LSU Soccer Complex (1,500) LSU RETURNS HOME TO FACE AUBURN IN SEC WEST SHOWDOWN After playing its last five matches on the road, the LSU soccer team welcomes a return to the friendly confines of the LSU Soccer Complex as it plays host to a pair of SEC Western Division rivals this weekend with matches scheduled against Auburn on Friday night and Alabama on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers, who have not played a home match since picking up a 7-0 win over Centenary on Sept. 14, are riding a school record 14-game home unbeaten streak into Friday s match against Auburn. In fact, it was Auburn who last defeated LSU in Baton Rouge as it escaped with a 2-1 win back on Oct. 13, 2006. LSU ended a two-game losing skid in conference play on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Georgia, marking the first time in program history that the Tigers have won at the Turner Soccer Complex in Athens in five matches all-time. Auburn also enters Friday s action following a big win in SEC play as it crushed the Mississippi State Bulldogs by the score of 6-0 on Sunday afternoon. LSU and Auburn played to a 2-2 draw in the first round of the SEC Tournament a year ago, but it was LSU that advanced to the semifinals with a 4-2 win in penalty kicks. LSU : The Facts The Series LSU is looking to change its fortune against Auburn as the club enters the match with a 4-10-1 record in the all-time series. But the Tigers drew Auburn in the first round of the SEC Tournament last year and advanced to the semifinal on penalty kicks, 4-2. Rutledge followed that performance by tying the school s single-game record with three assists in a 4-1 win over Mississippi State on Sept. 26, while she added another against the Tennessee Lady Volunteers this past weekend to sit at 27 for her career. She has 11 assists in 10 matches this fall to rank No. 1 in the country with an average of 1.10 assists per game. Georgia Natives Lead Tigers to First Ever Win in Athens With the 15th-ranked LSU soccer team looking to snap a two-game losing streak in SEC play, it was only fitting for a trio of Georgia natives to lead the Tigers to a 2-1 win over the Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at the Turner Soccer Complex. Junior Melissa Clarke of Norcross and junior Malorie Rutledge of Sharpsburg each scored a goal on the afternoon, while freshman Mo Isom of Marietta was steady in goal once again while making a career high seven saves to lead LSU to its second win in the SEC. For the Tigers, it was their first ever win over Georgia in Athens in five matches all-time at the Turner Soccer Complex. Tigers Feel Right at Home at LSU Soccer Complex The atmosphere in Tiger Stadium is world-renown for its ability to intimidate opposing teams and give the national champion LSU football team all the motivation it needs to pull out a victory on Saturday nights during the college football season. Just a short drive down Skip Bertman Drive, the LSU Soccer Complex is creating a mistique all its own as one of the toughest places to play in the Southeastern Conference as these Tiger footballers have grown accustomed to winning on their home turf. In fact, the Tigers are in the midst of a school record 14-game home unbeaten streak dating back to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of division rival Auburn on Oct. 13, 2006. LSU is 10-0-4 during that span with an impressive 2-0-3 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. Tigers Earn Program s First Ever Top-10 Ranking Excitement is at an all-time high for members of the LSU soccer program as the team catapulted itself into the Top 10 of the national rankings for the first time two weeks ago. The Tigers earned a No. 9 ranking in the Soccer America Top 25 on Sept. 22 after wrapping up their non-conference schedule with a dominating 4-0 win over Oklahoma on Sept. 19. They are currently No. 19 in the Soccer America poll released this week, earning a national ranking for a school record sixth straight week. Not only that, but the team remains at No. 20 in the latest Soccer Times Top 25 and No. 21 in the Soccer Buzz Top 30. Tigers Record Fastest Start in Program History With a 4-0 win on the road at Oklahoma in their non-conference finale two weeks ago, the Tigers set a new school record with their sixth straight win to start the season, which breaks the previous record of five consecutive victories to open the 2003 and 2007 seasons. The team extended its winning streak to seven games to open the season after defeating Mississippi State, 4-1, in its conference opener last Friday night before dropping its first decision of the 2008 season with a 1-0 loss to Ole Miss on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers longest unbeaten streak to open a season is eight games, which it set during the 2007 season while opening with a 6-0-2 mark. Isom Nabs Two SEC Player of the Week Honors For the second time this season, freshman goalkeeper Mo Isom was named the SEC Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week in the same week with her performance in LSU s 4-0 shutout of Oklahoma in its non-conference finale. It was her fourth shutout this season as she improved her record to 6-0 while dropping her goals against average to a paltry 0.33, which led all goalkeepers in the Southeastern Conference at the time. She also earned both awards back on Sept. 2. LSU Sports Information Phone - 225.578.8226 PO Box 25095, Baton Rouge, LA 70894 Fax - 225.578.1861

#19 LSU vs. Auburn Makasini Continues Her Assault on LSU s Scoring Records Junior All-American Michelle Makasini has been a scoring machine for the Tigers since she joined the program in 2006 as she currently ranks in the top five all-time at LSU in seven different offensive categories. Makasini is now No. 3 in points with 62 and No. 4 in goals scored with 25, while she also ranks No. 7 in assists with 12 for her career. Not only that, but she is currently No. 2 in game-winning goals for a career wtih nine and is No. 2 all-time in total shots attempted (179), shots on goal (85) and shots per game (3.51). If she continues at this pace, Makasini will wrap up her collegiate career after the 2009 season as the most prolific scorer in the history of LSU soccer program and truly one of the all-time greats to wear the purple and gold. Tigers Feature Diverse Offensive Attack LSU has become well-known for playing a flowing, attacking brand of soccer in the SEC under head coach Brian Lee, and this season has been no different as the Tigers have outscored their opponents by a 28-7 margin in 10 matches. And what might be even more impressive is the diversity that LSU has shown on the offensive end with 10 different players having scored at least one goal this season. That number ranks second in the SEC behind only Mississippi State as a total of 13 Bulldogs have scored at least one goal in 2008. The Tigers are also the only team in the SEC with two players with 15 or more points on the season as junior Malorie Rutledge is tied for the league lead with 17 points and fellow junior Rachel Yepez is tied for fourth with 15 points. Hurricanes Shake Up Soccer Schedule in 2008 LSU has seen quite a shake up to its schedule this fall as four matches were canceled in early September due to the impact of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike on the Gulf Coast. After racing out to a 4-0 start following their match with Loyola-Chicago in the Windy City on Sept. 1, the Tigers would not step onto the pitch for 13 days in the aftermath of the two storms. The club was set to host Kent State on Sept. 5 and Dartmouth on Sept. 7 in the Tiger Classic, but those matches were canceled when Hurricane Gustav made landfall earlier in the week. Hurricane Ike then forced the cancellation of matches against UL-Lafayette on Sept. 12 and Houston on Sept. 14. Isom Named Soccer America National Player of the Week LSU s freshman goalkeeper Mo Isom has certainly made a splash early in her collegiate career, and she was recognized by Soccer America earlier this season by being named the publication s National Player of the Week on Sept. 2. Isom is the second Tiger to earn National Player of the Week honors from Soccer America as she joins junior Michelle Makasini who received the honor on Oct. 9, 2007. After leading LSU to a 4-1 victory over then 18th-ranked BYU on Aug. 25 while becoming the first LSU goalkeeper to score a goal in the match, Isom earned Most Valuable Player honors at the inaugural Lakeside Invitational on Sept. 1. Isom s goal was unlike anything ever seen at the LSU Soccer Complex as she lined up to take a routine free kick in the second half and sent a 90-yard rocket over the BYU defense, over the keeper s head and into the back of the net. LSU Soccer Makes Debut on ESPN s SportsCenter Not only was Mo Isom recognized by the soccer community for her performance in LSU s 4-1 win over BYU on Sept. 25, but she also received worldwide attention as her goal on a 90-yard free kick in the 53rd minute was broadcast into homes across the globe as part of the Top 10 Plays segment of ESPN s SportsCenter the following evening. Isom s electrifying goal cracked the top-five plays of the day at No. 3 on the countdown originally shown during the midnight broadcast. Isom Also Featured in Sports Illustrated s Faces in the Crowd If making into the Top 10 Plays segment of SportsCenter were not enough, Mo Isom also became the first LSU soccer player to be featured in Sports Illustrated as her goal on a 90-yard free kick against BYU landed her a spot in the Faces in the Crowd section of the Sept. 15 issue of the publication. Each week, Sports Illustrated features six high school and college athletes from across the country who boast extraordinary accomplishments in their respective sports. LSU received a total of seven first-place votes and 62 points to repeat as SEC West champions to finish just ahead of the five first-place votes and 59 points awarded to Auburn. Ole Miss was third in the division with 45 points to mirror the top three finishers from 2007. the Florida Gators have been tabbed as the favorite to win their third straight SEC championship in 2008 as they received a total of seven first-place votes in the overall standings. Tennessee received three votes, while Georgia received two first-place votes. Rutledge Named to Hermann Trophy Watch List Before the start of each season, the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis releases its list of the top college soccer players from across the country expected to compete for the right to raise the Hermann Trophy as the National Player of the Year at the end of the season. LSU junior All- American Malorie Rutledge is one of 47 student-athletes nationwide to be named to the organization s prestigious watch list for the 2008 season. Rutledge, a native of Sharpsburg, Ga., has already been tabbed a preseason favorite to earn first-team all-conference honors for the second straight season as the league s 12 head coaches announced their preseason All-SEC squad back on Aug. 13. The Hermann Trophy is college soccer s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy awarded to the nation s top college football player each year. Crawford, Jones Elected Team Captains for 2008 Season Leadership is a key component of any championship program, and seniors Casey Crawford and Roslyn Jones have accepted that role this season as they were elected captains of the LSU soccer team in a vote of their teammates during the preseason. This marks the second straight season that Crawford will serve as a team captain after leading the Tigers to an SEC Western Division championship and NCAA Tournament berth a year ago. Jones has quickly developed into one of the more feared strikers in the Southeastern Conference as the former Second-Team All-SEC selection returns after scoring seven goals and 21 points last season. Like Crawford, she has also demonstrated the ability to be a leader both on and off the field as a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and academic all-district selection by ESPN. Tigers Advance to Second Round of NCAA Tournament Prior to the 2007 season, no LSU soccer player had ever experienced the feeling of standing toeto-toe against the nation's best teams in the NCAA Tournament. But the Tigers made the most of their very first opportunity in 13 seasons by advancing to the second round where they fell to NCAA runner-up Florida State in regional play in Tallahassee, Fla. However, LSU did pick up its first ever postseason victory by defeating the Samford Bulldogs in double overtime in their first-round matchup on Nov. 16. Then junior Roslyn Jones punched a header into the back of the net with just 3 minutes, 26 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give the Tigers a 1-0 victory. LSU wrapped up their best season in program history with a 12-5-7 overall record. Yepez s OT Goal Clinches LSU s First SEC West Title In what might be the most historic victory in the 13-year history of the LSU soccer program, striker Rachel Yepez netted the game-winning goal in the seventh minute of overtime to give the Tigers a 1-0 victory over Arkansas at Lady 'Back Field on Nov. 2, 2007, and clinch LSU's first ever SEC Western Division championship. LSU entered the final day of the SEC season with a slim one-point advantage over Auburn in the league table in the race to be crowned division champion. A draw with the Lady Razorbacks would not have been enough as Auburn defeated Alabama in its season finale. But the Tigers prevailed and finished the season with a 5-2-4 mark and 19 points in conference play, while Auburn was a close second in the division with a 6-5 record and 18 points.
