Players and Coaches COACHING CAREER: Joel Patrick Skinner named manager of the Red Wings on December 20, 2017 this season will be his second in the Twins organization set to manage his 14th minor league season and seventh in the International League took 2017 off after spending the previous five years in the White Sox organization as manager of Single-A Winston-Salem (2016) and Triple-A Charlotte (2012-15) spent 2011 as bench coach for Oakland managed in the Indians organization with Double-A Akron (1998-99, 2010), Triple-A Buffalo (2000), Single-A Kinston (1997), Single-A Columbus (1996) and Short-A Watertown (1995) named the interim manager of the Tribe on July 11, 2002 after Charlie Manuel was let go following a contract dispute also served on Cleveland s major league staff as bench coach (2006) and third base coach (2001-02, 03-05, 07-09) catching instructor for the Indians in 1994 Joel s father, Bob, played 12 MLB seasons with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and St. Louis from 1954-66 and managed parts of three seasons with the Phillies from 1968-69 and Padres in 1977 the Skinners are one of three father-son tandems to manage in the major leagues: former Red Wing George Sisler (St. Louis Browns, 1924-26) and his son, Dick (Cincinnati Reds, 1964-65) and Bob Boone (Kansas City Royals, 1995-97 and Cincinnati, 2001-03) and his son, Aaron (New York-AL, -current). PLAYING CAREER: Skinner was drafted in the 37th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1979 out of Mission Bay High School (San Diego, CA) chosen by Chicago (AL) as a free agent compensation pick on February 2, 1982 made his MLB debut with the White Sox in game one on June 12 at Oakland started his first MLB game in the second game June 12 at Oakland, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored traded with Ron Kittle and Wayne Tolleson to New York (AL) for Ron Hassey, Carlos Martinez and a player to be named later on July 30, 1986 traded by the Yankees with Turner Ward to Cleveland for Mel Hall on March 19, 1989 appeared in 564 games, 560 at catcher, over nine MLB seasons with the White Sox, Yankees and Indians also played in 680 minor league games over 10 years. AWARDS AND ACCOLADES: Skinner was voted the Best Manager Prospect in the International League by Baseball America following the 2015 season with Triple-A Charlotte named Minor League Manager of the Year by Baseball America and The Sporting News in 2000 after leading Triple-A Buffalo to the Governors Cup Finals earned USA Today Baseball Weekly s Minor League Manager of the Year in 1998 with Double-A Akron named league Manager of the Year three times: International League in 2000 with Triple-A Buffalo, Carolina League in 1997 with Single-A Kinston and New York-Penn League in 1995 with Short-A Watertown. COACHING CAREER: Stu Cliburn begins his seventh overall season as Red Wings pitching coach, fourth since 2008, and 27th year in the Twins organization served the same role for the Double-A affiliate in Chattanooga (2015) and New Britain (1999-05, 09-14), Single-A affiliate in Fort Myers (98), Fort Wayne (94-97) and Rookie Elizabethton (93) pitching coach for California s Single-A affiliate in Palm Springs from 1991-92 also served as pitching coach for Scottsdale in the Arizona Fall League (96) and Wilmington of the Maryland Fall League (98). Players and Coaches COACHING CAREER: Mike McCarthy is in his second season as a coach at any level has served as Field Coordinator for Baseball Miracles, a 100% volunteer organization that helps underprivileged youth around the world get baseball equipment and instruction, since 2013. He spent the prior five seasons working with Minnesota s Double-A team in Chattanooga (2015-17) and New Britain (2013-14). Johnson joined the Twins as a spring training intern in 2005 and also interned with the Kansas City Chiefs during preseason camp that summer. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2006. Chris resides in Minneapolis with his wife, Lindsey, and their two dogs. Jacob Dean Strength & Conditioning Coach Jacob Dean is in his third season with the Twins organization and first as Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Rochester Red Wings. He served in the same role from 2017-18 with Single-A Ft. Myers, winning the Florida State League Championship last season with the Miracle. Dean is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and studied Human Performance and Exercise Science at the University of Alabama, earning his Master s Degree in December, 2016. PROFESSIONAL: Entering his 11th professional season, second in the Twins organization after signing as a minor league free agent on August 21, originally selected by Cleveland in the fifth round (115th overall) of the 2009 Draft out of Faulkner University (Montgomery, AL) also selected by Milwaukee in the 27th round of the 2008 Draft, but did not sign earned Eastern League mid-season All-Star honors with Double-A Akron of in 2011 named Pitcher of the Week twice: August 8, 2011 with Akron and June 1, 2010 with Single-A Lake County of the Midwest League. Began the season with Sugar Land of the Independent Atlantic League after signing with the Skeeters, June 1 had contract sold to Minnesota, August 21 and was assigned to Double-A Chattanooga. Did not allow a run in 10 straight appearances (9.1 IP) while surrendering just three hits and one walk while striking out 13 from June 16-July 3. The Skeeters were 22-8 in games he pitched in. Surrendered his lone run with the Lookouts in his first appearance on August 21 at Montgomery did not allow a run in 8.0 innings over his final four games while allowing six hits and four walks while striking out nine.
