ALBUQUERQUE ISOTOPES (80-64, 0-0) AT OMAHA STORM CHASERS (83-61, 0-0) RHP Fernando Nieve (7-9, 5. 96 ERA) vs. RHP Jake Odorizzi (11-3, 2.93 ERA) Werner Park Wednesday, September 5 6:05 P.M. MT PCL American Conference Finals Game #: 1 OGLE ORCHESTRATES 4-3 TOPES WIN: Making his Triple-A debut, Tyler Ogle went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI to lead the Albuquerque Isotopes to a 4-3 series-clinching win over the Omaha Storm Chasers Monday afternoon at Isotopes Park. Omaha snagged a quick 1-0 lead in the first but the Topes responded quickly in the second as Elian Herrera and Tony Gwynn Jr. slapped back-to-back singles in front of a walk to Ozzie Martinez that loaded the bases. Ogle then wasted little time collecting his first Triple-A hit, promptly plating two runs with a base knock to right that gave Albuquerque a 2-1 edge. The Storm Chasers resumed the see-saw battle in the third, retaking the lead beginning with a one-out double from Derrick Robinson, who scored two batters later on a single courtesy of Mitch Maier, knotting the contest 2-2. Wil Myers and Clint Robinson then collected consecutive hits, the latter of which plated Maier to put Omaha up 3-2. Albuquerque responded in the fourth, tying the score 3-3 when Herrera coaxed a walk, advanced to second on a groundout from Gwynn and came to rest at third on a single from Martinez. Ogle continued his heroics, poking another RBI single to right that brought Herrera in from third. The catcher wasn t finished quite yet though, and after Gwynn led off the sixth with a double, Ogle knocked his third hit of the afternoon, this time a single up the middle that scored the runner from second and gave the home team a 4-3 advantage. Isotopes reliever Francisco Felix took over from there, authoring 3.2 scoreless frames in which he walked two and fanned one. Following Felix s departure, reliever Scott Rice struck out Maier for the final out of the game, preserving a 4-3 Albuquerque win. NOTHING BUT NIEVE: The Topes begin their quest for a Pacific Coast League title behind right-hander Fernando Nieve, who has been excellent for Albuquerque down the stretch, especially on the road. In his last three appearances away from Isotopes Park, Nieve is 2-1 with a 3.44 ERA (7 ER / 18.1 IP) and has fanned 24 over that span while walking just two. His only blemish was a hard-luck defeat at Oklahoma City on August 30 when he authored 7.0 strong frames, allowing just three runs, two earned, on six hits in a 3-1 loss to the RedHawks. Coincidentally, the right-hander has alternated wins and losses in each of his five starts, with defeats on August 10, August 20 being followed immediately by wins on August 15 and August 25. BACK TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN: It seems fitting that the Isotopes first playoff series in three years should begin at the exact same place their magical 10th season started, at Omaha s Werner Park. On April 5, the Topes started the 2012 campaign with a series in Nebraska and ended their regular season with a series against Omaha at Isotopes Park. If the season series between these two clubs is any indication, it could be a playoff set dominated by the home team. In two series at Werner Park this year, Albuquerque went 2-6, but returned the favor and went 5-3 against the Chasers at The Lab. THE SECOND SEASON: For the first time since 2009, the Isotopes are back in the PCL postseason after posting an 80-64 record in the regular season, tying a franchise high for wins in a season while achieving the fourth-best record in the circuit. It s extremely rare but the Topes actually have two players who were members of the team s last playoff squad. Right-handed relievers Tim Corcoran and Francisco Felix were both a part of the 2009 team that also won 80 times while dominating the PCL s American Southern Division. This time around, the Topes hope to get over the hump and win their first playoff series in franchise history. In 2003, Albuquerque bowed out in four games to the Nashville Sounds before getting swept in three games by the Memphis Redbirds in 2009. ELIAN ELAN: Albuquerque heads into the playoffs riding the hot bat of Elian Herrera, who in his last five games has racked up 10 hits in 20 at-bats (.500) while scoring four runs, hitting two triples, and driving in five. Herrera has also had success against Omaha, batting.421 (16x38) with 10 runs, five triples, and 10 RBI in eight games against the Chasers this season. Pitched 6.0 shutout innings on July 13 at Nashville, his second shutout performance of the season, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out six in a 7-0 Topes win. The victory was his second in as many starts. Had his best outing of the season on June 8 vs. Memphis when he authored 7.0 shutout innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out two in a 12-0 Topes win. Had an excellent outing on May 27 vs. Oklahoma City when he was pressed into service on three days rest when Michael Antonini was scratched and pitched 5.0 solid innings, allowing a run on three hits while walking one and striking out a season-high seven in an 11-9 win. Missed 15 days while on the Disabled List recovering from a hamstring strain. After 2.0 innings at New Orleans on April 26, Nieve came out to warm up for the third but could no further, leaving the game with a strained hamstring. The right-hander was placed on the DL the next day. Also had an outing on April 18 vs. Iowa at Isotopes Park that was truncated by an ejection. With two outs in the top of the third, Nieve hit Anthony Rizzo with a pitch and was immediately ejected by home plate umpire Mike Jarboe, ending the right-hander s day after 2.2 innings in which he allowed three runs on four hits while walking none and striking out three. Albuquerque went on to win the game 6-4. Enjoyed a terrific outing in the Topes home opener on April 13 when he held the Omaha Storm Chasers to four runs, three earned, on seven hits in six strong innings of a 7-4 Topes win. His start Isotopes Park debut stood in stark contrast to his season debut at Omaha on April 8, when he lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing nine runs on 11 hits while walking two and striking out two in a 17-11 Topes loss. 2011: Spent a majority of the season pitching for the Doosan Bears in the Korean Baseball Organization appeared in 25 games going 3-6 and a 6.09 ERA... finished the season tied for third on the team with six saves also fanned 66 batters which ranked fourth amongst Bears pitchers... started the season with Triple-A Oklahoma City in the Houston organization where he made three starts for the RedHawks, going 1-2 with a 7.63 ERA (13 ER / 15.1 IP)... granted his release on April 27.
