Horizon League Game GREEN BAY HOSTS VALPO IN HOME FINALE OF FLETCHER, PERINE Seniors Rahmon Fletcher and Bryquis Perine have a 44-13 record in 57 career home games and on Monday against Valparaiso, the pair will look for one more win in the last guaranteed home game of accomplished careers. They will also be looking to help their Phoenix team end its current five-game slide. On Saturday, Fletcher scored a game-high 22 points for the Phoenix, but a Southern Illinois layup with one second remaining left his Green Bay team on the wrong side of a 61-60 decision. It was the third time in five games and the fifth time this season that a Green Bay opponent has scored a game-winning basket with under five seconds to play. Fletcher s career has been one of the most accomplished in school history, and he has done much of his damage at the Resch Center. The 5-foot-10 guard has averaged 14.3 points in his career at home, including an 18.5 points per game average on his home floor over the past two seasons. Fletcher has 1,633 career points, and this season has become the program s all-time leader in games started. Perine has also had his moments at the Resch Center, helping Green Bay to upset victories and hitting a game-winning shot this season against North Dakota State. Valpo enters Monday s contest in the middle of a closely contested race for the Horizon League Championship. With one week to play, the Crusaders are just a half-game behind league-leading Cleveland State in the conference standings. GREEN BAY PROBABLE STARTERS No. Name Pos. Ht. Yr. After a win at Valpo earlier this season, Green Bay has won four out of the past five games against the Crusaders. However, Valpo claimed an 84-79 win in the last meeting at the Resch Center, on Jan. 31, 2010. THE LAST MEETING: Led by 15 points and six rebounds from freshman Alec Brown, Green Bay rallied from a 10-point second half deficit on Jan. 23 and downed the Crusaders 63-61, handing Valpo its lone home Horizon League loss. Junior Jarvis Williams added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Phoenix. CRUSADERS PLAYER TO WATCH: Junior Brandon Wood is averaging 16 points per game for the Crusaders and is among the best guards in the Horizon League. Wood led the Horizon League in scoring a season ago and scored 26 points in the teams last meeting at the Resch Center. SENIOR SALUTE: Monday s game will mark the final regular season home game for seniors Rahmon Fletcher, Greg LeSage and Bryquis Perine. Fletcher and Perine have been with the Green Bay program since the 2007-08 season, going 44-13 in 57 career home games and will be playing in their 125th and 124th overall career games, respectively. Fletcher has averaged an impressive 14.3 points per game, including 18.5 as a junior and senior. AMONG THE BEST: Fletcher is winding down one of the best individual careers in Green Bay history, and the guard is still working his way up the all-time scoring ledger. With 22 points at Southern Illinois, Fletcher moved past Richard Sims for sixth place on the program s all-time scoring list and now has 1,633 career points. The Kansas City native is also in the top-10 alltime in assists, steals, field goals made, three-point field goals made, games played and games started. RECORD BREAKER: Brown blocked two shots at Southern Illinois, extending his single-season blocks record to 60. He is averaging 2.1 per game, and the freshman broke the single-season record previously shared by Larry Hill (1991-92) and Terry Evans (2006-07). Brown, who ranks third in the Horizon League in blocks per game, also holds the school records for block in a game, blocks in a game at the Resch Center and blocks in a season by a freshman. TOUGH STRETCH: Green Bay s home finale is one of just two home contests for the team in a nine-game month of February. MIGHTY MOUSE Fletcher, nicknamed Mouse, has been a consistent scorer this season, tallying double figures in 24 of 28 games, including at least 15 points 18 times. He has 80 career double-figure games and 19 games with at least 20 points. Williams missed seven games early in the season with an ankle injury. OFFENSIVE GLASS CLEANERS Green Bay is first in the Horizon League in offensive rebounds per game (13.0). Freshman Daniel Turner, who had nine offensive rebounds against Duquesne, is tied for seventh in the league at 2.4 per game. Green Bay is grabbing 36.7 percent of the rebounds off its missed shots, second in the Horizon League lead. I LL TAKE THAT Fletcher currently has 192 steals in his Phoenix career, ranking second in Green Bay history behind only Terry Evans 237. The senior is tied for fifth in the Horizon League in steals per game, averaging 1.6 per contest. His five steals against Miami (Nov. 21) tied his career high and tied for the ninthmost in school history. WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? Over the past 16 games, Alec Brown is averaging 10.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.5 blocks while shooting 54.8 percent (68-124). The first of those 16 games was at Wisconsin on Dec. 13, a game in which Brown scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. BROWN S BLOCK PARTY Brown broke the school record for blocks in a season against Wright State and now has 58 in his freshman campaign. He broke the record of 47 previously shared by Larry Hill (1991-92) and Terry Evans (2006-07). Brown also broke Evans record for blocks by a freshman (29 in 2005-06). The 7-foot-1 Brown s eight blocks against North Dakota (12/20) broke a school record for the Phoenix previously set by Nate Barnes against Northern Iowa on Dec. 11, 1982. It also tied the Resch Center record and helped the Phoenix break the team record for blocks in a game with 10. His average of 2.1 blocks per game ranks third in the Horizon League. He also had six blocks in his college debut against Minnesota Duluth. OFFENSIVE OUTPUT The win over Detroit on Jan. 30 was one of Green Bay s best offensive games of the season. The team had season highs of 85 points, 20 assists and 11 three-pointers made. Green Bay also had just five turnovers, a season low for the team. PHOENIX NOTES HORIZON LEAGUE UPDATE CONFERENCE CALL Southern Illinois was the first team from the Missouri Valley that Green Bay played this season. The Phoenix has played non-conference games against teams from eight different conferences in 2010-11 (BIG EAST, Big Ten, MAC, Valley, Summit, Great West, Mountain West and Missouri Valley). COMEBACK KIDS Including Jan. 30 against Detroit, seven of Green Bay s 12 wins this season have come in games where they have trailed in the second half. In four of those wins, Green Bay has been down at halftime - Miami (down 5), North Dakota (down 10), Wyoming (down 5) and Valparaiso (down by 10). Green Bay trailed Valpo 28-18 early in the second half on Jan. 23 before outscoring the Crusaders 45-33 the rest of the way. SENIORS IN THE SECOND The main reasons for Green Bay s comeback wins have been Fletcher and Perine. In the second halves of the team s wins, the pair has combined to average 17.3 points (Fletcher-10.7, Perine-6.6) and hit 69-of-135 shots from the field (51.1 percent), including 18-of-38 three-pointers. Fletcher scored 10 of his 13 in the second half to help Green Bay defeat Milwaukee and 14 of his 21 in the second against Loyola. GANG REBOUNDING Despite being amoung the league s top rebounding teams, Green Bay does not have a player in the league s top-10 in rebounds. The Phoenix rebounds with a team effort, and four players are averaging between 4.4 and 5.5 boards per game. THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT Brown, at 7-foot-1, is one of the tallest players in the country, while junior Eric Valentin, at 5-foot-4, is one of the shortest. The 21-inch size differential between the two players is the biggest of any teammates in the country. START IT UP Brian Wardle has used six different starting lineups this season.
