CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Indianapolis Chapter - American Singles Golf Association August 2009 Notes From The Pres Hello everyone, welcome to August! This month we re looking forward to renewing old friendships and meeting new friends from Cincinnati. We ve got two days of golf sandwiched around social activities in the I-74 Challenge, August 8-9. The Cincinnati ASGA Chapter will be traveling to Indianapolis to do battle on the links with the Indy Chapter. We re playing the Legends of Indiana Saturday afternoon on the Creek and Middle Courses. There will be a shotgun start at 1 pm, so everyone needs to be there by noon to check in, get your tee assignments and warm up for your head to head stroke play competition. We plan to have two players from each location in each foursome. After golf, we ll be going to Cheeseburger in Paradise for the awards ceremony, trophy presentation and cocktails. The Cincinnati people are making reservations to stay overnight at the Baymont Inn: 1281 South Park Drive, Greenwood, IN 46143. Indianapolis people should feel encouraged to stay there, as well. That way we ll be safe while driving from the restaurant to wherever, and also within convenient driving distance to Sunday golf at The Links Golf Course starting at 9:00 am. http://www.linksindy.com/find_the _links.html for directions. Several people from the Indianapolis Chapter are planning to attend the Amelia Island (Jacksonville) get together August 21-23. There is room for last minute attendees so come on down and enjoy the party! You should have all received a survey directing you to a website in helping us plan a fall golf outing in southern Indiana at the cusp of Sept/Oct. Thank you for participating, as we ll use your input to make the decisions on where and when we play and where we stay! We d like to thank all the members who have stepped forward and hosted golf events and socials this month, including Ken Ferguson, Peggy Burlison, Jim McCarthy and Jerry Beck; and socials hosted at the homes of Pat Truelove and Sharon Steigerwald. The Fort is one of the Premium courses we play and course was in fantastic condition. The weather almost cooperated. We had a small rain delay but all players were able to return to the course after just a few minutes. The funny part about this is we had a rain delay last year on the same course and some of us on the exact same hole. We had seasoned players such as Preston, Ken, Ripley and I alongside some newbies; John S, Lee and Donna just to mention a few. Lee and Ann are now members of ASGA. The fact we n recruited members after playing a course like the Fort proves we have all done well. The after golf social was at Taylors Pub II again this year where we enjoyed great food and service. ~Trish Rose, Golf Host Ed Mullins and Jim McCarthy Part of the group after golf at Taylor s Pub Eagle Creek Golf Outing- July 4/5 Due to the weather, rain, rain and more rain, the July 4 th outing turned into a two day event! Hey, you can t say us Indy folks are not creative! Assembled in the clubhouse at Eagle Creek on July 4 th watching the slow drizzle turn into a more pronounced rain the majority of the group opted to reschedule our golf outing for July 5 go directly to Sharon Steigerwald s house for food and drink. Sharon very graciously accepted the group as we arrived about 4 hours before she had expected! Sharon proved she really was the hostess with the Mostess as she stepped up her preparations and provided us with a veritable feast! Thanks again Sharon! Ken Ferguson and Ripley Ross at Eagle Creek. The whole gang after Eagle Creek at Rick s Boathouse Restaurant. Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. Simply click on the MY ACCOUNT link at the national website (SinglesGolf.com). You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!
Gray Eagle Scramble July 25 Another rainy day story with a happy ending! Thirty-two golfers signed up for the Scramble at Gray Eagle Golf Course but stormy weather cleared the deck to twenty. Then the clouds lifted and the sun came out, mild summer s day and all was well! Gray Eagle Golf Course was nice enough to donate 25 sleeves of golf balls to be given out as prizes! The after golf social was held at Rebecca Chase s home with food and drink for all. Lots of R & R after golf at Rebecca s home. Part of the Gray Eagle Outing Group (Lt to Rt) Anne Strantz, Diane Phillips, Donna Allen, Anne Leighton, Jeff Wagner, John Duguid, Maggie Quinn, and in front Jenny Wimsatt Really out and about is Louis Ventimiglia How many of us have thought about leaving our everyday world behind and setting out to see what else is out there? Well, Indianapolis has one member who is doing just that. On May 15, 2009 Louis received notice he would be laid off on July 14, 2009. And from that day forward he began preparing for his new life of traveling the land. Here is an excerpt from his first entry on his blog Travels of the Not So Common Man: Hello All, this is the beginning of what I hope to be a long journey to places yet unknown. Yes, I know that sounds grandiloquent but I really don't know where specifically I'll be traveling from week to week until it is planned. All I do know is I will be attempting to travel each of the 49 states in my Jeep. If anyone can find a road my Jeep can travel leading to Hawaii, I'll go there also. I've already lived in several states and visited several more but I won't let my past life deter me from visiting many of those states again for this time I have a purpose in mind; to visit two or more historical or adventurous places in each state. Following along and see how my travels go... This week Louis was skiing in the Andes at Bariloche, kind of extending the boundaries of the 49 mainland States but way to go Louis! You can follow Louis on his blog at http://travelsofthenotsocommonman.blog spot.com/ and watch for monthly updates as the Indianapolis ASGA club travels vicariously through Louis! Where we are going: August 8 & 9- I-74 Challenge with the Cincinnati Chapter- The Legends of Indiana Saturday and Timbergate Golf Course on Sunday. After golf happy hour/social/dinner/prize fund awards at Cheeseburger in Paradise. Directions will be available at the course. Overnight accommodations can be made at Baymont Inn in Greenwood, IN. Actual calls received at the public Golf Course in Amherst, Mass Caller: What are your green fees? Staff: $38 Caller: Does that include golf? Caller: Yes, I need to get some information from you. First, is this your correct phone number? Caller: Yes, we have a tee time for two weeks from Friday. What s the weather going to be like that day? Caller: yes, I had a tee time for this afternoon but I m running late? Can you still get me out early? Rules and More Rules Q. Larry playing partner, Scott, was on the green and bent down to move a loose impediment, in this case, a leaf. Unfortunately, in the process of removing the leaf, Scott inadvertently moved his ball. Larry said, Sorry partner, you moved your ball, you must replace it and that s going to cost you a stroke. Was Larry correct? What is the correct ruling? A. No, Larry is incorrect, honest error replace the ball, no penalty. B. Yes, Larry is correct, replace the ball and one stoke penalty. C. No, Larry is incorrect, replace the ball and two stoke penalty. And the answer is... Answer: A, While movement of a ball in most situations results in a one stroke penalty (USGA Rule 18-2a), on the putting green, if the ball is accidentally moved while removing a loose impediment, the ball must be replaced but there is no penalty provided the movement of the ball is attributable to the removal of the loose impediment (USGA Rule 23-1). CELEBRATING 16 YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION AUGUST 2009 The national office of the American Singles Golf Association (ASGA) has announced another great opportunity for singles to meet, greet, then battle it out on great golf courses. Venue: Myrtle Beach, USA. With somewhere between 80 and 100 golf courses in the area (depending on who you speak with), Myrtle Beach is simply the natural place to be when it comes to playing golf in the Fall. The weather is cool but not cold and the sandy soil is ideal for grass-growing conditions. All-in-all, mix the beautiful weather with the great golf and many friends from across the country, and you ve got the making for a great golf weekend. This year, the national office has signed an agreement with the Marriott Grande Dunes, located right on the beach in Myrtle Beach. It s a AAA Four-Diamond hotel and is ranked as one of the Top 500 resorts in the world by Travel+Leisure magazine. We ve lined-up s o m e g r e a t courses nearby and have arranged for 10am shotgun starts each morning, so you ll have plenty of time to complete your round before the sun goes down. Date: November 12-15. Cost: Only $399 if you have a roommate, play two rounds of golf (including cart with GPS & range balls), enjoy six food functions, one of which is the Saturday night dinner... filet mignon and salmon and Friday night s themed Cheeseburgers in Paradise, where the best dressed parrothead will get $100. So to get all the details on this fun-filled event, visit the website at SinglesGolf.com/BattleAtTheBeach or complete the registration form enclosed with your monthly newsletter. If you d like to register over the phone, call us at 704-889-4600. Scotland a Definite Since we did our survey last month, we ve spent a lot of time researching the kinds of things that will make our visit to Scotland a memorable one. We were all a little surprised to see the players at the Open Championship wearing long sleeves. This wasn t a fashion statement. It can get a little bit nippy in Scotland, even in the Summer. So if you play Scotland you ve got to understand Scotland. Expect the unexpected and the trip will be even more enjoyable! Please stay-tuned. We don t want to announce anything until it s on paper. For updates, continue to visit the Scotland website, SinglesGolf.com/Scotland New Year s Location To Be Announced Later this month, we ll announce the location for our New Year s event. We will post 2-3 options on a website and will send out a national survey for your input. Chicago Celebrates Tenth Anniversary Congratulations to our fine folks up in ChicagoLand for celebrating their tenth year as a chapter of the American Singles Golf Association! The leadership has done a great job over the years keeping the troops happy and we thank them for that. New Chapters / West Coast + East Coast It s been a busy spring and summer with the implementation of a new start-up section on the website. Persons interested in setting-up new ASGA chapters can find the process simplified by going to SinglesGolf.com/start. We d like to thank Connie Vickroy who has started the Bay Area (San Francisco) Chapter of ASGA and Hallie Currigan, for starting the Savannah Chapter. If you have friends, colleagues, relatives, etc. in a distant city and think they d be an ideal candidate for getting a new ASGA chapter started, please have them contact us. - - Tom Alsop, President / Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
