BOSTON RED SOX (20-20) vs. DETROIT TIGERS (24-12) Friday, May 16, 2014 7:10 p.m. ET Fenway Park, Boston, MA LHP Jon Lester (4-4, 2.75) vs. RHP Max Scherzer (5-1, 2.04) Game #41 Home Game #22 TV: NESN/MLBN Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCEC 1490 AM (Spanish) STATE OF THE SOX: The Red Sox fell to the Twins 4-3 last night in Minnesota to drop the 3-game set, 2-1...Both of the Sox losses in the series came on walk-off hits off Andrew Miller (Parmelee HR in 9th inning on Tuesday night, Hicks single in 10th inning yesterday)...yesterday the Red Sox scored twice with 2 out in the 9th to send it to extras. Boston outscored the Twins 18-16 in the series, with their 2 losses by a combined 3 runs...it snapped a stretch of 4 straight series victories for the Sox. At 20-20, the Red Sox are just 3 wins shy of their 2013 pace through 40 games (23-17). WHERE WE STAND: At 20-20, Boston is tied with TOR (21-21) for 3rd place in the AL East, 1.5 games behind the 1st-place Orioles (21-18). Boston s 20 wins are tied for 2nd in the division behind BAL (21-18), NYY (21-19), and TOR (21-21). THE LAST MONTH: The Red Sox have gone 15-11 (.577) over the last month from 4/16-5/15...That is tied for the AL s 3rd-best record since the start of the 2nd half of April, behind only the Tigers (.692, 18-8) and Angels (.615, 16-10)... That stretch followed a 5-9 (.357) start to April. The Red Sox have the 3rd-best record in baseball at 7-4 (.636) beginning on 5/2, the day after they were swept by the Rays in a doubleheader at Fenway Park... In MLB, only Detroit (.769, 10-3) and San Francisco (.714, 10-4) have fared better in that time. The club has also taken 10 of its last 17 starting on 4/25, and 13 of its last 23 starting on 4/19. SCORING UP: Boston has scored more runs in the club s last 5 games (31 total runs) than in any other 5-game stretch this season. The Red Sox scored a season-high 9 runs Wednesday night. PAPI ON POINT: David Ortiz is batting.552 (16-for-29) with 3 2B, 5 HR, 8 RBI, 4 BB during a season-long 8-game hit streak...he went 8-for-14 (.571) with a double, 4 homers, and 6 RBI during Boston s 3-game series in Minnesota. Ortiz ranks 3rd in the AL with 11 home runs, his 2ndmost homers through his team s first 40 games of a season...in 2006 he hit 14 homers through 40 games en route to a club-record 54 HR that year. GOING DEEP TWICE, TWICE: David Ortiz went deep twice in each of the fi rst 2 games of the Twins series, matching the longest multi-homer streak in Red Sox history for the 12th time, 1st since Ortiz did it from 7/4-5/03 at NYY (the only other time he has accomplished the feat in his career). The 2, 2-homer games tied his single-game career high for the 42nd and 43rd time...they were his 40th and 41st as a Red Sox, extending a club record and 2nd in MLB since the start of 2003 (Albert Pujols, 45). In those first 2 games of the series, Ortiz also became the 1st Red Sox with at least 3 hits and 2 home runs in consecutive games of a single series. TED, YAZ, PAPI: On Wedneday night at MIN, David Ortiz passed Jim Rice (382) for sole possesion of 3rd place on the Red Sox all-time list...he now stands at 384 homers, behind only Ted Williams (521) and Carl Yastrzemski (452). Ortiz s 2nd homer on Wedneday night was the 442nd of his ML career, tying Dave Kingman for 39th place on MLB s all-time list. LESTER/SCHERZER: Tonight s starting pitchers, Jon Lester and Max Scherzer, both enter the game with 66 strikeouts in 8 starts this season...they tied with 2 others for 2nd in the AL in strikeouts, 4 shy of David Price (70). These 2 pitchers have faced off just once before, on 9/3/13 in a 2-1 Red Sox win at Fenway Park...Lester earned the win (7.0 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 SO) and Scherzer (7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 8 SO) took the loss. TIGERS TALK: Tonight the Red Sox and Tigers open their 6-game season series with the 1st of a 3-game set at Fenway Park...They will round out the regular season set with 3 games in Detroit from 6/6-8. This series is a rematch of the 2013 ALCS, a 6-game Red Sox win en route to the World Series title...boston outscored Detroit 19-18 and were outhit 50-39 in the 6 contests. Boston owns the AL s best record against the Tigers since 2008 at 27-16 (.628)...The Sox are 19-7 (.731) in home games against Detroit since the start of 2007, winning their season series in Boston all 7 years. SCORING STORY: The Red Sox are 10-7 in 17 games since the team s anticipated Opening Day lineup has been active (Will Middlebrooks returned from DL on 4/25). They have scored 6 runs or more in 9 of those 17 games, 3 more than their first 23 games (6). Starting on 4/25, Boston s offense leads MLB in walks (79) and OBP (.352)...All 5 times Boston has batted around in an inning, as well as all of the team s 3 grand slams (T-1st in MLB), have come in the team s last 16 games starting 4/26. Dustin Pedroia has a.286 AVG/.382 OBP/.442 SLG line in 18 games since returning to the leadoff spot, 4/24. ON-BASE EXPERTS: Boston s offense ranks 3rd in the AL with a.336 OBP, 166 walks drawn (3rd in MLB), and 524 times reaching base safely. The Red Sox are averaging 4.07 pitches/pa, 2nd most in MLB to the Twins (4.14). RISP RETURNING: The Red Sox have hit.459 (17-for-37) with runners in scoring position over the last 5 games, batting no worse than.333 with RISP in any of those 5 games. That 5-game stretch as raised the club s season AVG with RISP from.221 to.246, 9th in the AL. The Red Sox are tied for the AL lead with 142, 2-strike hits, along with the Yankees. SMOOTH ROTATION: The Red Sox are the only AL team that has used no more than 5 starting pitchers this season... In the NL, only the Brewers and Padres have done it. Before this year, Boston had not gone long using only 5 starters since 2007 (6th starter used in 42nd game). QUANTITIES OF QUALITY: Boston has received quality starts in 27 of 40 games this year, 2nd in the AL and 1 shy of OAK s 28 (in 41 games). This is the 1st time Boston has posted 27 QS through 40 games since the 1952 team had 29...In the last 96 seasons (1919-2014), these are the only 2 years the Sox have reached 27 QS this quickly. AT FENWAY: The Red Sox return to Fenway Park tonight, opening a 7-day, 6-game homestand against the Tigers over the weekend, and Blue Jays after Monday s off-day... The Sox went 3-3 in the 8-day road trip through Texas (2-1) and Minnesota (1-2) that ended yesterday. Following the current 6-game homestand, the Sox will play 24 of their next 36 games on the road, 5/23-6/29. Boston enters tonight s game having played 21 home games, 1 shy of AL leading Astros and Athletics (22 each). FAST-ACTING RELIEF: The Red Sox bullpen has allowed just 16.9% of inherited runners to score (11 of 65), the 2ndlowest percentage in MLB behind BAL (16.2%, 12 of 74). The Sox have an AL-best 5 losses after taking a lead, T-2nd fewest in MLB behind ATL s 4. SLIMMEST OF MARGINS: Boston s 40 games include an AL-leading contests 14 decided by 1 run (5-9)...The Sox 9 losses in 1 run games are tied with KC and LAA for the most such losses in the AL.
