LINK S MARTIAL ARTS FEBRUARY 2019 NEWSLETTER Link s Martial Arts Word of the Month Extreme weather brings extreme actions! At LMA our Tricking program consists of young, dedicated students who work hard physically and mentally to the extreme. They push themselves to master physically demanding tricks. Not everyone is able to be a martial artist who tricks, but we all can push ourselves to the extreme mentally. Our mindset begins with our own personal strength. Personal strength begins with how you view yourself. If you are a person that truly believes you can do anything you set your mind to, then you have already begun to lay the foundation for Personal Strength. Having a strong mindset and positive attitude is a learned skill. How do you bring out your inner extreme? ourselves. Thinking and believing in yourself in a positive way will allow you to go the extra mile to succeed. Being supportive and positive toward others is also a character trait of personal strength. We can influence people by having a courteous and positive attitude. It is always better to lift someone with positive words than to put them down with negative ones. The Tenets of Tae Kwon Do can help to grow and maintain your personal strength. The Tenets, when practiced daily, make life more meaningful. The tenets support us on our journey to becoming a better person. BODY, MIND, SPIRIT BLUE ZONES PROJECT Blue Zones uses the Japanese word, Moai, meaning a group of lifelong friends, or a social group that provides support. To become successful in the completion of our goals requires the ability to reach out to people. Students are welcome to reach out to Link s Martial Arts Link family for many aspects. We are always happy to be of support. The Link family has worked hard over the past 2 years to adopt many of the Blue Zones principles. We would like to share our research, experiences and success with our students. This month we would like to share a positive step in nutrition. Too much sugar harms your body, mind, & spirit Research shows that the Standard American Diet has allowed for the consumption of too much sugar. Much of the sugar consumed comes from hidden sources in the food products we choose at the store. How do we start a healthier path? A good way to start is to identify sugar in the ingredient labels of the products that we buy. Skip any products that list added sugar among its ingredients. Sugar is added to products like peanut butter, vegetable broth, canned beans, ketchup, tomato products, salad dressing, bread, pasta and so much more. Many products that you think are healthy due to fabulous advertising are simply loaded with sugar, for example energy bars, sports drinks, and protein powders. Be sure your choices have no added sugar. Getting started reading labels takes a time commitment, however, it will only slow you down for a short while, once you have chosen the healthier food brands, mindful shopping becomes quick and easy. Food choices are not about being strict or perfect. Food choices are about making better decisions for your health over time Link s Martial Arts ***A great strategy to use when purchasing processed products is to choose products containing 3 or less ingredients on the label. For example, your peanut butter label should only list 1 ingredient, Peanuts! There are many names used to identify sugar. Knowing what these terms are helps us to make an educated decision on what to buy. Tips to avoid hidden sugar in your food Avoid foods containing the chemical name for sugar - Ingredients ending in the letters -ose Avoid foods containing the Sugar derived from corn - Corn sugar, Gluco-malt, Glucose sugar, High fructose corn syrup, Karo Avoid foods containing the Sugar derived from cane sugar - Molasses, White sugar, Demerara sugar, treacle, cane juice, brown sugar Be aware that manufacturer will often split the sugar names so that sugar ingredients can be placed farther down the list under multiple names. It can be difficult giving up all that hidden sugar, it is what your mouth has become accustom to. Rest easy, your taste buds will be restored and you will enjoy the many benefits from getting rid of hidden sugar in your diet. Making healthier decisions about the products we buy is a great first step on a healthier path. Feel free to ask us questions you might have on your journey to making healthier choices. Together we truly can achieve more!
