Carolina Shag Club Newsletter For the Love of Shag April 2016 A Proud Member of: From Your Club President, Dan Ellington Hi Everyone; Sometimes we forget about important things in life until events overshadow our days. Many of us have experienced personal tragedies, illnesses, surgeries and recuperation this year. Some have celebrated weddings, welcomed new grandchildren and faced retirement. It occurs to me that we are blessed with wonderful friends who share in our joy and offer solace during our trials. What better reason to be a member of the Carolina Shag Club! We have a number of events coming in April. Remember the CSA contest on the 1 st and 2 nd. SOS begins on the 15 th. We have 31 SOS cards remaining to be sold. Cards are $30. You save $5 by purchasing a card from a shag club versus purchasing one at North Myrtle Beach. Please see me or Brenda to purchase. Upcoming in May is our major fund raising event for our charities. Our golf tournament will be held on May the 14 th at Willow Creek Country Club in Greer. We raise the largest share of donations to Camp Courage and The Ellen Taylor Foundation from the proceeds of this event. All monies raised above expenses are donated to our charities. Any of you who play golf or have friends and family members that play, please encourage them to participate this year. Also, many opportunities are available for donations, sponsors and volunteers. The flyer for our tournament is attached to this newsletter and all necessary forms to play or sponsor are available on our website. Ann Fulbright turns 70; Friends Gather and Celebrate. Ann Fulbright, long time Carolina Shag Club member, club historian, board member, Wall of Fame member and holder of other club titles and honors celebrated her 70 th birthday on March 2nd. To recognize this milestone in Ann s life, her friends threw a not-so-secret surprise party to well, to help her see another birthday through. Looking around that Wednesday night, you d see more than 100 CSC members spending time with her, reminiscing, joking and sharing an occasional adult beverage. Ann also had family members attending to join in the celebration. Records are sketchy going back that far but archeologists reviewing the clay tablet club records from early CSC time indicate Ann has been a member since the Paleolithic Era. Happy Birthday Ann! Ann Fulbright (center) along with numerous CSC friends group around Ann to wish her a happy 70 th birthday. Ann s daughter stands directly behind her. Party organizers passed the word to others to wear their black pants and white blouses/shirts to mimic Ann s preferred style of attire. Photo by Skip Watkins One of Ann s friends brought along a variety of photos taken of Ann in her younger days. One that drew particular raves was the one shown above depicting Ann during the Southern Antebellum days. Photo by a close friend 7

The club had 102 persons in attendance that evening including several CSC members. Photo by Skip Watkins Carolina Shag Club s St. Patrick s Day party is always a good time. This party was particularly noteworthy for one member, Susan Cooper of Greenville. Pictured here with her husband, Randy she won the CSC split-the-pot raffle held on Saturday, March 12 th at The Phoenix. Ways & Means members Dianne and Wayne Hembree sold $382 in raffle tickets. Susan s prize was $191 or half of the pot. Photo by Skip Watkins 8

DJ Throwdown at Ducks in North Myrtle Beach Shag DJ s from all over the south converged on North Myrtle Beach during the first weekend in March. They came together to host the 25 th Annual DJ Throwdown, a fundraiser for the organization. The Association of Beach and Shag Deejays purpose is to promote the distribution and preservation of beach and shag music. This "beach and shag" lifestyle includes the shag dance, beach and shag gatherings of all sizes, shag dance contests, junior (for participants less than 21 years old) events and much, much more. Deejays are involved at every level of these, from simply playing the music to being the guiding force or heading up shag events. They often serve as individual shag club officers, officers in larger organizations (such as the Society of Stranders or the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs) or, in some cases, sponsors or club owners. Equally important, they are active, contributing participants and an integral part of national, regional and local events and efforts for charity---for both individuals and causes. Junior Shaggers and Families Invited to Multiple Events in 2016 Workshops planned at The Phoenix, Runway Café and North Myrtle Beach with final schedules to be announced. Girls and boys, along with parents and grandparents can participate in one or several Junior Shaggers workshop during this year. The next scheduled Junior Shag Workshop will be April 9 th at The Runway Café at the Greenville Downtown Airport. This and other workshops are a lead-in for Junior SOS at North Myrtle Beach in mid-july. In prior years, workshops had been taught by pro-shaggers Jeff and Dede Ward. They will likely be the leaders in 2016. During workshops they review basic steps, along with turns and spins. In this photo taken in July 2015, Jeff Ward (right) goes over a dance step for Mattison (left) and Mackenzie Scott at a Junior Shaggers workshop at The Phoenix Inn in Greenville, S.C. The girls are granddaughters of Glenn and Kathy Cole. Photo courtesy Dede Ward In 2016, Junior Shag Association (JSA) will host the 25th anniversary of their largest and greatest junior dance event in the area, referred to Junior SOS. The dates for Junior SOS 2016 are July 12-17. The headquarters will once again be the O.D. Beach and Golf Resort in North Myrtle Beach. The JSA website states, We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to have the resort serve as our headquarters for Junior SOS. According to the Junior Shaggers website, this annual event is the biggest and greatest junior dance event in the world This provides the opportunity for kids to dance in the great clubs the adults get to dance at in North Myrtle Beach. The Junior Shag Association (JSA) is a "Public Charity", with a 501 (c) (3) status. The association was formed to help junior shaggers and others less than 21 years old who want to learn about shagging and shag dance music. The Association offers various types of help with the organization of activities, and other related business. The JSA year runs from July 1-June 30. Another supporter of Junior Shaggers is The Ellen Taylor Foundation for Junior Shaggers ("ETFJS"). The ETFJS was founded in 2007 by Mrs. Ellen Taylor and incorporated as a SC 501-3(c) organization in 2008. The purpose of the ETFJS is to remove financial barriers that prevent those under 21 from learning and participating in the shag dance. Examples of this include providing free dance shoes, funding workshops, and providing meal, lodging, and gas vouchers for shag dance events such as Junior SOS at North Myrtle Beach. 12
