Portland led by 13 points with just over six minutes left in the third quarter and had an 81-78 lead with 6:37 to go. But the Jazz made a 3-pointer 35 seconds later to tie the game and made a lay-up with 5:35 left to take the lead for good. Zach Randolph paced the Blazers with 22 points, hitting 10-of-11 free throw attempts and nine rebounds. The win gave the Trail Blazers a 22-12 record in home openers and gave Portland a 4-0 record when opening the season at home against

Cleveland. The Blazers are just 4-5 in home openers in the Rose Garden, but have won three straight and 4-of-5. The score was tied 23-all after one quarter, but the Blazers got things going in the second period to take a 54-39 halftime lead. During the second quarter, the Cavs were held to 33.3% (6-of-18) shooting from the field and committed 11 fouls leading to 17 (13 made) Portland free throws. Zach Randolph recorded his first double-double of the season with 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Randolph hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor and went 5-of-5 from the line. Jeff McInnis scored 15 points in a reserve role while Damon Stoudamire chipped in 14 points. In his first action of the season, Qyntel Woods scored 13 points in 16 minutes. This is the third straight season the Blazers have started the season by losing two-of-three games. The loss gave Portland a 1-1 home record for the season. The Blazers owned a one-point advantage at the end of the first period, but were outscored in the second quarter, 25-15, to fall behind by nine points at the half. The two teams played even in the third period (19-19) with the Sixers outscoring the Blazers by two in the fourth quarter, 25-23, for the final margin. The Blazers raced out to a 28-16 advantage after one period and led by 18 points, 50-32, at the half. Zach Randolph scored 20 points and grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds (both game-highs) for his third straight double-double. Bonzi Wells (17 points), Damon Stoudamire (13) and Jeff McInnis (10) were the other Blazers in double figures. Rasheed Wallace pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds while Dale Davis grabbed nine boards. Randolph and Stoudamire each dished out four assists for the Blazers. Portland held the Grizzlies to 40.7% shooting from the field (33-of-81) while knocking down 46.2% (36-of-78) of their own shots. The loss gave Portland a 2-3 record for the season. The defeat snapped Portland s four-game winning streak vs. the Sonics. The Blazers now trail the alltime series against Seattle, 87-86. The Blazers held a 48-41 lead with 1:48 remaining in the second quarter before the Sonics went on a 9-0 run to close out the first half. Seattle pushed their advantage to 16 points in the third period and 22 in the final quarter. Rasheed Wallace had his first double-double of the season, scoring 25 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. The 6-foot-11 forward also had four assists and two blocked shots, both team highs. Zach Randolph, the Blazers leading scorer and rebounder, missing his fourth straight double-double by one rebound as he scored 19 points and pulled down nine boards. The only other Blazer in double figures was Bonzi Wells who

Zach Randolph led the Blazers with a season-high 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds. For the second consecutive game, Randolph missed a double-double by one rebound. Jeff McInnis hit 8-of-14 shots to score 21 points and dished out a game-high nine assists. Dale Davis scored 10 points in the opening period and finished the game with 12 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. Portland has a 5-1 record in the Rose Garden this season and has won four straight at home. The Blazers fell behind by 16 at the end of the first quarter and by 18 points at the half, 63-45. Cheeks heads into his third campaign as the head man in Portland with a 99-65 record (60.4%) and is coming off a promising playoff performance last spring by the Blazers. His club took Dallas, a team that tied eventual champion San Antonio for the best regular season record, to seven games in Western Conference's first round.

Cheeks was named Portland's 10th head coach on June 27, 2001, after serving seven seasons as an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers. He entered the NBA coaching ranks after a long and distinguished career as player in the league. The first 11 years of his 15 as a player in the league was with Philadelphia, before going on to stints with San Antonio, New York, Atlanta and New Jersey. He retired in 1993 as the league's all-time steals leader and was fifth on the career assists list. Maurice led the 76ers in assists in all 11 seasons he played in Philadelphia and also topped the team in steals in each of his first 10 years. He shares the NBA Finals single-game record for most steals in a game with six, and he shares the single-game playoff record for most steals with eight. He was selected to the NBA's All-Defensive Team four times and played in four All-Star games. He was a member of the 76ers 1983 World Championship team. As an NBA player, Cheeks compiled career averages of 11.1 points, 6.7 assists and 2.1 steals in 1,101 games over 15 seasons while shooting 52.3% from the field and.79.3% from the free throw line. The 1978 West Texas State graduate was a four-year starter and three-time team MVP in college. He finished his collegiate career third on the Buffalo's all-time scoring list, averaging 16.8 points per game and shooting 56.8% from the field as a senior. Cheeks was selected in the second round of the 1978 NBA Draft (36th overall) by the Sixers. The Chicago native began his coaching career as an assistant to present Blazers assistant coach Dan Panaggio at the Quad City Thunder of the CBA. In his only season with Quad City, Cheeks helped guide the club to the CBA championship. A favorite in Philadelphia, Cheeks is one of six former Sixers players to have his number retired by the club (number 10). Jimmy Lynam, Assistant Coach Jimmy Lynam enters the third season of his second tour of duty with the Trail Blazers. Lynam began his coaching career in 1981 as a Blazers assistant coach to then-head coach, Jack Ramsay. Prior to coming to the Blazers, Lynam was an assistant coach with the New Jersey Nets. In addition to being an NBA assistant coach, Lynam has held three NBA head coaching positions; Washington, Philadelphia and the L.A. Clippers. The Clippers gave Lynam his first NBA head coaching job in 1983. In a season and a half, Lynam led the Clippers to a 52-91 record. He joined the Philadelphia 76ers, leading them to the Atlantic Division title in the 1989-90 season with a record of 53-29 and finished second in the voting for NBA Coach of the Year. Following his four-year stint as head coach, Lynam stepped into Philadelphia s front office as the 76ers General Manager. In 1994, the Washington Bullets (now Wizards) chose Lynam as their head coach, a position he held for two seasons and posted a record of 82-128. Lynam made the jump to the NBA after several successful head coaching stints as the collegiate level. He amassed an impressive 158-118 mark in 10 seasons at Fairfield University, American University and St. Joseph s University. Lynam s.699 winning percentage at his alma mater, St. Joseph s, ranks second in school history behind Jack Ramsay. Lynam played two seasons in the St. Joseph s backcourt, where he grabbed MVP honors both years and scored 1,012 points for coach Jack Ramsay. Jim and his wife, Kay, have three grown children; Kathy, Denise and Jim Jr. Dan Panaggio, Assistant Coach Dan Panaggio enters his third season on the Trail Blazers coaching staff. A native of Rochester, New York, Panaggio served as an assistant to Mike Davis at Indiana University during the 2000-2001 season. Prior to that he was head coach of the CBA s Quad City Thunder for nine seasons. He owned a career record of 313-191 with the Thunder and won CBA titles in 1994 and 1998. All nine of his Quad City teams advanced to the CBA playoffs. In 1999, Panaggio led Quad City to the National Conference crown and the league s best regular season record, en route to earning his third CBA Coach of the Year award. Entering the 2000 season, he had more career victories that any other active coach and left the CBA ranking second on the all-time wins list behind his father, Mauro, who coached Quad City prior to Dan. Panaggio ranks third all-time in games coached (504), third in playoff victories (71) and fifth in regular season winning percentage. Panaggio spent three seasons as an assistant coach with Quad City before take over the heading coach duties from his father. Prior to that he was the head coach at Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY, where he posted a 70-15 record. Blazers head coach, Maurice Cheeks, was Panaggio s aide with Quad City during the 1993-94 season. Panaggio, 46, is a graduate of SUNY-Brockport and he and his wife, Ellen, are the parents of five children.

John Loyer, Assistant Coach John Loyer, who begins his first season as an assistant coach, has spent the past three seasons as a member of the Trail Blazers basketball operations staff. Loyer spent the last two seasons as an advance scout and prior to that was the Blazers video coordinator in his first year with the team. A 12-year coaching veteran at the collegiate level, including Wabash Valley College, University of Akron and University of Cincinnati, Loyer participated in one NCAA Final Four and two Elite Eight teams. He has a 234-86 record as a college assistant. Bernard Smith, Assistant Coach Bernard Smith heads to the bench as an assistant coach after have been the Blazers video coordinator for the past two seasons. As the video coordinator, he was responsible for video analysis, breakdown of NBA opponents and game film editing. In addition, Smith has assisted during the Blazers summer league squads for the past two seasons. Prior to his time with the Blazers, he worked in front office of the Philadelphia 76ers for six seasons. Smith is a 1990 graduate of East Stroudsburg State (PA).
