COLORADO BUFFALO FOOTBALL / POSTGAME QUOTES Page 1 Colorado Head Coach Jon Embree General First off, Justin Solis will be ok. He had movement and all that. We took him to the hospital more as a precautionary, so as we learn more on that, probably later on this evening, I m sure (Associate A.D./Sports Information Director) Dave (Plati) and (Associate Sports Information Director) Curtis (Snyder) will get something out. As far as the game, hats off to Stanford they got after us with their defense and offensively they made plays when they needed to. We were expecting a lot of run, I thought early on our defense gave us a chance but offensively we didn t get first downs to stay on the field. Their offense will wear you down and that s what happened, hence the results. On Choosing QB Jordan Webb As Starter He was the better guy, clearly, during practice last week. But I will talk more about the whole (quarterback) situation on Tuesday (after practice), I just don t think that is fair to the kids, all three of them, because they all prepare hard and they all put in effort. On Offensive Issues Protection; and it was a perfect storm, when we had people open we had protection issues and when we did have protection, we couldn t get people open. It was one of those things, but protection was a problem today. You know, there is a reason why they are No. 2 in the country against the run and why they are what they are as a defense. They are a very good defense and they showed it today. On Game Plan We tried to run outside, we tried to run inside. You can have a game plan but when you re second and long you have to do things differently. So, we wanted to move them around, move the pocket, some quick passing plays to try and loosen them up some and keep them from loading the box. Whatever the reason or the issues are, when you are 2nd and 10 or longer you can t just say you are going to stick to doing this or that, so you have to try and do some things to get back ahead of the chains. On Run Defensive Our guys were doing well against (the run) early. Then, they ran the trick play reverse that got them essentially a touchdown. (Stanford TE, Levine Toilolo) made a nice play, (Paul) Vigo was all over him, but he made a good play to set up another touchdown. They just kept pounding it and wearing you down. I thought our defense was against the run, even money I guess, I thought they did pretty well considering what the other side was capable of. On Offensive Struggles Due Towards Execution or Scheme It s a combination, we are trying and it s hard during the season to do more spread stuff to help us from a scheme standpoint. That is part of it at times. The first two weeks we moved it ok, doing (the spread), and then this week obviously we didn t move the ball well as far as running the ball, so it s a combination. And I ve said this before, but I m taking a real hard look on what we do on both sides of the ball, and make sure that we give our kids the opportunity to be successful. On Grade He Gives Coaching Staff Not good, I don t know about a letter grade, but I m not going to sit here and blame people. We all have to be better. On Staff Having To Learn On The Job I think some of that stuff is overrated, I really do, because there are things that when you talk about being a head coach. Is it game management issues? Is it clock issues? Is it those things and I ve felt like we have been pretty good at that. We just haven t been able to compete like we need to, and that is something that we need to be better at. On First Home Shut Out Since 1986 Wow let me guess, Oklahoma. (The streak) does mean a lot, but there are other things besides that, that I want to get fixed more, and that is a byproduct of some things that need to be fixed. On Improvements Team Has Made I think offensive line, the last few weeks, has been playing better but obviously we missed Gus (Handler) he wasn t out there today. Nick Kasa has been a pleasant surprise offensively. Our tight end position is starting to come back in this offense which is critical for us I think as we move forward. Defensively, we need to be consistent. We kind of shored up some things tackling and then it showed up again today. We do live tackling in practice, and we lost (Jon) Major in practice live tackling, I think he will be back next week, but that is a byproduct, and I think there is a fine line there of how much you can do with guys (in practice). Greg Henderson got dinged a little bit doing some tackling, so those are some things through spring and (fall) camp that will continue to be emphasized from a fundamental standpoint that we will improve on. On What He Expects From Fans Well they should come out just like they did today, because we have some recruits here and that makes an impression on them, and we will be better. We re not even through the second year, and as I told the team, things will be better. On Measuring Fight Of Team Well, I measure it the same way; when I turn on the tape, are you playing with effort? Are you getting beat because it s physical, or are you getting beat because it s lack of effort, or are you getting beat because you are not doing some things that you are coached to do, or are we getting beat because they are not coached in the right way? Those are the things that I look at, because as a coach the tape doesn t lie, so what do you see when you look at the tape from those standpoints, from effort or some fundamental things. Those are the things I look at, and if guys aren t doing that then you know.

COLORADO BUFFALO FOOTBALL / POSTGAME QUOTES Page 2 Stanford Head Coach David Shaw On Playing Kevin Hogan We knew we were going to give Josh (Nunes) the first two series and give Kevin the next series. Kevin took the ball and ran with it and did a heck of a job. On The Defense We had to prove that we could finish, we know we have a great defense. We needed to prove that we could play 60 minutes. No matter who we put in there we have two groups of guys who can play at a high level for us. We didn t want any let up, they drove down the field at the end and we were able push them back again. Our guys played extremely well, it was a great game plan and the guys played it to perfection. On Kevin Hogan s Performance He s been showing it to us in practice he s been doing extremely well. Early in the year he didn t have the entire offense, it was tough for him to get into the competition. But as time has gone he s gotten more comfortable. The biggest thing is protection, on third down changing protections, audibles, kills and all those things. The last three weeks he s gotten that and that s why he s been playing more and more and starting last game he really looked like he had it all under control and we knew we were going to give Josh (Nunes) the first two series and then give Kevin a chance and he did great. On The Potential Of Kevin Hogan Starting You ll see a whole lot of Kevin Hogan. On What Kevin Hogan Adds To The Offense Well you see the mobility; I mean it s not just scrambling for a couple yards. He is fast, he can run, he s athletic, he can throw on the move to the left or to the right. You saw him push up in the pocket and find his check downs and I can t find a lot of negatives on what he did today. I m very impressed with him we will look really hard and we ll find a couple negatives but I feel really good about what he did today. On Kevin s Ability To Scramble He presents issues, a scrambling quarterback, a running quarterback, I always say this: the best runs for quarterbacks are passes. The defense rolled their coverage and he was able to run and there were a lot of running lanes on the outside. On Ed Reynolds Pick Six I started saying PAT. The thing with Ed (Reynolds) and my dad calls it stealing second, where you read a quarterback like you read a pitcher and once he starts his throwing motion Ed does such a great job of accelerating to the interception point and keeping his speed and finishing in the end zone. On How Much He Can Take Away From The Game A lot. It s still about us, it s about execution, it s about guys doing their jobs so that s what we always look at regardless of who we play or where we play that s our biggest thing, we executed very well today. On Josh Nunes I think he played ok, there are things he could have done better. On The Penalties I ll tell you what they have a huge tight end, and we had put Ronnie Harris in, and Ronnie s about 5 9 and the tight end is 6 6, so the guy came off the line and Ronnie (Harris) grabbed him and he did the same thing on the punt. We just have to be better with our hands. On Shutting Out Colorado It s great for us irrespective of who it is that we can finish a game, it s one thing to go out and win a game which is great but once a game is in hand we want to finish it. Even when we put our backups in their job is to finish the game and they did that.

COLORADO BUFFALO FOOTBALL / POSTGAME QUOTES Page 3-A Colorado Players QB Connor Wood ON PLAYING It boosted my confidence for sure. I felt good out there despite the situation of the game and the scoreboard but I am my own worst critic sometimes and I need to get better at, for instance that delay of game penalty and I threw one over (Nick) Kasa s head so I want to get better at those. But I definitely want to be positive about how well I played today. ON FUMBLE It was a play action play and I dropped back and got rushed from the right side so I was trying to escape and he got a hand on it. So what I need to do is put two hands to the ball. If I m scrambling, I need to put two hands to the ball. So that is one thing I need to take in for next week and learn and get better at. ON OFFENSE S STRUGGLE You really can t put a finger on one player, one position. It seemed like when 10 guys were doing the right thing, one guy wasn t. That is what I saw the theme today so we just need to get better at executing. I think our game plan was great but execution is what we need to work on. ON FIRST SHUTOUT SINCE 1986 I did not know that. After the quarterbacks got together after the game and one thing we have to do next week as leaders of the team is come out and have that energy and be enthusiastic and not hang our heads. No matter what the record is, we can t let that affect us, especially our position. TE VINCENT HOBBS ON MOVING FORWARD AFTER LOSS We have to do what we do every week. Obviously the weeks haven t been going how we want them to be. We just have to work harder at practice. It all starts at practice Monday thru Friday and if you do good at that week in practice, than you re going to do good in the game. ON OFFENSIVE STRUGGLE Communication (was the problem). It all starts with communication and receiver wise, we were off at times. QB NICK HIRSCHMAN ON OFFENSIVE STRUGGLE They are a real great defense to start off with. There front seven is better than anyone I have personally played before. A lot of that responsibility falls on the quarterback and all three of us need to be better for our team to move on. ON QUARTERBACK COMPETITION I try to go in every week looking for a chance to start. It makes you better when you are out there working. That decision is up to the coaches and the best guy is going to play. RB CHRISTIAN POWELL ON RUNNING GAME STRUGGLES They are just a good team against the run and on offense and they were just finding the holes and playing the gaps well. They just did a good job. ON STANFORD S DEFENSE STOPPING THE RUN We were not executing. We could not get anything going. I felt like it was just us. When we needed to get stuff going we were just not able to. ON STANFORD S DEFENSE IN GENERAL They are pretty good. They did a great job today against us. They were physical; they were strong at the point and playing the gaps well. ON OFFENSE S ABILITY TO EXECUTE We just need to catch balls and make plays and make the right reads from everybody on the offense. ON GUS HANDLER S ABSENCE He is a good part, a good factor but there is a lot of guys who have been doing this. Daniel (Munyer) went in and did pretty good. ON NOT EXECUTING It is very disappointing. We had a good week of practice and today it just got shut down. We just need to pick that up.

COLORADO BUFFALO FOOTBALL / POSTGAME QUOTES Page 3-B Colorado Players (Cont.) TE Nick Kasa ON THE OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES I really think it has to do with shooting ourselves in the foot a lot. Give a lot of credit to Stanford too; they have a very stout defense. They brought a lot more pressure than we thought they were going to, but it wasn t something we were not prepared for. We have prepared for their pressure all week. It was just a lot of not getting into a rhythm. We were not making a lot of plays that we know we can make. ON HOW HIS INJURY FEELS It is fine. I will be alright. I will be playing next week. ON HOW HE FELT THE OFFENSE PERFORMED I will have to watch the tape. I think it was just guys getting into their heads too much. We need everybody to do their job for a play to work and today it was just a little too much frantic stuff going on with our offense. We all need to get together collectively and watch more tape together, prepare, and do the things we know we can do. ON THE OFFENSIVE IMPROVEMENT FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR Well we have run the ball when have needed to run the ball, today was an exception to that. If we can keep moving forward with that we can get better passing opportunities. ON THE LEADERSHIP FROM THE QUARTERBACKS I don t think we are trying to think about that too much. That is the coaches deal I guess. It could have something to do with us not getting into rhythm. I think we all need to collectively do our jobs and like I said, make the plays we know we can make. ON IF THERE ARE BETTER RESULTS IN THE FUTURE GAMES AND SEASONS I am not trying to think about it right now but I think we are all on the same page. We are not down on ourselves, we just know we need to keep moving forward and try to get these fans some wins in the final games coming up. ON HOW HARD IT IS TO BE A RECIEVER WITH INCONSISTANCY FROM THE QUARTERBACKS I work with all of them but it is a little tough to not have one consistent guy out there. It is really just about making plays when they throw the ball up and to go get it no matter who threw it. MLB Brady Daigh ON HOW IT FELT TO BE PLAYING AGAIN It felt good to be back out there. It was my kind of game going against a two back offense that likes to run down hill. It felt good to be out there. I felt 100 percent. ON JUSTIN SOLIS INJURY As far as Justin, he was kind of in the same position I was in. It was more of a precautionary thing. I think he will be alright, it was good to hear. ON HOW THE DEFENSE PLAYED I think we came out very strong early. It is a very physical team; they like to wear you down. That is their game plan and that is what they like to do. We have to be better at battling through all that adversity and we have got to keep coming for four quarters, not just the first quarter. ON KEVIN HOGAN COMING IN FOR JOSH NUNES AT QUARTERBACK FOR STANFORD He brings a different kind of game to it. He is a very fast runner; he allows them to spread out their offense. We game planned for him throughout the week but we were not expecting him to take as many snaps as he did. It was just a different look. ON THE DIFFICULTY FOR THE DEFENSE TO BE ON THE FIELD FOR LONG STRETCHES It s something you have to prepare for as a defense. You need to expect that something like that is going to happen. You still need to go out there and shut down their offense and get yourself off the field. It was tough though. I was feeling a little tired out there and was missing a lot of tackles. That is something I need to improve on as well. ON THE STRIDES THE DEFENSE HAS MADE THIS SEASON I think we did a very good job against the run. I don t know the stats but for the most part we shut down the run. I don t know how many third down conversions they had but that is something that we can get better at and something we need to improve on. From the first game of the season we have definitely improved up front especially with all the young guys up there. ON IF THERE ARE BETTER RESULTS IN THE FUTURE GAMES AND SEASONS That is why I committed here and why I wanted to stay in state was to help turn this program back. I grew up watching this team and there are a lot of young guys in here, at least defensively that are just stepping off of a high school field. I think once we adjust and everyone gets used to the college pace, even though it is tough for the fans to sit through it, the Buffs will be back. ON HOW DISCOURAGING IT IS TO SUFFER LOPSIDED LOSSES No football player wants to go out there and give up that many points. We want to pitch a shutout every game. It s discouraging but at the same time we are going to come back every week.

COLORADO BUFFALO FOOTBALL / POSTGAME QUOTES Page 4 Stanford Players QB Kevin Hogan ON HIS SURPRISE PLAYING TIME I was preparing myself to play as much as they needed me; getting ready, staying warm so that s what I did. ON HIS PERFORMANCE TODAY That run felt very good. Also getting hit for the first time and popping up; that felt good. It just brings me back to the point that it s just football. It felt good to get comfortable that way. ON WHETHER HE DESERVES TO START Whatever the coaches think. It was a good team win. Whatever they choose, I m happy with. ON HIS PASSES TO TOILOLO AND PATTERSON Yeah, Levine (Toilolo) made a great catch. I just saw him one onone. I threw it up to him. He s six eight. He made a great catch and got the first down. They rolled their coverage and [Patterson] ran a deep slant. He went up for the ball and grabbed it with his big body and made a great catch for a key first down. He was able to set up for a touchdown at the end of the half. ON THE THROWING TOUCHDOWN ON THE 1 YARD LINE Whatever gets this touchdown, it works. [Zach Ertz] made it easy. He s been working hard all week preparing for the game. In case he got the chance, he just made great plays. Not all my balls were perfect, but they made great catches. The line did a great job protecting and they made it a lot easier. ON HIS MISTAKES There s a couple things here and there that I have to work on. I m going to get in the film room and get more comfortable. It ll get better. FS Ed Reynolds ON HIS PICK SIX They just made a call where I was the free guy and it was triple coverage. Just from film, you could tell what kind of combinations they ran and I just read the quarterback s eyes. Once again, it was the front getting pressure and me being able to capitalize on the opportunity. I wouldn t say it was completely clear but as long as I m doing my job and reading the quarterback s eyes, and breaking when I need to break. As long as I m doing my job, the ball s going to hit you right straight in the face and that s exactly what I did that time. I capitalized and took it straight to the house. And with the help from Chase Thomas block on the quarterback. ON THE GAME TODAY We don t ever expect easy games. Every team is going to give it their all against us. Week in, week out, we can expect the Pac 12 to be a competitive conference. On both sides of the ball, we just came out and did exactly what we wanted to, which was to dominate from the beginning. We took care of business early. And towards the end, we rotated in some guys. ON THE DEFENSE As a defense, our goal is to get a goose egg. It was a blessing today that we were able to execute. It was exactly how we wanted; we didn t give up any big plays. We swarmed the ball and took away the run game real early. We focused in on who we knew the big targets were and it was mainly the tight end. It s just guys doing their jobs. It s exactly what we have to do. Everyone just has to do their assignment. As 11 guys out there, we just have to do our thing and we feel like no one can really do anything on us. TE Zach Ertz ON HOW THE OFFENSE PLAYED WITH HOGAN One of the biggest things was the scramble on 3 rd and 14. He scrambled for 20 yards. That was great to see for the offense to add that extra dimension and we look forward to that. ON HOGAN S COMPOSURE He was very poised I d say; which is very good for him being very young. I think we have a lot of leaders on the offense. Our two captains, they set the tone for us. ON WHETHER HE DESERVES TO START Like what Kevin [Hogan] said, it s whatever the coaches want to do. Obviously he played great. I think four incompletions for the entire game, that speaks for itself. ON HIS TOUCHDOWN CATCH They only had one guy on me and Levine then Kevin on the rollout. I was wide open and he made a great throw. ON WHAT STANFORD CAN LEARN FROM TODAY I wouldn t say too much. It s one game. If we don t play well next week, it doesn t mean anything. It s one game at a time, that s the way we re looking at it.
