Game time has been moved back one-half hour to 12:30 p.m. PST. This is a battle of two teams with one WAC loss each. Last Week Fresno State extended its home winning streak to 14 games with a 45-27 win over Hawai'i. The Horned Frogs had their NCAA-best 12-game winning streak snapped with a 27-24 loss at San Jose State. All-Time vs. TCU The teams have met just twice with the home team winning each game. TCU won the firstever meeting 21-10 on Oct. 10, 1998, at Amon G. Carter Stadium. The Bulldogs won last season's game at Bulldog Stadium 26-19 in overtime. Last Time vs. TCU (Fresno Oct. 2, 1999) Fresno State never led the football game until overtime and trailed TCU 19-10 with less than six minutes to play, but All-WAC quarterback Billy Volek threw two touchdown passes to lead his team to a 26-19 overtime victory. Jeff Hanna kicked a 27-yard field goal with 5:23 remaining to pull the Bulldogs to within six points at 19-13. Volek then led the Bulldogs on a 57-yard drive, comsuming 3:06 of the clock, that was capped when Volek hit Rodney Wright on a 17-yard touchdown pass. The Bulldogs' potential game-winning extra point by Hanna's was blocked, forcing overtime. Volek used a 12-play drive in the first overtime to score a touchdown, a 7-yard pass to Charles Smith. The Bulldog defense stopped the Horned Frogs from getting into the endzone on a fourth down pass play when Terence Brown batted down a pass at the goal line. Bowl Bit Fresno State will be playing a 1999 bowl team for the second consecutive week. Last week, the Bulldogs defeated 1999 Oahu Bowl Champions Hawai'i 45-27. TCU won the Mobile, Ala., Bowl last season with a 28-14 victory over East Carolina. Ranked Opponents Fresno State will be playing a nationally ranked opponent for the third time this season, all three coming on the road. Fresno State lost to then No. 16 Ohio State 43-10 in the season opener. The Bulldogs followed that with a 24-21 loss to then No. 15 UCLA. TCU enters the week ranked No. 17 in the USA Today/ESPN poll. Fresno State's last win over a ranked opponent was against No. 17 Air Force, Oct. 18, 1997, a 20-17 win.

Head Coach Pat Hill All of the credit for the resurgence of Bulldog football can be traced to head coach Pat Hill. Hill took over a declining program and within three years won a championship and guided his team to a bowl game. More importantly, Hill infused academic integrity to the program. Since his arrival, the team GPA has steadily risen from a 2.21 to 2.77. Last season was the first significant step in the reclamation project. The Bulldogs earned a share of the WAC championship, made their first bowl appearance since 1993 and produced a league-best six first-team All-WAC players. In addition, Fresno State led the WAC academic scholars with 14 and produced the program's first Academic All-American, Payton Williams. Hill has worked as a tireless fund-raiser to improve the facilities. Under his direction, money was raised to build a new football practice facility that rivals any NFL franchise. In addition, the two soccer practice facilities received a face lift. One of the most visible signs of improvement has been in the Duncan Building training room, which was expanded and modified providing all student-athletes with a state of the art complex. Hill is in his fourth season at Fresno State but is no stranger to Bulldog football, having spent six seasons as an assistant coach (1984-89) under Jim Sweeney when the Bulldogs were among the nation's most successful teams. Fresno State posted a 53-16-1 overall record during those six seasons, won three league titles and three bowl games. Hill was Fresno State's offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. Hill became a hot young assistant coach and left FS to become offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Arizona (1991-92). After two seasons in Tucson, he left for the NFL where he spent five seasons (1992-96) as an assistant with the Cleveland Browns/Baltimore Ravens franchise. In addition, Hill was the offensive coordinator for the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL (1983), offensive coordinator/offensive line/recruiting coordinator at UNLV (1981-82), recruiting coordinator/offensive line coach at Utah (1977-80) and offensive line coach at L.A. Valley College (1974-76). Pat Hill's Resume 1997-present Fresno State, Head Coach 1996 Baltimore Ravens, Asst. Coach (tight ends/offensive line) 1992-95 Cleveland Browns, Asst. The Bulldogs are 2-12-1 all-time in the Lone Star State, including 1-1 this year after posting a 27-24 victory at Rice on Oct. 5 and falling at UTEP 23-13 on Oct. 21. FS is 0-1 all-time in games at Amon G. Carter Stadium, having fallen to the Horned Frogs 21-10 in 1998. vs. Ranked Teams Under Pat Hill The Bulldogs are 1-4 against ranked teams under Pat Hill, including losses earlier this year to then-no. 15 Ohio State and then-no. 16 UCLA. Other Bulldogs losses against ranked teams have come against the Bruins in 1999 and Colorado to open the 1998 season. Fresno State s only victory over a ranked opponent came in 1997, Hill s first at the helm, when the Bulldogs upset 18th-ranked Air Force 20-17. FS has not played a ranked team at home under Hill. Rodney Who? When wide receiver Rodney Wright went down with a calf strain prior to Fresno State s game with Nevada on Oct. 14, there were questions about how Fresno State would replace his bigplay capability. With the emergence of Bernard Berrian, those questions have been answered. Since Wright went down, Berrian has joined Charles Smith as the Bulldogs go-to receiver. In his last four games, Berrian has posted 20 catches for 347 yards, an average of 17.4 per catch. In addition, the sophomore has proved to be as exciting a wideout as there is in the WAC. He has touchdown grabs of 55 and 71 yards and a punt return for 88 yards he returned for a touchdown. Berrian has also racked up 100 receiving yards in three of his past four games. Against Hawai i, he set career-highs in receptions (8) and yards (123). Following a breakdown of Berrian s last four games: No Yds Avg TD Long vs. Nevada... 5 102 20.4 1* 55 at UTEP... 2 12 6.0 0 7 vs. Tulsa... 5 110 22.0 1 71 vs. Hawai i... 8 123 15.4 1 42 Totals... 20 347 17.4 3 71 * does not include an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown Success at Bulldog Stadium Fresno State s 45-27 victory over Hawai i on Saturday gave the Bulldogs their 14th consecutive victory at Bulldog Stadium, a winning streak which ranks third-best in the nation. FS has not lost at home since falling 27-24 to Nevada on Sept. 26, 1998. Since, Fresno State has posted home victories over teams such as Hawai i (twice), Colorado State, BYU and TCU. Following are the top home winning streaks in the nation: No Team Win Streak 1) Florida State...34 2) Oregon...19 3) Fresno State... 14 Taking the Attendance to Another Level After tying for the conference championship and receiving a berth in the EA Sports Las Vegas Bowl, the Red Wave has come out in droves to support the Bulldogs this season. In addition to setting program records for season tickets sold, Fresno State currently ranks second among West Coast schools and 21st in the nation in percent of stadium capacity filled. Through their first two games, the Bulldogs have filled Bulldog Stadium (41,031) at 101.55 percent capacity. Fresno State currently ranks above perennial powers Florida State (23rd), Notre Dame (24th), and Georgia (26th). Since the 1997 season, Pat Hill's first as head coach, Fresno State is 18-3 at Bulldog Stadium and have outscored their opponents by a combined 740-363 for a margin of victory of 35-16. In addition, the 'Dogs are drawing well, averaging 37,198 fans per game since 1997. This season, the Bulldogs shattered their single-season ticket sales record with 30,400, more than 2,000 over the previous record. In their first four games of the season, the Bulldogs have drawn the four largest crowds in school history, with a record of 42,285 vs. Cal. Over the Hill Under Pat Hill, the Bulldogs are 18-3 at home and 13-1 in WAC home games with 11 consecutive home WAC wins. The only WAC team to win at Bulldog Stadium was San Diego State, 20-19 in 1997. His.857 home winning percentages is the best in Fresno State history of coaches with more than three years experience. His conference home winning percentage of.929 is also best in school history. The Bulldogs three home losses over the last four seasons combined to equal the number of home losses Fresno State suffered in 1996, the season before Hill took over as head coach. WAC Coaching Leader Pat Hill is the active WAC coaching leader in winning percentage with a record of 19-9 (.679). Here's how the other WAC coaches with one full year of experience rank. Overall (years) Current School (years) Ken Hatfield, Rice 34-31 (22) (.523) 22-15 (5) (.595) Dennis Franchione, TCU 34-34 (10) (.500) 13-7 (3) (.650) Mike Cavan, SMU 13-14 (3) (.481) 13-14 (3) (.481) June Jones, Hawai'i 6-8 (2) (.429) 6-8 (2) (.429) Dave Baldwin, San Jose St. 13-15 (3) (.464) 13-15 (3) (.464) In Case You Missed It Rodney Wright, who had missed three games with a calf injury, was expected to play against Hawai'i but reinjured the muscle in pregame warm-ups and did not play. He is questionable this week...fresno State's 45 consecutive points against the Warriors was the most since 1991 when it scored 45 points to start the game in a 94-17 win over New Mexico...the attendance of 42,160 was the second-highest in school history. It was the fourth consecutive sellout, which is a school record...the Bulldogs have scored at least 24 points in 13 of its last 14 home games. The only game which they did not score 24 points was a 17-3 win over California on Sept. 23, 2000...Fresno State's average home score this season is 39-16...Terence Brown got his second blocked kick in as many weeks, running his career total to six. He was named WAC Special Teams Player of the Week. His block resulted in an 81-yard return for touchdown by Dante Marsh. It was Marsh's second defensive touchdown this season...bernard Berrian had a career-high 123 receiving yards against Hawai'i. He has had 100-yards or more in three of the last four games since replacing Rodney Wright...David Carr surpassed 2,000 passing yards in his career. He needs 228 yards for 2,000 this season. Carr's.627 career completion percentage is ahead of FS record holder Billy Volek, who completed.604 of his career pass attempts...the Bulldogs needs just 31,024 fans in the final home game against SMU to break the single season average attendance record of 39,536 set in 1993. No Holding Harper Junior defensive tackle Alan Harper was a one-man wrecking crew during his sophomore season, earning first-team All-WAC honors, making him the youngest player selected. Harper, who as the potential to become the best defensive lineman in school history, was Fresno State's nominee for WAC Defensive Player of the Year honors after recording 15 tackles for losses, second-most in school history and second-most in the WAC. He is a consensus preseason All-WAC selection and was rated the 20th best defensive tackle in the nation by The Sporting News, one of seven underclassmen honored. Harper has 10 tackles for losses (-37), which ranks third in the WAC. Orlando Magic Senior outside linebacker Orlando Huff has been simply dominating this season. He was selected a Midseason All-American by Pro Football Weekly. Fresno State Facts Bulldog Stadium at Jim Sweeney Field Since taking over Bulldog Stadium in 1980, Fresno State has one of the best home records in college football. One of the most beautiful stadiums in the Western Athletic Conference, Bulldog Stadium underwent a two-phase expansion project in 1991, increasing seating by 10,000 - to a capacity of 41,031 - and adding 22 sky suites. Jim Sweeney was Fresno State s head coach (1976-77, 1980-96) who won eight conference championships, five bowl game titles and guided the Bulldogs to a 143-75-3 record and won 200 games as a college coach, 16th most in NCAA history, including stints at Montana State and Washington State. The Bulldogs have been undefeated in nine of 20 seasons in Bulldog Stadium, including 1999. This pride can be seen in the form of a large green V on the back of the Bulldog helmets as a symbol to the agricultural community of Central Valley of California. The San Joaquin Valley is the world's richest agricultural valley in export dollars. Academic Gameplan Since Pat Hill took over the Fresno State program, the Bulldogs have become leaders in academic success. One of Hill's first tasks was hiring John Baxter as associate head coach. Baxter's trademarked Academic Gameplan is a proven winner across the nation. In the third years of Academic Gameplan, the football program produced a WAC-best 14 scholar-athletes, the school's first Academic All-American and the number of honored athletes at the annual Kiwanis Torch of Excellence dinner grew from four to 33. The team's GPA was raised from 2.12 to 2.77 in three seasons. Academic Gameplan has been featured in many publications, including the Dec. 20, 1999, issue of Sports Illustrated. Nine of Fresno State's 14 seniors are on track to graduate in December. Academic Gameplan is used by Oregon, Washington State, Southern Miss and is being implemented by Notre Dame. The Bulldog Foundation Fresno State's famous Bulldog Foundation has been the No. 1 fund-raising organization in the nation for 14 consecutive years. This volunteer organization raises over $7 million annually for the Fresno State Athletics Department. The BDF is headed by executive director Pat Ogle, the 1996 National Fundraiser of the Year. The monies raised by the BDF go towards scholarships, recruiting and special needs of the athletics department. Fresno State Identification The official name of the school is California State University, Fresno. For athletics department purposes, the University prefers to be called simply Fresno State never Fresno State University. For graphics or abbreviations, we ask that you please use FS not FSU or CSUF. Counting on Carr Junior quarterback David Carr continues to develop each week. He is coming off his best performance as a Bulldog, completing over 82 percent of his passes (23-28) and accounting for four touchdowns in a 45-27 win over Hawai'i. He ranks 33rd in the NCAA in total offense (228.8 yards per game) and is third in the WAC and 19th in the NCAA, in passing efficiency (135.9). Carr, who has played in just 19 games in his three-year career, redshirted last season and worked with the Bulldog scout teams, earning the scout team MVP award given by the coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said the best quarterback the Bulldog defense faced last season was Carr. In addition, Carr spend the entire season in the coaching booth on a headset with offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig learning more about the offense. Before this season, Carr had completed 27-52 passes for 281 yards and one touchdown and two interceptions in his career. Carr could be the best all-around athlete to play quarterback for the 'Dogs ever. He bench presses 390 pounds, power cleans 300 pounds and squats 500 pounds. At 6-3, 225 pounds, he runs a 4.67 40-yard dash. Carr by the Numbers Year G-GS Att. Comp Int Yds. Pct. Skipper is an excellent student who has been a WAC scholar-athlete. Despite being the smallest middle linebacker in the country (5-7, 215 lbs.), Skipper has played very large throughout his career. Skipper, who has started 34 of 37 games in his career, was a first-team All-WAC selection as a sophomore and despite missing two-and-a-half games and four starts with a knee injury, was selected second-team All-WAC last season. He had started 27 consecutive games before the injury. He finished second on the team in tackles last season with 86, missing his third consecutive 100-tackle season. With his 12-tackle performance against Cal, Skipper moved into second place on the Fresno State career tackle chart. He was a consensus preseason All-WAC selection and called the WAC's Most Underrated Player by The Sporting News. Skipper is a nominee for both the Butkus Award and the Nagurski Award. Jordan, who started 12 games at right tackle last season, started the season at left tackle to protect David Carr's blind side, but moved back to right tackle before the Cal game to match-up against All- American Andre Carter. Jordan, a defensive tackle in his first two years in the program, is a good athlete who ran a 4.7 40-yard dash as a defensive lineman. He currently runs just under 5.0 seconds. Jordan is very strong, bench pressing 405 pounds. He was outstanding through the first three quarters of the Cal game before leaving with cramps. Jordan held Carter to just two tackles. Jordan was given a "Bad Dog" Award for his performance against Nevada, who called his game "the best performance by an offensive linemen in four years" by line coach Dennis Wagner. He has allowed just two quarterback sacks in his career, just one last season in over 340 pass plays. He has allowed just one sack in 231 attempts this season. Blackshirts & Bad 'Dogs Fresno State has a unique way of honoring strong defensive efforts during games. Every week after defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle reviews game film, he makes note of the Bulldogs players who thoroughly dominated their position during the game. These players then receive plain black shirts to wear during practice the following week. Players not receiving blackshirts wear their normal practice uniform. On rare occasions, the coaching staff will give a "Bad 'Dog" award, going to any player who gave an extraordinary effort. Only six "Bad 'Dog" awards have been given in four years, and three coming this season. Game Blackshirt Players at Ohio State... Pittsburg (Kan.) State, 73 Despite being in only his third year at the helm of TCU, Dennis Franchione has lifted TCU to heights not achieved since the days when Dutch Meyer patrolled the sidelines in the 1930 s and 40 s. With last year s 28-14 over East Carolina in the Mobile Alabama Bowl, the Horned Frogs posted bowl victories in consecutive years for the first time in program history. This year, they climbed to as high as No. 9 in the nation before they fell last week at San Jose State. However, Franchione s reclamation project at TCU is nothing new to him. Prior to TCU, he was head coach at New Mexico, where in 1997, he helped lead the Lobos to their first bowl game since 1961. Other milestones at UNM were guiding the program to its first Top 25 ranking in 15 years and its first winning season in 11 years. Before taking over at New Mexico, Franchione was head coach at Southwest Texas State, which he guided to back-to-back winning seasons, impressive considering SWTS was coming off five consecutive seasons with sub-.500 records. Other head coaching stops came at Pittsburg (Kan.) State and Southwestern (Kan.) College. He did not experience a losing record in any of his seven seasons at the two schools. In fact, with TCU guaranteed of a winning record this season, Franchione has only experienced three losing seasons in 18 years as a college head coach.
