKUHoops Classic. Ball State went 10 for 10 at the stripe in the final four minutes Saturday against Longwood and 12 for 15 over the last four minutes Sunday against South Carolina State. Over the past three games, the Cardinals have shot 88.9 percent at the stripe (24 for 27) in the final four minutes. Hitting the Glass Since being beaten on the boards in the season opener at Bradley, Ball State has outrebounded five straight opponents, including three by double digits -- Eastern Illinois (11), Longwood (10) and South Carolina State (10). The Cardinals are +41 on the boards during that four-game stretch and +38 for the season. Creating Second Chances Bo Calhoun leads the MAC and ranks 15th nationally with an average of 4.5 offensive rebounds per game. Calhoun grabbed a career-high eight offensive rebounds in the Nov. 16 win over Eastern Illinois. The Cardinals had a season-high 18 offensive boards as a team in that game. Calhoun s eight offensive rebounds were the most by a Ball State player since Majok Majok grabbed nine against Oakland City on Jan. 3, 2014. They were the most by a Cardinal against a Division I opponent since Aaron Adeoye had eight against Miami on Feb. 4, 2012. Twin Double-Doubles Bo Calhoun (17 pts/12 rebs) and Sean Sellers (13 pts/10 rebs) both recorded double-doubles in the Nov. 16 win over Eastern Illinois. It was the first career double-double for Sellers, who set a career high with his 10 boards. It was the first time Ball State had two players with double-doubles in the same game since Feb. 23, 2013 at Southeast Missouri -- Matt Kamieniecki (12/14) and Chris Bond (11/11). Calhoun went on to add his second doubledouble of the year with 16 points and 13 rebounds Sunday against South Carolina State. Big-Time Bench Production Ball State s bench has outscored the opponents bench in five of the team s six games this season with the lone exception being the game at Eastern Kentucky. The Cardinals bench outscored that of Eastern Illinois 36-8 in the second game of the season. Bo Calhoun (17 points) and Francis Kiapway (12) both went for double figures off the bench in the Eastern Illinois game. The Cardinals have had a total of five doublefigure scoring performances by individuals off the bench this season. Calhoun Keeps Rolling Bo Calhoun is averaging 11.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, continuing a trend of strong play that dates back to the second half of last season. Over the final 15 contests last year, Calhoun led the team in points (13.4) and rebounds (7.3) per game. In the first 15 games, he averaged 5.8 points and 4.6 rebounds. Over his past 21 games, he has scored in double figures 16 times and posted five doubledoubles. Seven different players have registered at least one double-figure scoring game so far. Cardinals Sign Kyle Mallers Ball State inked Fort Wayne, Ind., product Kyle Mallers to a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period. Mallers, a 6-foot-7 wing from Carroll High School, was one of the core six members of the Indiana Junior All-Stars last season. BALL STATE TRADITION 1st NCAA Sweet 16 Ball State was the first MAC team to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after the field expanded to 64 teams. The Cardinals, who reached that round in 1990, are one of five MAC teams to make the Sweet 16 since then. 6 MAC Regular Season Championships (since 1980) Only Miami (eight) has more MAC regular season titles since 1980. 7 MAC Tournament Championships The most of any team in league history. His 3-point percentage ranked second in the nation among freshmen with at least three attempts per game. The Cardinals return 10 players from last year s roster, including six who averaged at least six points per game. Last year, the Cardinals ranked among the 25 youngest teams in the country. Cardinals Add Veterans Ball State bolstered its returning roster with a pair of veteran transfers in junior college point guard Naiel Smith and fifth-year big man Nate Wells. Smith played his freshman season at Texas State before transferring to San Jacinto College. He was an honorable mention all-region selection in leading San Jacinto to the NJCAA national tournament. Wells graduated from Bradley and had a year of eligibility remaining. He emerged as the Braves starting center down the stretch last season. Ball State added another transfer in point guard Tayler Persons, who will sit out the season after joining the Cardinals from Northern Kentucky. He was last year s Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year. Freshmen, Too Ball State added some size with this year s freshman class, welcoming 6-foot-8 Tahjai Teague and 6-foot-9 Trey Moses. The Cardinals plan to redshirt Teague this season. He was an Indiana All-Star at Pike High School in Indianapolis and was rated as the No. 103 recruit nationally by 247Sports. Moses joined the Cardinals from Eastern High School in Louisville, Ky. He was rated as highly as No. 3 in the state of Kentucky s 2015 recruiting class by Mid-American Basketball Consultants. 7

JAMES WHITFORD Head Coach (Third Season) The Whitford File COACHING HISTORY April 2013-Present Head Coach Ball State University 2011-13 Associate Head Coach Arizona 2009-11 Assistant Coach Arizona 2005-09 Assistant Coach Xavier 1998-2005 Assistant Coach Miami University 1994-96 Administrative Assistant Miami University ** 400-208 career record as an assistant coach 10 NCAA Tournaments & 13 total postseason appearances EDUCATION Wisconsin, 1994 Bachelor s in Political Science Miami University, 1996 Master s in Sports Studies Former University of Arizona associate head coach James Whitford was introduced as the 19th men s basketball coach in Ball State history on April 10, 2013. In his career as an assistant coach at Arizona, Xavier and Miami University, Whitford s teams posted an overall record of 400-208, reached the NCAA tournament 10 times and played in the postseason 13 times. Whitford has laid the foundation for the future at Ball State, installing his system and ramping up the Cardinals recruiting efforts. His first two Ball State teams have been heavy on youth, with the 2014-15 squad ranking among the 25 youngest in the country. Both teams featured the MAC Freshman of the Year, including Sean Sellers in 2014-15. Whitford signed a 2014 freshman class that included three state champions, a prep school national runner up and, for the first time at Ball State since 1996, two Indiana All-Stars. Scout.com recruiting analyst Brian Snow said of the group, Ball State s 2014 recruiting class is one of the best mid-major recruiting classes in the country. The future is bright in Muncie. Whitford has now recruited four former Indiana All-Stars to Ball State -- Sellers, Jeremie Tyler, Tahjai Teague and Tayler Persons. In the decade prior to Whitford s arrival, the Cardinals signed a total of three Indiana All-Stars. The 2015-16 season marks the first time the Ball State roster has included four Indiana All-Stars since 2001-02. Whitford served four years on the staff at Arizona, including his final two as the associate head coach. He was with Arizona head coach Sean Miller for eight seasons, dating back to Miller s days guiding the Xavier program. Whitford also brought more than a decade of experience with the Mid-American Conference, having served on the staff at Miami University under Herb Sendek and Charlie Coles for 11 seasons before joining Miller at Xavier. Whitford helped Arizona to an average of 27 wins per season over his final three years in Tucson, including a 30-win campaign in 2010-11 that featured a Pac-10 Conference championship and an appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. He served as recruiting coordinator at Arizona and helped the program consistently land nationally ranked signing classes. The Wildcats 2012 class was rated as high as third in the country. Whitford was in charge of developing Arizona s post players, one of whom, Derrick Williams, became the No. 2 overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft. Before heading West, Whitford helped the Xavier program to an impressive run during his four years in Cincinnati. The Musketeers posted an overall record of 103-35, won three Atlantic 10 Conference championships and played in the NCAA Tournament all four years, reaching the Elite Eight in 2007-08. ON THE BENCH Jason Grunkemeyer Associate Head Coach Third Season Miami University, 2001 A former standout at Miami, Grunkemeyer was previously an assistant coach with the RedHawks and at Saint Louis. He played at Miami when James Whitford was an assistant coach on the staff and helped the RedHawks to the Sweet 16 in 1999. He later served five years on the Miami staff under Charlie Coles. Brian Thornton Assistant Coach Second Season Xavier, 2005 A former Academic All-American at Xavier, Thornton joined the Ball State staff in May 2014 after two years at Winthrop. He helped the Eagles to a 20-win season in 2013-14. Thornton also had previous stops as director of basketball operations Xavier and assistant coach at Furman. He played at both Vanderbilt and Xavier, scoring more than 500 points at each school. Danny Peters Assistant Coach Second Season Ohio State, 2010 Peters joined the Ball State staff in June 2014 after serving the previous two years as the assistant director of basketball operations at Arizona. Peters earned his bachelor s degree from Ohio State in 2010. He originally worked as a manager with the Buckeyes before joining the team s active roster as a player for his final four years in Columbus, Ohio. Jaron Henry Director of Operations Third Season Arizona, 2011 Henry joined the Ball State staff after spending the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant at Kent State. He previously served as a student manager at Arizona when James Whitford was on the Wildcats staff. 12
