scranton/wilkes-barre railriders game notes scranton/wilkes-barre railriders (1-2) @ buffalo bisons (2-1) RHP David Hale (No Record) vs. RHP Clay Buchholz (No Record) Game No. 4 Sahlen Field Buffalo, NY April 7, 2019 First Pitch 1:05 p.m. last time out... BUFFALO, NY (April 6, 2019) It was a large lead for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders entering the bottom of the fourth inning, but a ferocious comeback put Buffalo ahead in the blink of an eye, and they didn t look back after jumping ahead 10-8 in the fifth winning by that very same margin. Offensively, the RailRiders put pressure on the Bisons early with a run in the top of the first inning. Outfielder Trey Amburgery doubled down the leftfield line on the very first pitch of the game against the Toronto Blue Jays No. 8 prospect, Sean Reid-Foley. A wild pitch from Reid-Foley put Amburgey at third base for Mandy Alvarez, who stroked a fly ball to left field for a 1-0 lead. Amburgey paced the offense with a 4-for-5 performance and is now batting.571 over the first three games of his Triple-A career (8-for-14). The Bisons responded with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning, and that 2-1 lead held until the top of the third inning when Mike Ford responded with a two-run homer of his own. At that point SWB led 3-2, but an unearned run in the bottom of the third off RailRiders starting pitcher Chance Adams made it 3-3. Adams was making his first start of the season and lasted 3.0 IP and appeared in the fourth but didn t retire any of the first three men he faced to reach before being lifted for Raynel Espinal. In the fourth inning, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre scored five times to take the lead, but Buffalo responded with four runs of their own to make it an 8-7 game. One inning later, Buffalo scored three more times to take the 10-8 lead which was the final score thanks to strong bullpen work by Buffalo. The reliever trio of Jordan Romano, Derek Law and Danny Barnes combined to throw the final 6.0 innings and allow just one hit while not allowing a run to secure the win. Before the fifth inning had come to a close, SWB had handed out seven free passes en route to a nine-walk performance. All four pitchers walked a man Saturday (Chance Adams, 4 BB; Raynel Espinal, 3 BB; Rex Brothers, BB; J.P. Feyereisen, BB) as the RailRiders walked more batters than they had in any game since at least the 2016 season. They fell well short of the franchise record for walks in a game however, which was set May 11, 1991 in which they walked 16 men. OVER HILL, OVER DALE FOR HALE: The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders have RHP David Hale set to start Game No. 4 of the 2019 season Sunday afternoon. He is looking to get SWB back to.500 with a win, and earn a split of the four-game series with the Bisons. The righty returns to the Yankees organization and the RailRiders after a 2018 season that saw him play all over the map (and globe). Hale pitched for four teams a year ago, across three franchises and two continents. He logged the most innings in South Korea, where he finished his 2018 with 66.1 IP for the Hanwha Eagles of the KBO. That was only after pitching for the New York Yankees (10.2 IP), Minnesota Twins (3.0 IP) and RailRiders (55.2 IP). GENIE IN A BOTTLE: The Toronto Blue Jays are hopeful that they channel the best version of veteran RHP Clay Buchholz, who is making an MLB Rehab start today at Sahlen Field against the RailRiders. A big-leaguer since 2007 at the age of 22, Buchholz is now 34 and coming off a second straight season that ended with an injury to his right elbow flexor. Every few years Buchholz puts up numbers that remind baseball fan of the young arm for the Boston Red Sox who was ranked as the No. 4 prospect in all of baseball by Baseball America before the 2008 season, one year after throwing a no-hitter in his second MLB start at the end of the 2007 season. If you take Buchholz four stellar seasons (2007, 2010, 2013, 2018), the numbers are off the charts: 39-11 in 54G/53GS with a 2.05 ERA and.215 BAA. In his other 8 seasons in the majors, the numbers are not nearly to that level: 49-53 in 170G/153GS with a 4.69 ERA and.265 BAA. PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE: When the initial player list was announced by the Yankees at the tail end of last week, it included 17 players who played for the RailRiders 2018 playoff-bound team, 13 players with Major League service time and two top-30 prospects. In the time since, SWB has lost INF/OF Tyler Wade and OF Clint Frazier to the big leagues, with the injuries to OF Giancarlo Stanton and INF Miguel Andujar up in New York. THE FUTURE IS SOON: The Toronto Blue Jays have a number of top prospects ready to make an impact in the big leagues, led by the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball, Vladimir Guererro Jr. The third-baseman injured his oblique during spring training and is currently on a Minor League rehab assignment with the High-A Dunedin Blue Jays, but is expected to join Buffalo shortly when he is healthy. Other top-30 prospects in the Blue Jays system according to Baseball America that populate the Buffalo Bisons roster include INF Bo Bichette (No. 2), RHP Sean Reid-Foley (No. 8), INF Cavan Biggio (No. 9), OF Anthony Alford (No. 11), RHP David Paulino (No. 23) and C Reese McGuire (No. 28).
