PIPERS and PIPE BAND SOCIETY of ONTARIO, OTTAWA BRANCH **** www.ppbso-ottawa.org **** President: Graeme Ogilvie (613) 830-9160 (email: graeme.ogilvie@sympatico.ca) Vice-President: Charlie King (613) 830-7418 (email: charles.king@sympatico.ca) Vice-President: Bruce Hewat (613) 733-0552 (email: kilty_macbagpipe@hotmail.com) Treasurer: Jack Yourt (613) 774-3622 (email: jcyourt@hotmail.com) Secretary: Douglas Heyland (613) 821-2505 (email: keemik@ca.inter.net) Welcome to the start of the 2003/2004 PPBSO Ottawa Branch in-door season. From those of us on the executive, we hope that you've all had a very pleasant and enjoyable summer. Following the great season we had last year, we expect this new season to be just as exciting, a chance to showcase all of our local piping and drumming talents. OPENING KNOCK-OUT CONTESTS.. NOTE NEW STARTING TIME >>>> 7:30 PM!!!!!!! We will again be running the popular amateur knock-out contest this season. The year will start with our traditional 4/4 March contest for the pipers (four parts, one or two tunes) to determine the split for the A and B divisions, and a 6/8 March contest for the drummers (four parts, one or two tunes). For the drummers, no excuses that you can t find a piper. We will have a duty piper on hand, just make sure you bring a copy of the pipe setting that you re playing to!! Hopefully we ll have enough drummers participate this year to again have A and B divisions in the drumming knock-out. Knock-Out Contest Date Saturday 04 October 2003. Time 7:30 pm. To keep the evening from running too late, all competitors are asked to be registered by 7:15 pm. If you can t make it by 7:15, please contact any of the Ottawa Branch executive in advance to reserve a spot in the draw. Place the Walkey Road Armouries, 2100 Walkley Road, between St. Laurent Blvd and Conroy Ave (the Armouries are on the south side of Walkley Ave, right beside the Walkley Bowling Centre parking lot). *** NOTE: do not park in the reserved parking spots, the Armouries are a 24/7 facility ***. We look forward to another season of great piping and drumming at the knock-outs. See you there!! If anyone in the Ottawa Branch has motions to be made at the PPBSO Annual General Meeting on 22 November 2003, please make sure they are forwarded ASAP to anyone on the Ottawa Branch executive to ensure that they have time to be circulated and reviewed in time to be discussed at the 04 October 2003 meeting. Piobaireachd Society (Canada) Gold Medal Contest - Glengarry Highland Games, 2003 The judges for 2003 were Willie Connell for the Gold Medal & Former Winners Piobaireachd and Jake Watson for the March, Strathspey & Reel and the Former Winners MSR. This year s contest was perhaps the best since coming to Maxville. Eighteen players took part, with one having to cancel in advance due to family reasons. In the closing remarks, William Connell addressed the crowd, saying this year s contest was of the highest standard since coming to Maxville. This year s winner of the Gold Medal was Andrew Hayes of Ottawa. There was a good follow-up in The Ottawa Citizen regarding his win. The Games got favourable mention, as did the Gold Medal Contest. All the contestants that I met on Saturday of the Games indicated they would return in 2004. All praised the contest for its venues and gave special regard to the stewards, commenting on how efficient they were. Chief Steward Douglas Heyland, in particular, did an outstanding job that day. The contest started at 8:00AM with an hour and a half off for lunch. Play was resumed at 1:20 pm, finishing at 6:00 pm. The churches were put back in order as found, with the doors closed at 6:30 pm. During the day as many as 65-70 people, players, and listeners attended the United Church contests. It is truly a great contest. Many of the players are Pipe Majors of the top bands that play Saturday in the Pipe Band contests eg. Roddy MacLean of the 78 th Citadel (runner-up) coming back next year with more solo players from his group. submitted by John C. The costs of the trip were offset by fundraising done by many members of the band, including busking, a Guinness World Record setting Longest Highland Fling, and an amazing show by Canada's own piping comedian, Johnny "Bagpipes" Johnston, honorary member of the Sons of Scotland. A lot of work was done by everyone, and they should all be proud of the band's achievements. We plan to make the trip over to Scotland an annual one. Sons of Scotland Pipe Band Summer Events 2003 The Sons of Scotland enjoyed a successful summer in terms of shows, fundraising, concerts, and contests. We travelled to Scotland this year to compete at the World Championships in Glasgow (below) and at the Crieff Highland Games. The band fared well in their division, taking a 13th at the Worlds', and a 7th at Crieff. In addition to these events, we also played a concert at the Gardens of Stirling Castle (left), played on the Royal Mile for the Busker Festival, and at one of Edinburgh's largest pubs, The Three Sisters. We were guests of the 1st Battalion The Highlanders, and held practices at their facility at Redford Barracks. While overseas,
