The Phoenix can even its Horizon League record at 2-2 with a victory over the Raiders. A tough shooting night and a huge discrepancy at the free throw line doomed the Phoenix in a 79-56 loss at Detroit Thursday night. Green Bay trailed by just seven at the break but shot just 34.5 percent in the second half as the Titans pulled away. Junior Jarvis Williams scored a career-high 15 points in his Horizon League debut while senior Rahmon Fletcher added 15 points. It was the seventh-straight game that the all-conference senior had scored at least 15 points. Fletcher is averaging a team-high 17.1 points per game, good for third in the league. Wright State was also involved in a 20-plus point game on Thursday, but the Raiders earned a 68-44 victory over Milwaukee in a game that saw WSU knock down 11-of-18 three-pointers. Cooper Land went 5-for-6 from three and finished a game-high 21 points to lead the Raiders. Green Bay and Wright State split a pair of meetings a season ago, with the Phoenix winning 68-66 at the Resch Center and Wright State posting a 67-54 win in Dayton. Fletcher averaged 16 points in the two contests last year. Green Bay will be trying to become the first team to knock off WSU at the Nutter Center this season. STIFLING D: Green Bay s defense has at times given up high shooting percentages in 2010-11, but the Phoenix locked down in its comeback at Wyoming. In rallying from a nine-point deficit, Green Bay did not allow a field goal over the final 11:46 and held the Cowboys to just 27.3 percent shooting. The Phoenix is 6-2 when holding opponents below 50 percent and 6-1 when allowing fewer than 70 points. SHOOTING TURNAROUND: After a dismal shooting performance in the first half at Wyoming, Green Bay had one of its strongest offensive halves of the season after halftime. The Phoenix hit just 3-of-16 three-pointers in the opening half before knocking down all seven of its shots from long range in the final 20 minutes. The team went 13-of-19 overall from the field in the second half for 68.4 percent, a season-high for a half this season. TOP-10 OF ALL-TIME: Fletcher moved into ninth place on the school s all-time scoring list with 21 points at Wyoming. He also went over 1,400 career points and now stands at 1,417 points after scoring 15 against Detroit. He will next look to pass Bryan Boettcher, who scored 1,440 career points from 1975-78. BENCH PRODUCTION: The Phoenix bench tied its season high for points at Wyoming, outscoring its counterparts 25-4. Junior Steve Baker had 13 points to lead Green Bay reserves while Seth Evans and Greg LeSage had eight and four points, respectively. In three of those wins, Green Bay has been down at halftime - Miami (down 5), North Dakota (down 10) and Wyoming (down 5). Green Bay trailed Youngstown St. by eight in the second half before ending the game on a 28-5 run, including a 19-1 spurt while taking the lead. SENIORS IN THE SECOND The main reasons for Green Bay s comeback wins have been seniors Rahmon Fletcher and Bryquis Perine. In the second halves of the team s wins, the pair has combined to average 21.5 points (Fletcher-11.5, Perine-9.0) and hit 42-of-70 shots from the field (60 percent), including 10- of-15 three-pointers. With Fletcher scoring 16 second-half points, the duo combined to score 22 points and hit all six of their three-point tries against Wyoming. BROWN S BLOCK PARTY Freshman Alec Brown s eight blocks against North Dakota (12/20) broke a school record for the Phoenix previously set by Nate Barnes against Northern Iowa on Dec. 11, 1982. It also tied the Resch Center record and helped the Phoenix break the team record for blocks in a game with 10. The 7-foot-1 Brown has 29 blocks and is tied with Terry Evans in 2005-06 for the most blocks in a season by a freshman. His average of 2.1 blocks per game ranks third in the Horizon League. He also had six blocks in his college debut against Minnesota Duluth. WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? Over the past four games, Brown is averaging 13.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. He added 19 points and seven rebounds to his eight blocks against North Dakota. Against Wisconsin on Dec. 13, Brown hit 8-of-11 shots from the field while scoring 18 points and grabbing eight rebounds. RISING RAHMON Fletcher is now in the top-10 all-time in Green Bay s storied history in points, assists, steals and field goals made and attempted. If he continues at his current average this season, Fletcher will score over 1,700 career points and finish in the top five on the program s scoring list. The senior is also on pace to finish in the top-10 in scoring average, three-point field goals made and attempted and games played. MIGHTY MOUSE Fletcher, nicknamed Mouse, has been a consistent scorer this season, tallying double figures and at least 15 points in 12 of 14 games, including seven in a row. In the 12 games in which he has reached double figures, Fletcher is averaging 18.6 points and shooting 50.6 percent (85-168) GREEN BAY ROSTER No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Wt. from the field. His distribution has improved significantly of late. In the past seven games, he has averaged 18.0 points and 4.1 assists. Against Youngstown State on Dec. 4, he had one of his better all-around games, adding six assists, five rebounds and four steals to his game-high 19 points. I LL TAKE THAT Fletcher currently has 174 steals in his Phoenix career. The senior is tied for third in the Horizon League in steals per game, averaging 1.8 per contest. He now sits in third place on the program steals list, just three shy of passing Frank Nardi for second place. His five steals against Miami (Nov. 21) tied his career high and tied for the ninthmost in school history. CHARITY STRIPE Fletcher is 38-for-48 (79.2 percent) from the foul line this season. Freshman Alec Brown hit his first 10 free throws against North Dakota and is now shooting 75.5 percent (37-48) this season. JUMPIN JARVIS Junior Jarvis Williams was activated prior to the game at Buffalo after missing the previous seven contests. The junior, who has started four-straight games, scored a career-high 15 points Thursday at Detroit in his first Horizon League game. Williams grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in the game against Wisconsin. OFFENSIVE GLASS CLEANERS Green Bay ranks first in the Horizon League in offensive rebounds per game (14.5). Freshman Daniel Turner, who had nine offensive rebounds against Duquesne, is sixth in the league at 2.3 per game. Green Bay is grabbing a league-leading 39.4 percent of the rebounds off its missed shots. START IT UP Brian Wardle has used four different starting lineups this season. Daniel Turner (nine games), Troy Snyder (three games) and Jarvis Williams (two games) have all started at the four spot. Turner started his first college game on Nov. 27 against NDSU and has started the last nine games for the Phoenix. After returning from injury, Williams has stared the past three games at small forward. PHOENIX NOTES HORIZON LEAGUE UPDATE Fletcher, Perine and Brown have each started all 14 games for the Phoenix. BAKER S DOZENS Junior Steve Baker scored 13 points and tied a career-high with seven rebounds off the bench against Wyoming. Baker was perfect against Youngstown State while scoring 13 points. He hit all five of his field goal attempts and went 3-of-3 from the line. The junior college transfer is averaging 8.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT Freshman Alec Brown, at 7-foot-1, is one of the tallest players in the country, while junior Eric Valentin, at 5-foot-4, is one of the shortest. The 21-inch size differential between the two players is the biggest of any teammates in the country. TIME TO PLAY: Freshman Kam Cerroni made his collegiate debut against Wisconsin, playing 19 minutes. He then played 17 minutes against North Dakota and scored his first collegiate points on a three-pointer in the opening half. The freshman from Sussex, Wis., sat out the team s first 10 games of the season while being slated to redshirt. AND YOUR NAME IS The Phoenix are integrating seven newcomers into the team this season. The newcomers include three junior college transfers (Jarvis Williams, Eric Valentin, Steve Baker), one Division I transfer (Terry Johnson) and three freshmen (Alec Brown, Kam Cerroni, Daniel Turner) WORTH THE WAIT Wardle s win over Minnesota Duluth made him the third coach in program history to win his debut. Brian Wardle became the sixth head coach in Green Bay history on April 15, 2010 He spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach with the Phoenix under Tod Kowalczyk. 2010-11 HL Standings Team HL Pct.
