Horizon League Game ON THE ROAD AGAIN, GREEN BAY FACES TOUGH TEST AT HINKLE The Green Bay men s basketball team took care of its business on its four-game homestand, sweeping the contests while improving its overall and Horizon League record to above.500. Back on the road again Friday, the competition stiffens for the Phoenix against the defending national runner-up Butler. During Green Bay s four-game streak, which concluded last weekend with Horizon League wins over Loyola (71-68) and UIC (74-50), the Phoenix held its opponents to just 37.4 percent shooting from the field and held a plus-6.3 rebounding margin. Green Bay has held five-straight foes below 40 percent and held a rebound edge in each of its HL games. Senior guard Rahmon Fletcher, who scored at least 20 against both Loyola and UIC, is averaging 17 points per game during the streak. Fellow senior Bryquis Perine has lifted his game as well of late, averaging 16.7 points during the past three wins. Butler enters after a 69-64 loss at Wright State on Sunday, but the Bulldogs have won 14-straight games against Horizon League teams on their home floor. Under head coach Brad Stevens, the team is 51-4 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. It is an important weekend for both squads, with Butler sitting one game behind league-leading Valparaiso and Green Bay just one game out of a tie for second place after winning three-straight league games. The Bulldogs won both contests a season ago, with the last Phoenix win was 75-66 in Green Bay on Feb. 2, 2009. In five career games against Butler, senior Rahmon Fletcher has averaged 17.8 points per game. TOP-10 OF ALL-TIME: Fletcher s back-to-back 20-point games have given him 1,494 career points. Fletcher, who is on pace to finish his career in fifth place all-time, will pass Tom Anderson (1975-78) for seventh place with nine points on Friday. The senior is also just six points away from becoming the fourth active Horizon League player with 1,500 career points, joining Butler s Matt Howard, Cleveland State s Norris Cole and Wright State s Vaughn Duggins. DEFENSE, DEFENSE: The Phoenix defense has really turned it up a notch over the past five games. Green Bay has held Wright State, Houston Baptist, Milwaukee, Loyola and UIC below 40 percent shooting from the field and below 70 points. Green Bay is now 10-2 when opponents score under 70 points, 8-1 when shooting a higher percentage than its opponent and 10-3 when its opponent shoots below 50 percent. SOUTHPAWS STREAKING: Seniors Rahmon Fletcher and Bryquis Perine have both been effective of late for the Phoenix. The team s two leading scorers have combined to average 30.8 points (Fletcher-17.0, Perine-13.8) per game during the team s four-game winning streak. The duo scored 31 points in the first half alone in the rout of UIC on Saturday. FRONTLINE FORCE: Green Bay s frontline of starters Jarvis Williams, Daniel Turner and Alec Brown and reserve center Greg LeSage have stepped up with three-straight big performances. The quartet of post players combined for 29 points, 26 rebounds and five blocks against Milwaukee, 30 points, 23 rebounds and six blocks in the win against Loyola and 24 points, 23 rebounds and one block against UIC. BOARDWORK: Green Bay has outrebounded seven-straight opponents and all seven of its foes in Horizon League play this season. The Phoenix has a league-leading plus-5.7 rebounding margin in conference games this season, and its plus-3.8 rebounding margin overall also leads the conference. The team s rebounding has been a complete team effort, with seven different players either tying for the team lead or leading the team in rebounding in at least one conference game. The two games were the first time Fletcher had 20 in back-to-back games since the last time Green Bay hosted Loyola and UIC. He scored 29 and 24 against Loyola and UIC respectively on Dec. 3 and 5, 2009. LONG RANGE REVERSAL After struggling from long range early in the season and giving up a high three-point percentage, Green Bay has reversed the trend in recent games. The Phoenix is shooting 43.5 percent from three (20-46) in its last three games while allowing just 27.8 percent (15-54). UIC missed all 12 of its three-point attempts last Saturday, becoming the first Green Bay opponent since Butler on Feb. 20, 1999 to fail to make a three-pointer. HOME SWEET HOME Green Bay improved to 8-2 at home with the sweep of its recent four-game homestand. Since 2007-08, the Phoenix is 42-11 at the Resch since 2007-08, a 79.2 winning percentage. Senior Rahmon Fletcher is averaging 17.4 points per game at home, where Green Bay has a plus-5.9 rebounding margin. GANG REBOUNDING Despite being the league s top rebounding team, Green Bay has only one player in the league s top-10 in rebounds per game. The Phoenix rebounds with a team effort, and four players are averaging between 4.5 and 5.8 boards per game. Seven different players have led the team in rebounding at least once in a Horizon League game. OFFENSIVE GLASS CLEANERS Green Bay ranks first in the Horizon League in offensive rebounds per game (14.3). Freshman Daniel Turner, who had nine offensive rebounds against Duquesne, is tied for fifth in the league at 2.5 per game. Green Bay is grabbing a league-leading 39.6 percent of the rebounds off its missed shots. SENIORS IN THE SECOND The main reasons for Green Bay s comeback wins have been seniors Rahmon Fletcher and Bryquis Perine. In the second halves of the team s wins, the pair has combined to average 18.1 points (Fletcher-11.0, Perine-7.1) and hit 60-of-116 shots from the field (51.7 percent), including 15-of-30 three-pointers. Fletcher scored 10 of his 13 in the second half to help Green Bay defeat Milwaukee and 14 of his 21 in the second against Loyola. The duo reversed the trend against UIC, scoring 31 of their 36 in the opening half. BROWN S BLOCK PARTY Freshman Alec Brown has 40 blocks, the most by a freshman in Green Bay history, breaking Terry Evans record of 29 (2005-06). the school s single-season record. The 7-foot-1 Brown s eight blocks against North Dakota (12/20) broke a school record for the Phoenix previously set by Nate Barnes against Northern Iowa on Dec. 11, 1982. It also tied the Resch Center record and helped the Phoenix break the team record for blocks in a game with 10. His average of 2.1 blocks per game ranks third in the Horizon League. He also had six blocks in his college debut against Minnesota Duluth. WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? Over the past nine games, Brown is averaging 11.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.8 blocks. In the four-game winning streak, Brown has averaged 10.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks. He has double-doubles in two of the team s last four games. Against Wisconsin on Dec. 13, Brown scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. RISING RAHMON Fletcher is now in the top-10 all-time in Green Bay s storied history in points, assists, steals and field goals made and attempted. If he continues at his current average this season, Fletcher will score over 1,700 career points and finish in the top five on the program s scoring list. The senior is also on pace to finish in the top-10 in scoring average, three-point field goals made and attempted and games played. MIGHTY MOUSE Fletcher, nicknamed Mouse, has been a consistent scorer this season, tallying double figures in 16 of 19 games, including at least 15 points 14 times. In the 16 games in which he has reached double figures, Fletcher is averaging 18.2 points and shooting 48.9 percent (110-225) from the field. I LL TAKE THAT Fletcher currently has 178 steals in his Phoenix career, ranking second in Green Bay history. The senior is tied for sixh in the Horizon League in steals per game, averaging 1.5 per contest. His five steals against Miami (Nov. 21) tied his career high and tied for the ninthmost in school history. CHARITY STRIPE Fletcher is 46-for-62 (74.2 percent) from PHOENIX NOTES HORIZON LEAGUE UPDATE the foul line this season. Brown has been to the line more than any other Green Bay player and is shooting 69.3 percent (52-75) this season. THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT Freshman Alec Brown, at 7-foot-1, is one of the tallest players in the country, while junior Eric Valentin, at 5-foot-4, is one of the shortest. The 21-inch size differential between the two players is the biggest of any teammates in the country. JOLT OF JARVIS Williams, who missed seven games this season with an injury, has been effective since returning to the lineup. Since being reinserted into the starting lineup at small forward, Williams is averaging 10.0 points and 6.3 rebounds over an eightgame stretch. He is shooting 30-of-56 (53.6) from the field during that span. COMEBACK KIDS Five of Green Bay s nine wins this season have come in games they have trailed in the second half. In three of those wins, Green Bay has been down at halftime - Miami (down 5), North Dakota (down 10) and Wyoming (down 5). Green Bay trailed Youngstown St. by eight in the second half before ending the game on a 28-5 run, including a 19-1 spurt while taking the lead. START IT UP Brian Wardle has used five different starting lineups this season. Daniel Turner (14 games), Troy Snyder (three games) and Jarvis Williams (two games) have all started at the four spot. Turner started his first college game on Nov. 27 against NDSU and has started the last 12 games for the Phoenix. After returning from injury, Williams has stared the past seven games at small forward. Perine and Brown have each started all 19 games for the Phoenix. TIME TO PLAY Freshman Kam Cerroni made his collegiate debut against Wisconsin, after sitting out the team s first 10 games of the season while being slated to redshirt. 2010-11 HL Standings Team HL Pct.
