Dear Community Club Leaders: The 4-H Livestock Judging Day is designed to give 4-H members experience in evaluating different livestock, dairy and horse species and placing them in correct order of market, breeding and/or conformation value. The event is scheduled, rain or shine, for Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the College of the Sequoias School Farm, 2245 South Linwood, Visalia. Enclosed in this pamphlet you will find rules for the event and illustrations showing the ideal livestock animal vs. common faults. Lunch will be a Deep Pit sandwich, a drink and chips for $7.00. Pre- sales are encouraged on entry summary sheet. Drinks and snacks will available for sale through-out the day. 4-H LIVESTOCK JUDGING DAY RULES 1. 4-H Livestock Judging Day will be held Saturday, December 10, 2011, at the COLLEGE OF THE SEQUOIAS SCHOOL FARM, 2245 South Linwood, Visalia. 2. PARTICIPANTS. Participants entering for judging must be enrolled as a Tulare County 4-H member, at least 9 years old or in the 4 th grade as of December 31, 2011 and older. 3. **NOTE** Mini Members : MINI MEMBERS CAN PARTICIPATE IN THE JUDGING. THEY ARE REQUIRED TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT. MINI MEMBERS CANNOT MOVE UP TO BE ON A TEAM. 4. POINT OF CONTACT. One person from each 4-H club will be designated as the club Point of Contact (POC). Prior to the event, the POC is responsible for taking all entries within the club and assigning members on teams within their appropriate grade. The POC is responsible for submitting all names to the event registrar by the entry deadline. On the day of the event, the POC is responsible for arriving on time, picking up the club packet(s) from the registration table, and making any corrections or changes to individual or team entries. 5. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT TO PARTICIPATE. THERE IS A $2.00 REGISTRATION FEE TO HELP PAY FOR AWARDS. 4-H MEMBERS AND ADULTS CANNOT REGISTER THE DAY OF THE EVENT. 6. ONLY ONE CHANGE OF JUDGING TEAM MEMBERS will be allowed on the day of the event. A 4-H member, who has not pre-registered, may not be substituted for pre-registered participants. 7. ENTRY DEADLINE. Each participant entered in the Livestock Judging Event will judge all species, which includes beef, sheep, swine, dairy cattle, meat goats, and horse. There will be six classes: four market classes, beef, sheep, swine and meat goat, one dairy class, and one horse class. 10. DIVISIONS. Each participant may enter only one grade division. Participants will compete in a division open to their grade in school. 1. Novice = 4th through 6th grade 2. Junior = 7th & 8th grade 3. Senior = 9th grade and up 4. Adult = 4-H leader or parent 4

11. TEAMS. Teams will be made up of four individuals within a grade division. When calculating the results, the highest three scores of the four team members will be taken and combined for the total team score. Three individuals can also make up a team, but four is more advantageous for scoring. A 4-H member may move up a grade division to fill a team, but they will also be judged individually at the older grade level (e.g. a 6th grader competing with and against junior division). A 4-H member may never move down an age division (e.g. a 7th grader can not compete in the novice division.) If you do not have enough to make a team (e.g. only 2 participants in the Senior Division) go ahead and place them on the entry form titled "Senior". Their scores will be calculated anyway for their individual results. Team members must all be from the same club. 12. AWARDS. The awards presented are as follows: i. Awards First through fifth place ribbons will be awarded to each High Individual in a grade division and the members of each High Team. Top Reasons will be awarded first through fifth place per each grade division. ii. Medals - Medals (gold, silver, bronze) will be awarded to the top three High Individuals in the Novice, Junior, and Senior grade divisions. iii. SPECIAL AWARD - The LJD Committee will select a special top award, depending on funding, to be awarded to the High Individual in the Novice, Junior, and Senior grade division and the top three or four scores in each high team per division. 13. CLASSES. The species to be judged are: 1. Market Beef 4. Market Sheep 2. Market Swine 5. Market Goat 3. Dairy Cattle 6. Halter Horse 14. GROUPS. Participants will be broken down into groups which will rotate from class to class. Team members will be separated into different groups; Teams will not collectively judge classes. PARENTS ARE NOT TO COACH YOUTH. 15. JUDGING CARD. Each participant will receive a judging card like the one shown on the last page in book. On the day of the event, the judging card color will correspond to the participants division entered. Each participant will need to put their contestant number and group along with their name on their card the day of the event. Each card is pre-printed with the class number. When judging, the participant will be evaluating four different animals for each class. After the order of placement has been determined; the participant will put an X next to the appropriate combination of placing listed. For example, if the participant feels the placement from top quality to bottom is 2-4-3-1; they would place an X in the box next to that placing. See example on next page. 5

Example: 2-4-3-1 X Upon completion of judging the class, all judging cards will be given to the group leader. A runner then takes them to the control point for scoring. The participant is finished with judging when they have judged each of the classes and turned in their judging cards for scoring. There will be a 15 minute break for participants to formulate their reasons. Once that time period is over, participants will head to their designated reasons class or classes. 16. REASONS. Reasons will be included as part of the overall score for Novice, Junior, and Senior Divisions. You may choose not to do reasons; however, you will be missing the opportunity to gain additional points. It is highly recommended that members take part in this activity. Divisions will be the same as in Rule 10. The reasons class will be announced on the day of the event for livestock and dairy. 17. TIE BREAKERS. Tie breakers will be one reasons class which is pre-selected prior to the start of judging. For example, if market swine reasons is selected as the tie breaker, the two individuals/teams who are tied will be judged on who scored higher in that reasons class. Whoever scored highest on the swine class will be considered as having a higher score. Example of Market Lamb Reasons I placed this class of market lambs 3-1-2-4 starting with the longest bodied, most powerfully muscled lamb in the class. Ideally, my class winner could be smoother shouldered. Yet, I still used him over 1 in my top pair as he is a more rugged appearing, heavier muscled lamb who is thicker loined. I grant 1 has a more correct set to dock but I faulted him and placed him second when compared to 3. He is a somewhat light muscled lamb who is flat legged. However, in my middle pair I placed 1 over 2 as he is a deeper bodied, more correctly made lamb that is longer in the loin and a more level hip. I realize 2 is a heavier muscled, pounds heavy lamb, but I faulted him and placed him 3 rd as he is poor balanced, steeper in the hip, and weak in the pastern. Yet in my bottom pair I still placed 2 over 4 as 2 is a stouter made, heavier muscled lamb who is cleaner chested and tighter shouldered. I realized 4 is the largest lamb, but I faulted him and placed him last as he is the narrowest made, lightest boned, lightest carcass lamb in the class. 6

General Rules for Giving Reasons 1. Do not claim strong points for one animal unless it has them. Claim the points where it is superior and then grant to the other animal its points of advantage. 2. Emphasize the major difference strongly. Giving big differences first on each pair helps. 3. Be concise and definite. Don t hunt for things to say. If you don t remember, go on to the next pair you are to discuss. 4. Speak with confidence and without hesitation. Speak with enough enthusiasm to keep the judge interested. 5. Use correct terms for each class and breed. Do not use cattle terms for swine, for example. 6. End reasons strongly. Give a concise final statement as to why you place the last animal last. 7. Be sure you have your reasons well organized so you will not hesitate when you present them to the judge. 8. As you give your reasons to the judge, stand about 6 feet away from him/her. Stand with your feet spread apart, hands behind you, and look at the judge and talk to him/her. How Do I Organize and Give My Reasons? I place the class of -. I started with because in the class. In the top pair, I used over because was than. In the middle pair, I place over as s/he was than. I realize that was but I criticized and I placed him/her last because of the four. There is no need to: State Sir or Madam. Say Good Morning or Good Afternoon. Repeat your placing after completing oral reasons. 7

Horse Judging Halter: A halter class is defined as a class where the horse is judged based upon its conformation. The purpose of the class is to preserve breed type by selecting each horse in the order of their resemblance to the breed ideal and that are the most positive combination of breed character, balance, muscling, structural correctness, and sex character. The characteristics that are considered ideal vary from breed to breed. For example, the importance of muscling in Arabians is not as significant as in Quarter Horses. Conformation is defined as the physical appearance due to the arrangement of muscle, bone and other body tissues. Rating conformation depends upon objective evaluation of the following four traits: balance, structural correctness, degree of muscling, and breed and sex characteristics. Of the four, balance is the single most important, and refers to the structural and aesthetic blending of body parts. Balance is influenced almost entirely by skeletal structure. Location of Some Common Conformation Faults A vertical line from the point of the shoulder fall in the center of the knee, cannon, pastern, hoof. The correct conformation is shown at A; in B the forefeet toe out; in C the bowed legs are weak; D shows the extreme of knees set close together with toes pointing outward, horses with such conformation almost invariably interfere; E illustrates a form of conformation predisposing to interfering, called base-narrow; in F the knees are set close together, showing a tendency to knee hitting; while in G, the subject will wing or throw out his feet as they are elevated, which retards action. A vertical line from the center of the elbow joint should fall on the knee and pastern and back of the hoof, and a vertical line from the middle of the arm should fall on the center of the hoof. A, represents the right conformation; B shows forelegs too far under the body; in C they are too far advanced; in D, the subject is knee-sprung; and in E is illustrated what is commonly known as calf leg. Knee-sprung horses are apt to stumble; calf-legged horses often are sore in their forelegs after they have been used awhile. 13

Viewed from the rear, the hind legs have the greatest strength when they have the direction shown in A. This direction is correct when a vertical line from the point of the buttock crosses the center of the hock, cannon, pastern, and foot. B, shows hind legs set too far apart, tending to produce a sprawling gait. In C the hind feet tow in or are pigeon-toed, the joints being improperly formed, producing considerable undesirable lateral motion when the feet are carried forward. With such conformation the feet cannot be carried in a straight line. In D the hind legs are set too close together, predisposing the horse to interfere. The condition shown in E is generally known as cow hocked, and hind legs so formed do not have the strength of those in which the columns of bones are placed directly over one another. A vertical line from the hip joint should cross the center of the front and divide the gaskin in the middle; a vertical line from the point of the buttock should coincide with the back of the cannon as in A. In B, the hind legs stand too far under the body (sickle-hocked); in C, the hind legs are set too far back; and in D, the hock joint is too straight 14
