Báez last night became the first Cub with consecutive multi-homer games since Alfonso Soriano in May of 2008, as the Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 13-5, to even this three-game set heading into today s rubber match. Báez last night hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the second inning before adding another homer in the eighth inning his four homers (all in the last two days) tie him with Minnesota s Brian Dozier and Atlanta s Ozzie Albies for the most by any second baseman in the majors this season Baez 10 RBI thus far lead all N.L. second baseman and are tied for fifth-most in the N.L. overall. Báez, who first recorded a multi-homer effort on August 7, 2014 at Colorado, is just the second Cub ever to record at least three multi-homer games as a second baseman, joining Ryne Sandberg (24 multi-homer games). PRODUCTIVE NIGHT AT THE PLATE: The Cubs last night sported four-run frames in the second, sixth and seventh innings it marked the first time the Cubs had three innings with at least four runs in each since June 17, 2015, in a 17-0 win at Cleveland it was the first time the Cubs turned the trick at Wrigley Field since April 30, 2008, in a 19-5 win vs. Milwaukee. Chicago last night recorded seven doubles and three homers in a game at Wrigley Field for the first time in nearly 67 years, previously doing so on May 18, 1951 vs. the Phillies (7 doubles, 3 homers in an 18-9 win) the team last turned the trick on the road, August 18, 1995 at Colorado (7 doubles, 3 homers in a 26-7 win). THE PROFESSOR: Kyle Hendricks today toes the rubber for his third start of the season and the first at Wrigley Field he recorded a 2.73 ERA (20 ER/66.0 IP) in his final 11 home starts beginning last May, the fourth-lowest home ERA among N.L. hurlers in that span (min 10 GS). Hendricks 2.97 career ERA ranks third among all active pitchers with at least 100 starts, trailing only Clayton Kershaw (2.36) and Chris Sale (2.96) Kyle ranks ahead of Jacob degrom (2.98) and Madison Bumgarner (3.01). Hendricks.639 OPS against is fifth-lowest of any active pitcher with at least 100 starts and third-lowest among right-handed pitchers overall he trails only Kershaw (.569), Stephen Strasburg (.624), Sale (.626) and degrom (.637). WHO KNEW?: Willson Contreras is hitting.387 (12-for-31) with a 1.053 OPS in his last eight games after starting the campaign 2-for-12 since making his big league debut, June 17, 2016, his 189 hits rank fourth among N.L. backstops (San Francisco s Buster Posey leads with 268) while his 75 extra-base hits rank fifth (Dodgers Yasmani Grandal leads with 83).
