Indy Mopar Club News April 2009 www.indymoparclub.com Jan Peel and Dave Watt, editors Steve Wisdom, President Bob Rosenberger, Vice President Mike Leyes, Treasurer Karen Rosenberger, Secretary Meetings are the last Thursday of every month except November & December 2009 schedule of events. More events and details on the way. Next regular meeting: Thursday April 30, 2009 will be held at MCL Cafeteria, 3630 South East street Indianapolis (US 31- N of Southern Plaza between Sumner & National). Meet for dinner at 6pm, meeting at 7pm. A Map Quest link is available on the IMC website. The influence of cars By Dave Watt Dave s Red 73 340 Duster Dave s Orange 69 Road Runner 440 6BBL As far back as kindergarten, I can remember being interested in Hot Wheels and other small cars. A few years later was drawing pictures of cars, usually during class instead of being attentive. My new friend Jim had a lot of drag racing photos and models of, Don The Snake Prudhomme, Jungle Jim Lieberman, Tom McEwen, etc. for us to draw pictures of. Jim s dad used to race in NHRA Stock Eliminator. He took us to the 1978 U.S. Nationals which was a thrill for an 11 year old; I was REALLY hooked on cars after that. My dad had been working for Chrysler since 1965 but wasn t really a car guy, he and mom did travel to some of the Indy car, sprint and midget races as far away as Watkins Glen New York. He started attending the Indy 500 as a kid (by jumping the fence), and allowed me to attend my first 500 in 1979. Our family has a block of 30 seats which is a lot of fun sitting with family and friends. I haven t missed a race since. Around that time we had moved to New Castle. IMC April 2009 Page 1

By 17 years old I had been working about 30-35 hours a week at a fast food chicken restaurant, plus mowing a lot of grass, trimming shrubs, dog sitting, baby sitting, raking leaves, anything to make a buck. I had been saving a lot of money and was looking at many different cars. A black 55 Chevy was sitting in a back yard along I-70 in Indy that really caught my eye (even though I hadn t seen American Graffiti yet). Dad said no to the 55 and a 69 Super Bee 383 4-speed with a spun main bearing. In June 1985, we went to Evansville, near my grandparent s house was a small used car lot where a red 73 340 Duster sat, just like the One for the Money ads in Hot Rod magazine. Dad said no but Mom was persistent the next few days, she and I went back on Tuesday to pick it up. We test drove it over to grandma and grandpa s; he was about half deaf and said, Man, this thing is loud, that told me it was very loud. He and I went one square block which was enough for him. Driving back to New Castle on I-70 just outside of Terre Haute, the engine threw a rod, instant initiation into the mechanics of an automobile. After 24 years of ownership, there isn t enough space to tell all the stories about my Duster; it s truly part of the family. Shortly after buying the Duster, there was a Vitamin C orange 1969 440 6BBL Road Runner in town, skinny tires up front, big L-60 s out back, just a killer stance. I vowed to buy it some day, but when it was for sale in 98, the timing wasn t right. By March of 99, Mike L. had left a message for me saying your dream car is for sale in Hemmings but is in Canada. It was identical to the Road Runner in New Castle but is a 4-speed which was my preference. Mike and I picked it up in Toronto shortly after the purchase. It is the third A12 package Road Runner built by Chrysler, and the first in Vitamin C orange. After I did an extensive rotisserie restoration, it was ready for shows and muscle car drag races by July 2006. I enjoyed it the last few years but was ready to start a new project. There isn t enough room for another car, so the decision was to sell. What will be sitting in my garage next? Stay tuned. Indy Mopar Members News Welcome to new members Mel & Barbara Crane of Avon, 1972 Dodge Challenger, 2006 Dodge Ram, and 2009 Dodge Charger; Ben & Krissy Gorman of Indianapolis, no vehicle listed; Dave & Dianne Himes of Westfield, 1955 Chevy Pro Mod with Mopar Engine; Bill Likens of Greenwood, 1987 Dodge Ramcharger; Jay Mays of Indianapolis, 1971 Plymouth Roadrunner clone; and Brad White of Coatesville, 1969 Dodge Charger (General Lee) and 1978 Dodge Monaco (Rosco s Cop Car). We hope to see you soon at a meeting or car show. Stan Peel passed away April 5 th in our home with loved ones here with him. I would like to thank everyone for all the prayers, cards, phone calls, e-mails, and visits. Stan loved his Plymouths and considered the Indy Mopar Club members as his extended family. The friendship of so many people meant a lot to him. He enjoyed the car shows and meetings. May God bless all of you. Jan Peel IMC April 2009 Page 2

Angels don't wear halos anymore. I forget why, but scientists are working on it. ~~~Olive, 9 It's not easy to become an angel! First, you die. Then you go to Heaven, and then there's still the flight training to go through. And then you got to agree to wear those angel clothes. ~~~Matthew, 9 Angels work for God and watch over kids when God has to go do something else. ~~~Mitchell, 7 My guardian angel helps me with math, but he's not much good for science. ~~~Henry, 8 Angels don't eat, but they drink milk from Holy Cows!!! ~~~Jack, 6 Angels talk all the way while they're flying you up to heaven. The main subject is where you went wrong before you got dead. ~~~Daniel, 9 When an angel gets mad, he takes a deep breath and counts to ten. And when he lets out his breath, somewhere there's a tornado. ~~~Reagan, 10 Angels have a lot to do and they keep very busy. If you lose a tooth, an angel comes in through your window and leaves money under your pillow. Then when it gets cold, angels go south for the winter. ~~~Sara, 6 Angels live in cloud houses made by God and his son, who's a very good carpenter. ~~~Jared, 8 All angels are girls because they gotta wear dresses and boys didn't go for it. ~~~Antonio, 9 My angel is my grandma who died last year. She got a big head start on helping me while she was still down here on earth. ~~~ Lynn, 9 Some of the angels are in charge of helping heal sick animals and pets. And if they don't make the animals get better, they help the child get over it. ~~~ Vicki, 8 What I don't get about angels is why, when someone is in love, they shoot arrows at them. ~~~ Sarah, 7 True Friendship is like sound Health, the value of it is seldom known until it is lost. A True Story by Jan Peel My 8 ½ year old grandson, Matt, was having a hard time accepting his Grandpa Stan s death. He told me he was sad. I told him that It s okay to be sad but do you know where Grandpa is now? He said Yeah, he s in heaven. I replied And do you know what he s doing? He looked up at me and said No. I said He s folding his wings back, getting in his old 54 Plymouth Convertible, picking up his Dad, sisters Pat and Nancy, and his grandson Eric. And they are driving down the streets of Heaven singing for all they are worth. Matt got the biggest grin on his face and was well content then. It s hard to explain to a young one what Heaven is when we really don t know ourselves. But it s got to be good. Happy Mother s Day to all the Mothers in our club Without your support the guys wouldn t be able to have as much fun as they do with their cars. IMC April 2009 Page 6
