MATCH REPORTS U16 Girls The girls are really starting to gel well together and this was demonstrated by a strong 4-0 win over Uni Tigers. Throughout the entire game the girls looked threatening, managing a number of field goal opportunities and penalty corners. We had majority of the possession and there were only a handful of times that Uni managed to get into their attacking 25. Considering the number of strong players that Uni did have, this is a real credit to the team s guts and determination. We liked well through the midfield into the strike line. We are lucky enough to have a lot of speed up front and this allowed us to eliminate the Tigers defence creating goal scoring opportunities. We were smart about or decision making in attack passing the ball to the hot spots and putting into action what we had been practicing at training. Our work rate in defence was solid with all players making an effort to get back but our distribution once we regain possession is an area for improvement that will be worked on in the coming weeks. All in all, a very solid effort and there are many positives to draw on as we head into round 2. C Grade Women 3-1win against NUTS Welcome to Emma F for her first game with us this year. How good does it feel to win against Uni? A much improved effort this week. We did still start the game getting caught behind our defenders when the ball was moved forward, something we rectified quickly to our advantage and a credit to the players on field adaptability. From this point on we controlled the game as our ever reliable defence blocked Uni s attack and our midfield shut down their opposite inners. As the game continued, we forced a number of penalty corners and Emma C crashed one past the keeper and into the backboard. Although this felt good there was better to come. Another penalty corner and another goal, but not just any goal, a right post deflection from Dee. A goal like this not only feels good for the scorer but good for the team and the coach. Two nil up at half time. In the second half, Nat and Sue kept the pressure on up front. The inners, Dee, Jenny, Bri and Carolyn showed great skills to continually move the ball through the midfield onto the strikers. Monika and Meredith are working hard at training and are improving every week holding down both flank half positions. Emma C was great, intercepting balls, making tackles and hitting flat, hard balls to the forwards. We scored another goal from a penalty corner. This time it was a left inner lay off to Dee, a good reward for the team and the corner battery and the practice they put in. Thanks to Micky for stepping in to kicking fullback at the last minute. BOG Cup was shared by Emma C and Dee. Let s keep working hard at training and keep improving every week. LEIGH U13 Boys 3-2 Win against Tigers With only 10 Players (more on this later) our Saints took on the Tigers. Tigers really looked like a formidable team with a full bench of subs and 3 coaches. Fast Forward to the end of the first half and our boys had put away three goals. The passing and leading was excellent as was the general work rate of the team. The only time Tigers looked dangerous was when we gave them the ball on the odd cheap turn over i.e. bad hits/passes. In the second half Tigers came out hard trying to make up some lost ground. The Saints boys held their own though and hung on for the win. It was a great effort with one player short. On that note - For an 11 person team we only have 9 x U13 boys registered to play. Sometimes we have some U10 boys step up to help but not always. In the interest of letting our boys have a fair go at playing hockey(and for the future of the senior men s teams) I am asking all parents if their sons know some boys in the 10-13 year old age bracket that might be interested in playing hockey for us. If so bring them down to training. It doesn t matter of they have never picked up a hockey stick before. Our boys generally work really hard on game day but they can only do so much when they are a player or two short. HELP US GET MORE PLAYERS!! Cheers, Peasey.
