Corrado was appointed head coach during the summer of 2006 after being named the associate head coach one year earlier. The 2009 and 2010 back-to-back CAA and BIG EAST Coach of the Year has led the Wildcats to unprecedented success in recent seasons. During the past five years, Corrado has garnered a.571 overall winning percentage while posting a.667 winning percentage the past three seasons. His career record currently stands at 44-33 following the conclusion of the 2011 campaign, while posting a 32-16 record over last three years. 2011 proved to be another historic season under Corrado's direction. After guiding the team to an 11-5 overall record and going 3-3 in the highly-competitive BIG EAST Conference, Villanova earned their first-ever at-large berth to the 2011 NCAA postseason after successfully navigating one of the toughest regular-season schedules in the nation. Traveling to the University of Denver in what would be the first NCAA tournament game to be played west of the Mississippi, the Wildcats narrowly fell to the Pioneeres, 13-10, on Denver's home turf. Despite the loss, 2011 saw Villanova reach their highest ranking in program history at No. 7 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse and USILA polls while being ranked well inside the top-20 for 14 weeks during the season. In 2010, Corrado guided Villanova to a 10-5 overall and 4-2 conference record in the inaugural season of BIG EAST men's lacrosse, finishing in third place in the league and marking just the third time in program history that Villanova had won at least 10 regular-season games since its inception as a varsity sport in 1981. Corrado has led several players to individual accolades since being appointed head coach. Under his defensive tutelage, Corrado guided the most decorated Villanova Lacrosse player of all time into the national spotlight in longstick midfielder Brian Karalunas. Following the 2011 season, Karalunas became Villanova's first three-time USILA All-American and the first men's lacrosse player to be named a first team All-America selection. Additionally, the back-to-back 2010 and 2011 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year was twice named a First Team All-BIG EAST honoree in addition to being selected as the 35th overall pick in the 2011 Major League Lacrosse Collegeiate Draft by the Long Island Lizards. Karalunas finished his career as Villanova's and the NCAA's career leader with 153 caused turnovers and ranks ninth all-time at Villanova with 213 ground balls. Additionally, Chris 2012 Villanova lacrosse Game Notes Game 2 vs. Bucknell Ficke and Karalunas were both selected to play in the USILA Division I/II North/South All- Star game following the conclusion of the 2011 season. on the offensive end, Kevin Cunningham (2011 All-BIG EAST First Team, 2010 All- BIG EAST Second Team), Jack Rice (2011 All-BIG EAST First Team), Paul Webber (2010 USILA Honorable Mention All- American, BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, First Team All-BIG EAST) and Mark Scioscia (2010 All-BIG EAST Second Team) have all earned national recognition under Corrado's expertise. In November of 2005, Corrado was inducted into the Villanova Varsity Club Hall of Fame, being just the fourth lacrosse player to ever receive this honor. Previous inductees from the men's lacrosse program include Bob Adams (Class of 1980), Bill Hook (1980) and teammate Drew Cunningham (1985). As a student-athlete, Corrado was a four-year starter at Villanova from 1984-1987. He was the team's Rookie of the Year in `84 and named co-captain and Most Valuable Player in his senior season when he collected a team-high 93 ground balls. For his career, Corrado tallied four goals and five assists from the offensive end of the field and was an All-County player for Islip (N.Y.) High School prior to becoming a Wildcat. Upon graduation in 1987, Corrado served four years in the U.S. Navy where he was based out of Norfolk, Va. He is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War and recently retired as a Commander from the Naval Reserves. Corrado received his Master's degree in Education from Temple University in 2002. GAMe 1 No. 10 VillANoVA 17, lehigh 7 Saturday february 18th, 2012, Bethlehem, Pa. No. 10 Villanova (1-0, 0-0) scored ten unanswered second half goals en route to a 17-7 victory over Lehigh (1-1, 0-0) on Saturday afternoon at Ulrich Sports Complex. 11 different Wildcats posted points as Villanova claimed their first win at Lehigh since the 2003 season. The triumph also marks the largest margin of victory over an opponent in a season opener since Feb. 24th, 2002 in a 19-7 win over St. Joseph's. Senior Kevin Cunningham (Garden City, N.Y./Kellenberg) led the offensive effort with five goals and two assists, while junior Will Casertano (Millbrook, N.Y./Salisbury School) and sophomore Kevin o'neil (Cockysville, Md./Boys' Latin) posted five points apiece. Senior goalkeeper Dan Gutierrez (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) made 12 saves in his season debut. "Can't think of a much better way to start the year," says Head Coach Mike Corrado. "Kevin Cunningham had a great game scoring seven points and five goals. Croonquist played really well against a good face-off team, winning three-quarters of his takes and [Dan] Gutierrez had a solid game in goal for us. All in all, it was a great opener" The Wildcats held Lehigh scoreless for 36:37 - the longest scoring drought Villanova has held its opponents to since facing Delaware on April 9th, 2011, where they stifled a Blue Hen offense for 42:36. Corrado continues, "We had eight different guys score goals and 11 point scorers today. I give a lot of credit to our upperclassmen and we showed a lot of depth. This game is a terrific way to lead into our home opener against Bucknell next weekend." Villanova wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when senior Matt Bell (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) notched the season opening point from classmate C.J. Small (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) just 2:11 into the contest, but the Mountain Hawks were quick to respond when Roman Lao-Gosney found an opening just under three minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. The Wildcats retaliated as Cunningham posted two quick goals at the 8:20 and 4:36 marks to put VU up 3-1, and continued a scoring run with a total of six unanswered goals from o'neil, Small, Casertano and junior Jack Rice (Baltimore, Md./Boys' Latin) to give Villanova a 7-1 lead going into the second quarter. The Mountain Hawks battled back, posting two man-up goals within 16 seconds from Dan Taylor and Kyle Stiefel at the 10:33 and 10:17 marks, while Noah Molnar followed up to get Lehigh to within three at 7-4 with 8:23 remaining in the half. VU's Cunningham and Casertano responded just 2:19 later, giving the Wildcats a comfortable 9-4 lead going into halftime. At the break, Villanova led Lehigh 16-13 in shots on goal while LU found the 17-13 advantage in ground balls. Coming out of the locker room, a breakout third quarter rally clearly favored the Villanova offense with Cunningham posting two goals, while Casertano, Small and senior CJ Burke (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) each attributing one notch apiece. o'neil stole the show in the stanza and dished out three of his four assists while Small and junior Nick Doherty (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) provided the additional helps to close out the quarter 14-4 in favor of the Wildcats. Villanova would continue their scoring streak in the final 15 2012 GAMe SUMMARieS minutes with Rice, Casertano and senior Michael Vigilante (Masspequa, N.Y./Massapequa) rounding out the Villanova effort to close the match. Lehigh would score the final three goals finalize the game at 17-7 in favor of VU. Villanova capitalized on their opportunities, cashing in on sixof-nine extra-man chances. The Mountain Hawks were man down for a total of 8:30 compared to only 2:30 from Villanova. Additionally, Villanova dominated in the final shot count, 40-31 while the ground ball contest favored Lehigh, 33-25. Defensively, VU's Gutierrez and Lehigh's Matthew Poillon each posted 12 stops for the day while sophomore LSM John LoCascio (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex Regional) picked up four ground balls to lead the Villanova effort.
