Module One Welcome Module One Today is the Day we START to BUILD YOU a TOUR QUALITY Short Game Module One You already know the Short Game is so important You know Tour Pro s rely on their short game for low scores SO WHY? Why golfers won t practice their short game? Not Fun (until you start holing chip and pitch shots) Too Hard (we don t like to fail.. so we won t do stuff we aren t good at) We Are Going to Make You Good! In Week One... Going to Start you off nice and easy Making Backspin (for distance control) The Grip Module One 3 Chipping Strokes Focus on the Some-to-None Learn how to practice this all indoors
Chipping Strokes None to None = No Wrist motion in Backswing OR Through Swing Some to None = Wrist motion in Backswing... None in Through Swing Some to Some = Wrist action in Backswing AND Though Swing Chipping Strokes You can Watch a Video clip Taken from my Inner Circle monthly coaching club to show you each of these strokes Chipping Strokes None to None = LEAST amount of backspin = LEAST amount of distance control = Referred to as an arm and shoulder swing ** I never teach none-to-none. I can t stand to look at it. And you almost never see a tour player use it. Chipping Strokes Some to None = MOST amount of backspin = GREATEST distance control
Chipping Strokes Some to Some = MOST Height = GREATEST ability to STOP the Ball Quickly None to None Some to None Some to Some
Chipping Strokes Some-to-None = MOST amount of backspin = GREATEST distance control ** This is what I teach, mainly, because it is the swing used most by touring pros. The Grip The Grip The grip is very important in the short game The hands must be soft on the club, and the clubhead must feel as light as possible Choking the club down as low as possible on the grip lightens the weight of the clubhead The lighter the clubhead, the softer the feel we can develop
The left thumb pad touches the club as much opposite the left index finger as possible As club shaft is lowered to horizontal position, the grip will catch (cradle) up under the heel pad of the hand
As club shaft is lowered to horizontal position, the grip will catch (cradle) up under the heel pad of the hand At this point you could turn loose of everything but your index finger and the club would cradle in your hand not requiring to be held or grasped I call this Cradling Cradling - touch points are Heel of Hand... and index finger. Cradling - touch points are Heel of Hand... and index finger.
Cradling - touch points are Heel of Hand... and index finger. Placing the Right Hand on the Club Right hand: Middle section of middle two fingers touches the grip Do not close them yet. Lifeline of the right hand fits directly into the back of the large knuckle at the base of the left thumb
Right index finger and thumb pad - GENTLY pinch the grip Index finger DOES NOT hook under the grip in an attempt to touch the thumb The right hand pinky simply rests on top of the index finger of the left hand When the thumb and index finger are correct, the middle two fingers will NOT grab the club, although they will softly touch the grip You hands should feel too weak to do much with the club
Making the Some-To-None Stroke Making the Some-To-None Stroke In the chip stroke there is neither time nor space to make a weight shift Station weight in front hip This is a pre-shifting of the weight Pre-shifting the weight also makes it easier to keep our hands ahead of the clubhead Pre-Shift Your Weight The chipping stroke is a wrist or hand motion, and not an arm motion. This is NOT a SWEEPING motion. With the hands soft on the club, cradle the sole of the club off the dirt still in the grass. With a strong left hand position on the grip, you can feel as though you can make a hammering motion with the left hand.
Forearms will AUTOMATICALLY move IN RESPONSE TO the left wrist lifting the club When the clubhead taps the earth on this shot, the clubhead will stop in the grass and not swing through Clubhead finishes low to the ground and not far past the ball This tapping motion produces the greatest amount of backspin 1. 2. 3. 4. In Your Mind go from 1 to 4... Do not think about 2, 3, or the golf ball 1. 4.
Backswing = 5 to 10x more than the Through Swing 1. 4. I Made You a Short Video Clip. So you can SEE the Taping and Backward Spin. Home Work 1. Grip and re-grip a golf club 50 times each day. - 15 minutes? 2. Tap and Spin indoor practice. Some-to-None Ball travels only 1-2 feet. 50 shots each day. - 3 x 5 minutes? You can review these on the Indoor Practice Video clip. Next Week 1. Distance Control 2. Landing Spots 3. Controlling & Varying Height 4. Controlling Roll out
