Chanticleers Versus CAA Opponents The Chanticleers are 18-61 all-time against current members of the Colonial Athletic Association with 13 of those wins coming against College of Charleston. The Chants are 13-32 all-time against College of Charleston, 0-1 against James Madison, 2-4 against Towson, 3-23 against UNC Wilmington, and 0-1 against William & Mary. CCU s current senior class of Angelica Henry, Alexx Puckett, Katelyn Connor and Kayla Cook are 2-2 against current CAA member institution in their careers. The class is 2-1 against College of Charleston and 0-1 against UNC Wilmington. JAIDA WILLIAMS HEAD COACH FIRST SEASON AT COASTAL CAROLINA I ll Take Jordan for 23 (Or At Least 20) Junior AJ Jordan is in the midst of a truly breakout season. After averaging a modest 9.6 points per outing as a sophomore, Jordan has nearly doubled that output to 18.0 per game this season. She has broken the 20 point barrier in five of Coastal s nine games, including a trio of 23-point efforts. Jordan has already reset her career-high, which now stands at 25, twice this season. She is on pace to be the first Chanticleer to average more than 16.0 points per game since Alisha Dill averaged 22.5 during the 2006-07 campaign. Sims Breakout Performance Freshman Karsen Sims turned in a breakout performance in Coastal s 79-72 setback against Furman on Dec. 15. Sims, who earned her second straight starting nod, finished the contest with a career-high 17 points on 6-of-11 from the field and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Of her six baskets, two came from long range. Sims was thrust into the point guard role for much of the first half after starting point guard Angelica Henry suffered early foul trouble. Sims played admirably at the point, helping Coastal battle back from a 13-point deficit. The Gatlinburg, Tenn., native also equaled her career-best with five rebounds to go along with a pair of steals. Court Vision and Quick Hands Senior point guard Angelica Henry has done all that is necessary from a point guard on a high-octane offense. Henry, who was known for her defensive pressure last season, has added superior court vision to her game as a senior. Henry averages 5.0 helpers per contest through nine games and has led Coastal in the assists category each time on the floor. She ranks third in the Big South in assists per game, while also disrupting opposing teams offenses to the tune of 2.22 steals per outing. The Indianapolis, Ind., native is the only player in the Big South Conference to rank in the top three in assists, steals and assist/turnover ratio. Puckett Buckets Alexx Puckett has taken her game to new heights in 2013. The senior starter is averaging a career-best 11.9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Puckett has scored in double-figures five times this season after reaching the 10-point plateau just 10 times in 29 games a season ago. She scored a career-high 24 points in Coastal s win over Gardner-Webb on Dec. 5 and corralled 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Puckett has missed two additional double-doubles this season by a single rebound. Puckett Named Big South Player of the Week Alexx Puckett was named the Big South Conference Women s Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week for games played Dec. 2-8. Puckett put in 24 points, shot 73 percent from the floor and ripped down 11 rebounds to lead the Chanticleers to an 85-63 win over Gardner-Webb on Dec. 5. The double-double was the first of her career and the third by a Chanticleer this season. She connected on 8-of-11 from the floor, added six from the line and two from long range. The forward also dished out three assists and came away with three steals and a block. WHAT IS A CHANTICLEER? The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time. Williams is the sixth head coach in the 40-year history of Coastal Carolina women's basketball. Largest Big South Win Since 2007 Coastal s 22-point (85-63) victory over Gardner-Webb on Dec. 5 was the Chanticleers largest margin of victory in conference play since the 2006-07 team claimed a 24-point win against Charleston Southern by a 61-37 count on Jan. 27, 2007. The Chants 85 points against the Runnin Bulldogs marked the program s most against a Big South opponent since scoring 96 in a 96-94 win at Radford on Jan. 2, 2003. Winning the Battle on the Boards The Chanticleers have won the rebounding battle in seven of their nine games. Coastal is averaging 47.4 boards per game this season, while only allowing its opponents to collect 39.7 per outing. CCU s +7.8 rebounding margin ranks first in the Big South and 44th-best in the NCAA. Coastal collected a season-high 55 rebounds in its win over Brevard and has recorded 50-plus rebounds five times. It Takes a Team The 2013-14 edition of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers is a relatively balanced attack. Head coach Jaida Williams has used all 10 available players so far this season and eight of the 10 are averaging 10.0 minutes or more of action. Williams has also used seven different lineups in the Chanticleers first nine games with the lone constant being junior shooting guard AJ Jordan. Road Warriors Of Coastal s eight games this season, four have been away from the friendly confines of The HTC Center. Coastal Carolina had its longest road trip of the 2013-14 season, and second longest in program history on Nov. 27-Dec. 1. The Chanticleers traveled west to Seattle, Wash., to compete in the Seattle University-hosted Delta Dental Thanksgiving Tournament where they played Seattle U and Drake. The Chants left campus on Wednesday, Nov. 27 and returned Sunday, Dec. 1. The longest road trip in program history occurred during the 2009-10 season when th Chanticleers participated in the Great Alaskan Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska. From Downtown The 2013-14 Chanticleers are off to a fast start from beyond the arc this season. Coastal is averaging 5.0 triples per game this season after averaging a meager 2.9 per outing last season. The Chants have made 34.5 percent of their 3-point attempts this season compared to only 24.4 percent a year ago. Angelica Henry leads both Coastal Carolina and the Big South in 3-point percentage with an impressive 45.5 clip. Alexx Puckett ranks second on the team and eighth in the league with a 44.4 percentage. Scoring In Bunches Coastal Carolina is scoring in mass amounts this season, breaking the 70-point barrier in five of its first eight games. The Chants averaged 59.2 points per game last season, but with the installment of head coach Jadia Williams up-tempo offense, Coastal is averaging a Big South-best 76.4 points per outing this season. Coastal s season-low output was a 52-point effort at No. 12/12 North Carolina. AJ Jordan s 17.4 scoring average leads three Chants averaging 10-plus points per game. Joining Jordan with double-digit averages are Angelica Henry (12.8) and Alexx Puckett (12.8). Coastal owns a 41.5 percent shooting clip from the floor and a 34.5 percent accuracy rating from beyond the arc.
