Volume 51 - Issue 8 August, 2017 Air Capital Corvette Club Newsletter Message from the Prez... We only have one date to remember in August and it s different for everyone back to school. Watch out for those school busses. The July ice cream social meeting was a great success again this year. It s one of our best attended meetings and we had several guests. We acquired a new member and possibly a few more might join. It wasn t as hot as it s been in the past. A big THANK YOU to everyone who brought ice cream, goodies, ice, and drinks! Please thank Preston Hughes for escorting us to the Beaumont Hotel for the July drive and eat! Look for pictures in this newsletter (taken by Preston) of those who attended. The Beaumont Hotel is a former railroad hotel constructed in 1879 in Beaumont, Kansas. It originally opened and operated as the "Summit Hotel". It currently operates as a bed and breakfast and restaurant. We are so glad we decided to go to the Black Hills Corvette Classic Rally. Thank you Jay Shore for organizing a fantastic trip! Jay did a great job coordinating, scheduling, and keeping us all informed of the details. There were 600 in attendance for this Rally in Spearfish, SD. Wednesday we meet out east at the Warren Theater where we headed north and stopped in Council Bluffs, IA for lunch at Quaker Steak. After Lunch we continued north and stayed in Souix Falls, SD where we celebrated Mike Popp and Barbara Brotton s birthdays at the local Texas Roadhouse. (Continued on page 2) Page 1

After breakfast the caravan ended in Spearfish, SD. There was a small group of us that stopped at Wall Drug in Wall, SD to walk around the shops. That evening we had dinner outside with a DJ, while Mike Yager with Mid-America Motor Works gave away signed copies of his Corvette Bible book. Friday morning we headed out early and had breakfast with the Presidents at Mount Rushmore, then walked down and admired the amazing Mt. Rushmore Monument. Next we drove through Custer Park, with beautiful landscape, tunnels, rock formations and awesome views. That evening we went to the car show in downtown Spearfish. Saturday morning we again hit the road early where went to the Devils Tower National Monument in Hulett, WY where we hiked around the base of Devil s Tower for about 1 ½ miles. Afterwards we had lunch in Sundance, WY and then came back to Spearfish and drove through the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway with the top down, the only way to see the beautiful landscape of SD. That evening was the awards banquet dinner with dueling pianos (who put on a great show) and one of the speakers was a chief engineer from the Corvette factory giving us insight to some of the improvements they have been making to the modern day Corvettes. He touched briefly on the upcoming designs but would not discuss any details. Sunday was the drive home where Tim and I decided at the last minute to turn south and take a tour through the Badlands before make our long journey back to Wichita. We are so happy we had the chance to see this small area of our great nation. We highly recommend this trip to anyone that maybe interested in going. As always, if you have any ideas for club events or places to go, please share them with me or an E-Board member. See you at the next club meeting on August 2nd at Davis Moore Chevrolet. Volume 51 - Issue 8 August, 2017 Minutes from the July 5, 2017 ACCC Meeting The July Business Meeting was held at Sedgwick County Park, Shelter #4. The annual Ice Cream Social! The meeting was called to order by Debra Schmitz, President. Deb welcomed new member Kevin Hanschu. Rex Corbin announced plans for a club photo shoot at Stearman Field (Benton). An email will be sent with the date and time. Ice cream, toppings and many delicious desserts were enjoyed by all, so everyone was a winner (there was no door prize at this meeting). We also had dueling drones for entertainment. Glen Bailey and Frank Duvanel brought out their toys (as if it s not enough to drive America s sports car). There were no crashes or stunts or flights under the roof, so interest finally waned and the toys were put away. Thanks to Victor and Barbara Cooper for making sure everything was set up for us to enjoy! Sheri Dierking won the 50/50 pot. Respectively submitted, Preston Hughes, Secretary Page 3

August, 2017 Volume 51 - Issue 8 2017 Black Hills Corvette Classic (Submitted by Jay Shore) 2017 Black Hills Corvette Classic -- Spearfish South Dakota Traveled to Sioux Falls South Dakota, then across South Dakota to Spearfish, did 2 tours the next 2 days, then back to Wichita. Trip summary By the numbers: 2,222 -- total miles traveled 8 -- Corvettes in Group - Craig & Valerie Unruh, Tim & Deb Schmitz, Dave & Kathie Montague, Gary & Sandy Skinner, Don & Phyllis Grover, Dale & Barb Brotton, Jay Shore & Mike Popp, Keven Hanschu & Rick Cain. 2 -- speeding tickets in South Dakota on way across. 112 mph & 120 mph Nicest & friendliest Patrolman (Aric) you could ever meet. Aric talked with us about job, family, cars, trucks, airplanes in his patrol car. Several visited with Aric in the gas station/gift shop afterward. He gave us a brake & wrote tickets for 100 mph, $145. 2 -- speeding warnings on way across South Dakota (From Aric) 1 -- visit with local patrolmen about passing issue. 5 -- Hooligans from Wichita were awarded T-shirts for Close Encounters of the Law Enforcement kind. 1 -- Emergency Panic stop on I-80 shoulder, due to Extremely high Fluid level & Danger of leakage in Corvette. We depart Wichita at 7 am and stopped in Council Bluffs for lunch at Quaker Steak & Lube Restaurant, an automotive/motorcycle themed Restaurant Tim knew about. They seated us in the Vett Room which had a Corvette on the Wall. We had dinner at Texas Road House and Celebrated Mike & Barb s Birthdays. Each took a Spirited ride on the Birthday Saddle, Video is available. Stopped in at Wall Drug in Wall South Dakota. Visited Devil s Tower & Mount Rushmore on Tours led & Organized by the Black Hills Corvette Classic. Drove thru scenic Spearfish Canyon. Several cars Drove thru Old Town Deadwood got detoured down very narrow alleys due to Gun Fight show on Main Street. Not everybody takes a back alley tour of Deadwood. 3 Corvettes Drove down Main Street Deadwood just before street was shut down for the gun fight show with people lined up on both sides of the street. Looked like a Corvette Parade since no other cars on street, so we waved and gunned engines a bit. Tim & Deb visited the Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis & got to meet the owners wife. We attended the Banquet and enjoyed a good meal and live entertainment by the Wild Duces Dueling Piano s the last night. This event was celebrating it 46th anniversary and it is very well organized and run event. Tim & Deb drove thru the Badlands on return & shared pictures with the rest of us, since we ran short of time on trip to Spearfish, due to our Close Encounter of the Law Enforcement kind. We had a great group that had lots of fun together. Thanks Jay Page 4
