The coach needs six wins to reach 300 for his career, and will coach his 500th game with nine more. He also owns the most Atlantic 10 wins among active coaches, with 146. Freshman C.J. Aiken ranks second in the nation in blocked shots and leads the Atlantic 10 with 3.8 per game and 7.0 in conference games only. Leading scorer Carl Jones has scored double figures in 14 of 15 games this year, with five games of 20 plus points. Freshman Langston Galloway tops the Atlantic 10 in free throw percentage, hitting 93.8 percent. SJU is fielding its youngest team ever under Phil Martelli with two seniors, one junior, four sophomores and five freshmen. The starting lineup has included three freshmen, which is the most ever under Martelli. The Hawks are looking to avoid an 0 3 start in league play. That has not happened since 1997 98, which was Phil Martelli s third season. PHIL MARTELLI Head Coach Now in his 16th season as Saint Joseph s University head coach, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post season participant and a key player on the national scene, while earning his place among the top coaches in the school s storied history. The 2010 11 season marks his 26th year at SJU, including 10 years as an assistant coach. His career mark now stands at 294 197, while he ranks fifth in career winning percentage (.600) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season (30) in 2004, Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories six times in the previous 15 seasons. He is 146 95 in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A 10. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference, or regional honor, in six of his 15 seasons. Martelli faced a challenge in 2009 10 with a young and inexperienced squad that went 11 20, coming off a 2008 09 season that saw the Hawks go 17 15 for his ninth consecutive winning season. Among the highlights of 08 09 was Ahmad Nivins earning AP Honorable Mention All America honors and becoming the third Hawk in six years to garner the Atlantic 10 s Player of the Year Award. Nivins was also chosen by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2009 NBA Draft, becoming the third player coached by Martelli to be drafted. The 2007 08 Hawks reached the Atlantic 10 Championship game for the third time in four years and earned the program s 19th bid to the NCAA Tournament, and Martelli s fifth. The 11th seeded Hawks fell to sixth seeded Oklahoma in the NCAA First Round, while ending the year at 21 13. Martelli reached a significant milestone in 2006 07, when he surpassed Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay for second place on the school s all time list for wins (236), while guiding a young squad to 18 wins. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.653 postseason winning percentage (17 9) and has taken SJU to the postseason in seven of the last nine years, and nine times in his 14 seasons. Martelli turned in another top notch coaching performance in 2005 06, as the Hawks went from a 10 12 record to win eight consecutive games to reach the Atlantic 10 championship game for the second year in a row. In 2004 05, Martelli turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in 2003 04 when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA first round draft picks, the 2004 05 Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli guided SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish 24 12. Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14 2), won its fifth straight regular season title to tie the league record, earned the A 10 s top seed and reached the title game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. SJU made an exciting six game run in the NIT, falling on a last second shot in the championship game. In 2003 04, Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball. The Hawks went undefeated in the regular season, reached the pinnacle as the top ranked team in the nation and earned the school s first ever number one seed in the NCAA Tournament, while advancing to the Elite Eight. Jameer Nelson was the consensus National Player of the Year and with teammate Delonte West, were both first round selections in the NBA Draft. SJU opened the season ranked 12th in the polls and moved up throughout the year, taking the top spot on March 8, 2004, for the first time ever, while finishing fifth in the polls, for SJU s highest final ranking since 1966. Martelli joined with Nelson to sweep the national coach and player awards, marking one of the few times in history that the top player and coach were from the same school. In addition to the national awards, he was the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the third time and a repeat winner of the Big 5 Coach of the Year. Martelli s commitment to Saint Joseph s is equaled by the University s commitment to him. The coach agreed to a new contract prior to the 2003 04 season and then in September 2004, the University extended the coach s contract through the 2011 12 season. In October 2008, the commitment was taken a step further, when his contract was extended through 2015 16. He served as head coach of the 2005 USA Under 21 World Championship Team, which finished in fifth place finish at the FIBA U21 World Championships. A 1976 graduate of Widener, Martelli began his career on Hawk Hill with SJU's 1985 86 NCAA Tournament team. After 10 years as an assistant at Saint Joseph s, Martelli was named the 14th coach in school history on July 20, 1995, and just the third non alumnus to follow in the storied tradition of SJU coaches. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season (1995 96) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. He followed that in 1996 97 with the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles, along with a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School and had a stint as assistant coach at Widener, helping guide the Pioneers to the 1978 NCAA Division III Final Four. As a point guard at Widener, he was part of the NCAA Tournament teams in 1975 and 1976, and set the school's single season and career assist marks. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Robert Morris University, and Elizabeth is a 2009 graduate of Saint Joseph s. LAST TIME OUT: George Washington placed five players in double figurest to defeat Saint Joseph's, 78 71, at Hagan Arena. Carl Jones scored 23 points for the Hawks while freshman C.J. Aiken notched career highs of 15 points and nine blocked shots. Leading basically the entire game, GW held off a few Saint Joseph's comeback attempts in the second half. Trailing 40 31, SJU opened the second half with a 15 7 run, capped by a layup from Jones to pull the Hawks to within 50 46. GW continued to hold its lead even though Aiken connected on a three with 7:24 to cut the SJU deficit to 58 56. But GW answered right back with a three pointer and then a conventional three point play to give GW a 63 56 edge with 5:48 to play. The Hawks made one more run as Jones hit a pair of free throws and Galloway connected on a 3 pointer to close them to within 73 69. But only 32 seconds remained and GW would go on to convert 5 of 6 foul shots down the stretch to earn the victory. In the first half, the teams went back and fourth until GW broke a 15 15 tie with a 7 0 run. The Colonials shot a sizzling 6 for 11 from three point range, while SJU was just 2 for 9 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. Idris Hilliard had 10 points and Langston Galloway had 10 points and nine rebounds for Saint Joseph's which forced 14 GW turnovers but struggled from the foul line, making just 10 of 17. 1500 CLUB: With two more victories, Saint Joseph s will reach 1,500 wins in the program s history. The Hawks currently own a 1,498 996 record in 102 seasons. SJU will become one of 35 programs to reach the plateau, joining an impressive list. MARTELLI MILESTONES: Head coach Phil Martelli is closing in on a few milestones. Here s the numbers he needs to reach those marks: 300 career victories needs 6 150 Atlantic 10 victories needs 4 500 games coached needs 9 Martelli will join an exclusive group of head coaches in A 10 history that have recorded 300 wins John Chaney of had 516 while Gale Catlett of West Virginia notched 333 for West Virginia (1979 95). REJECTION NOTICE: Freshman C.J. Aiken continues to make his presence known in the middle with his talent for blocking shots. The freshman had a season high nine against GW, with seven in the first half alone, to go along with 15 points. Earlier this season he had six at Fairfield, which was the highest total for a Hawk since Ahmad Nivins had the same number at UMass on Jan. 9, 2008. Aiken had also notched seven at Villanova in December. The school record for blocks in a game is 12 by all time leader Rodney Blake against Cleveland State on Dec. 2, 1987. Phil Martelli said, C.J. has become more of a presence defensively. When you can walk out as a freshman with nine blocks that s something. But we have to get more than face up jumpers. We have to get some baskets when he outruns people. It s a bright future but we just need it to be today. We can t wait for it to be a year from now. BLOCK PARTY: Led by C.J. Aiken, the Hawks top the Atlantic 10 in blocks per game, with 5.8 overall and 7.0 in league games. Aiken ranks second in the NCAA stats while Saint Joseph s is 13th as a team. JONES IN : Carl Tay Jones has recorded double figures in 14 of 15 games and has scored 20 plus points six times, including a career best 29 points vs. Minnesota. He had a 13 game scoring streak, which dated back to last year, come to an end at Holy Cross. Jones leads the Hawks with his 17.8 scoring average, while ranking fifth in the A 10. GIVING IT AWAY: After going four straight games with less than 10 turnovers, the Hawks fell victim to Duquesne s pressing defense and tied their season high with 19 turnovers. SJU had recorded a season low five 2010 11 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL 4 turnovers against Siena on Dec. 31. The Hawks bounced back and committed only eight against GW. On the year the Hawks are averaging 12.3 per game while forcing 12.1 by the opponents. IT S HERE: The all important conference season is upon the Hawks and they will be looking to get off to a better start than last year s 1 3 start. The Hawks played three of the four on the road and lost to, defeated Fordham, and then dropped games to Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure. SJU finished the 2009 10 A 10 with a 5 11 record. DOUBLED UP: Freshman Ronald Roberts recorded the Hawks first double double of the season against Duquesne when he had career highs of 13 points and 10 rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench. Roberts also blocked a personal best three shots while going 5 for 7 from the foul line. The freshman had four points, three rebounds and three blocks during a 13 1 run that saw the Hawks pull within 11 points. STAYING OVER: SJU is in the midst of one of its longest conference road trips in a while. Because of a Saturday game at Saint Louis, the Hawks will be staying in the Midwest for the rest of the week. SJU will practice at Dayton on Thursday before heading to St. Louis on Friday. Because of flight schedules, the Hawks don t get to fly home until Sunday morning. DIFFERENT STROKES: Phil Martelli has pointed out that in each of the last few losses, it s been something different for the Hawks. Against Duquesne, the Hawks committed 19 turnovers. In the loss to GW, SJU allowed the Colonials to hit a high percentage of threes (56%), were outrebounded by 13, and missed seven free throws. LANGSTON S LINE: Freshman Langston Galloway has been putting up solid all around numbers for the Hawks. He recorded a season best of 24 points at Boston University, while making 6 of 8 from 3 point range. He scored 20 points in his conference debut against Duquesne and has tallied 20 plus points on four occasions. He currently ranks second on the team in scoring (12.8), but leads the team in rebounding (5.9), assists (2.9), free throw percentage (93.8) and assist/turnover ratio (2.7). NEW TO THE NEST: Papa Samba Ndao (pronounced NUH doe) is the newest member of the Hawks. The freshman began attending classes and practicing with the team on December 30 and despite being eligible immediately, will redshirt the season. Ndao, a 6 8, 215 lb. forward who is originally from Dakar, Senegal, played scholastically at Montverde Academy in Florida. He averaged 10 points and four rebounds for a team which had four Division I signees. CLASS DISTINCTION: At almost the halfway point of the season, Phil Martelli won t use the Hawks youth as any kind of excuse. The year in school doesn t mean anything. There are five players out there who have practiced and prepared. And they were the most prepared group that we had. You just have to be a basketball player and some of them were basketball players tonight, he said after the Duquesne game. PERIMETER PROBLEMS: The Hawks have allowed their opponents to shoot over 43 percent from 3 point range, and an impressive 52.8 percent in the two conference games. Duquesne and GW combined to shoot 19 for 36 from beyond the arc at Hagan Arena. HOMESTAND: SJU is now back on the road after closing out a threegame homestand with just the sixth contest played at Hagan Arena this season. SJU has played in Philadelphia seven times this year, counting the game vs. Rutgers at The Palestra. The Hawks will be rewarded for their early season travels as they will play all but two games in

2010 11 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL 5 Philadelphia during the month of January this week s games at Dayton and Saint Louis. SJU is 2 4 this year at Hagan Arena. THE FIVE FRESHMEN: Saint Joseph s freshman class has accounted for 53 percent of the minutes played this season (1594 of 3000). SJU also leads all schools in the A 10 with 42 freshman starts on the year. C.J. Aiken HONOR ROLL Atlantic 10 Preseason All Rookie Team Langston Galloway Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week (Nov. 29) Big 5 Player of the Week (Nov. 29) Atlantic 10 Preseason All Rookie Team RINGING OUT THE OLD: Saint Joseph s was definitely ready to ring in a New Year and say goodbye to 2010. In the previous calendar year, the Hawks went 12 21. FROM THE LINE: The Hawks are one of the better free throw shooting teams in the conference, even though they have struggled as of late. SJU ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10, hitting 70 percent overall. But in the two league games, the Hawks are hitting just 64.3 percent. Against GW, Saint Joseph s converted only 58.3 percent, which was tied as the second lowest effort of the season. Langston Galloway continues to be the Hawks best from the line, converting 93.8 percent. Carl Jones is shooting 75 percent but is 11 for 17 (64.7%) in the two league games. FALLING SHORT: In the opening two games of A 10 play, the Hawks dug themselves holes early, falling behind to both Duquesne and GW by double digits. SJU trailed Duquesne by as much as 16 in the first half, and 26 in the second, and pulled with 10 points late in the game. GW took a 12 point first half lead and the Hawks fought to within two points with seven minutes to play, but could only get within four with under a minute to play. OUT OF ACTION: Senior Charoy Bentley sat out three games after having an emergency appendectomy on Dec. 15. He saw his first action back against GW. Todd O Brien has missed four games with a sprained ankle (BU, Siena, Duquesne, GW) and is questionable for this week. JUST IN TIME: Sophomore Justin Crosgile has upped the level of his play over the past few weeks. At Creighton, he had a then season best 15 points, hitting 3 of 5 3 pointers. And two games later at Holy Cross, he helped SJU end its six game losing streak by scoring a career high 19 points. Crosgile connected on a personal best 5 of 6 3 point field goals while going 5 for 9 from the field. Coach Phil Martelli attributes it to the way Crosgile practices, saying, At Creighton, Justin was really good, because he practiced really well. At BU, he was really bad (2 points), because he practiced badly. And he s practiced well the past few days. He s put together back to back games in double figures against Holy Cross and Siena. Last season, Crosgile started the final 19 games of the year and averaged 6.7 points. He has come off the bench in all 15 contests this season and is averaging 5.6 points per game. BACKCOURT BOOST: The backcourt of Carl Jones and Langston Galloway combined to score 50 of the Hawks 73 points vs. Minnesota, while also totalling nine of the team s 13 assists and seven of the 10 steals. The duo made all nine of the team s 3 pointers and 14 of the 25 field goals. At Boston University, Jones and Galloway combined for 45 points and eight 3 pointers, with Galloway making six of them. BEYOND THE ARC: SJU has struggled from 3 point range thus far, hitting 31.8 percent with a low of 16.7 percent at Drexel (1 for 6). Langston Galloway is the Hawks leader with 30 3 pointers at a 40 percent mark, followed by Carl Jones with 26. Last year, the Hawks struggled greatly on the road, winning only one game outside of Philadelphia, at George Washington on March 3, 2010. The good news for SJU is that there are only six games remaining which are outside of Philadelphia, with two this week. SLOW STARTERS: In a few games this year, the Hawks have started out slowly, only to step up their play in the second half. The latest instance was the GW game where the Hawks shot just 22 percent from threepoint range in the first half, but converted 47% in the second half. Here are the differences between the first and second halves, with shooting percentage, 3 point percentage and points scored: 1st Half 2nd Half (FG% 3Pt% Points) (FG% 3Pt% Points) Penn State 20% 10% 19 46% 27% 38 Fairfield 30% 22% 19 68% 0% 41 Princeton 40% 16% 27 51% 44% 38 Minnesota 23% 17% 26 53% 50% 47 Holy Cross 35% 57% 31 50% 43% 34 GW 35% 22% 31 52% 47% 40 REBOUNDING WOES: Rebounding was one of the Hawks biggest weaknesses last year and SJU has shown a glimpse of that again this season. ROAD WARRIORS: The Hawks have faced a schedule that was frontloaded with away games, as SJU has already played eight on the road, In 2009 10, the Hawks were outrebounded in all but four contests and compared to just four at home. Saint Joseph s owns a 2 6 road record owned a 8.0 margin. This season, Saint Joseph s has been outrebound

2010 11 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL 6 ed in eight games, with the biggest margin being 46 23 at Drexel. On the season, SJU owns a rebounding margin of 3.4. The Hawks did win the battle of the boards against Duquesne, 40 29, for the biggest plus margin of the year. LOSING IT: The Hawks saw two substantial leads disappear at Boston University. SJU held a 9 point margin in the first half, but BU scored the final eight points of the period to close to 39 38 at halftime. Saint Joseph s built up a 12 point lead in the second half, but the home team used a 27 6 run over a nine minute stretch in the period to earn the win. It was the largest lead lost this season by the Hawks. WHIRLWIND TOUR: The Hawks didn t fare too well in their NBA type schedule the week of Nov. 30, losing all three games on the road in a span of five days. SJU lost at Drexel, Villanova and Princeton, making three short trips which had a total round trip distance of 125.2 miles. FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH: Saint Joseph s is sporting one of its most youthful squads in school history, and the youngest under Phil Martelli, with a combined 11 years of college experience entering this season. The Hawks have just two seniors and one junior on the roster. At the start of the season the average age of the SJU squad was 19.8 years old. TOP ROOKIE: Langston Galloway earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week and Big 5 Player of the Week honors on Nov. 29 after his performance in the Fairfield and Rutgers wins. The freshman averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists while shooting 82.3 percent (14 for 17) from the floor and 83.3 percent (5 for 6) from three point range. He scored a season best 20 points on 7 for 8 shooting in the win over Rutgers, handing out a game high assists while committing just one turnover. In a victory at Fairfield, Galloway led the Hawks with 15 points connecting on 7 of 9 shots from the floor while collecting five rebounds, three blocks and two steals. He is the only Hawk to earn a weekly honor thus far. TALE OF TWO HALVES: After falling behind to Fairfield by as much as 11 points in the first half, Saint Joseph s certainly had a different look in the second. The Hawks came out quickly, scoring six straight points, including steals and breakaways by Langston Galloway and Carl Jones, to tie the game. SJU shot 68.2 percent in the second half, after hitting just 30 percent in the first. Idris Hilliard, C.J. Aiken and Jones each scored 10 points in the half, but the Hawks did it with defense as well, posting seven steals and nine blocks in the second period. FOR STARTERS: The Hawks starting lineup has been the same in all but one game (Penn State). Idris Hilliard and Carl Jones have been joined by freshmen C.J. Aiken, Daryus Quarles and Langston Galloway in the starting five, giving Phil Martelli his youngest starting lineup ever. WAITING GAME: It took a little longer than usual for the Hawks to get their first win, with it coming in the third game of the season. SJU hadn t gone 0 2 to start the season since 1998 99. are facing four more schools picked to represent their leagues in this year's tourney. Western Kentucky (Sun Belt), Fairfield (MAAC), Princeton (Ivy League) and Boston University (America East) each topped the 2010 11 preseason coaches polls in their respective conferences. NEW FACES: SJU welcomed seven new players into the fold this year, with five freshmen, one sophomore transfer and a sophomore walk on. The Hawks highly touted freshman class consists of C.J. Aiken the Pennsylvania Player of the Year; Langston Galloway an All State selection from Louisiana; Daryus Quarles an All South Jersey honoree; Ronald Roberts an All State selection from Saint Peter s Prep, which was ranked 6th in the nation; and Patrick Swilling another All State honoree from Louisiana. The Hawks transfer is Halil Kanacevic, who was named to the CAA All Rookie Team last season while at Hofstra. Kanacevic will have three seasons of eligibility beginning in 2011 12. Also new to the squad is walk on Taylor Trevisan, who hails from Salesianum High School in Delaware. FIRST CLASS HAWKS: The Hawks freshman class was ranked as the 25th best recruiting class in the nation by MaxPreps. HAWKS AT HAGAN: This marks the second season for the Hawks in the Michael J. Hagan 85 Arena. SJU opened the renovated and expanded homecourt last year on November 13, with an overtime win over Drexel. The arena was the result of a 16 month expansion and renovation of the previous on campus home, Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, which served as the Hawks' homecourt for 59 years. The Hawks posted an 8 4 record in their first year in Hagan Arena, and with a 2 2 record this year, now own an all time record of 329 88 playing on campus. FAMILY TIES: Freshman Langston Galloway is the nephew of assistant coach Geoff Arnold. Patrick Swilling, Jr., who was an AAU teammate of Galloway, is the son of former NFL All Pro linebacker Pat Swilling. The elder Swilling was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010. He played at Georgia Tech in the 1980 s before enjoying a pro career with the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions and the Oakland Raiders. Swilling s cousin, Dale Davis, played in the NBA from 1991 to 2007 for Indiana, Portland, Golden State and Detroit. The father of Ronald Roberts, Jr., Ron, Sr., played basketball at the University of Oklahoma from 1985 to 1987. CAJUN HAWKS: Saint Joseph s has expanded its geographic base and fellow Louisiana natives Langston Galloway and Patrick Swilling become the first two Hawks from that state. PRESEASON PICKS: The Hawks were picked to finish 12th in the Atlantic 10 in voting by the league s coaches and media. Freshmen C.J. Aiken and Langston Galloway were selected to the Preseason All Rookie Team. CLASSIC CHAMPS: Saint Joseph s was crowned as the champion of the Philly Hoop Group Classic, winning all three games against Norfolk State, Fairfield and Rutgers. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: This season, the Hawks will face six teams which reached the NCAA Tournament in 2010 Minnesota,, Siena,, Xavier and Villanova. SJU will also face two teams from the 2010 NIT, Rhode Island and tournament champion Dayton. Two of the Hawks opponents were ranked in the preseason Top 25 (Villanova, ), while Minnesota has been ranked for a few weeks. The Hawks FUTURE TRAVELS: Saint Joseph s has been announced as one of the eight teams participating in the 2011 Charleston Classic on Nov. 17, 18 and 20 at the Carolina First Arena. Joining the Hawks will be Baylor, Georgia Tech, LSU, Seton Hall, Tulsa, Virginia Commonwealth, and Western Kentucky. IF YOU BUILD IT...: Saint Joseph's basketball opened a new era on November 13, 2010 when the Hawks hosted Drexel in the inaugural game in the Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena. The Arena was the result of a 16 month expansion and renovation of the previous on campus

2010 11 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL 7 home, Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, which served as the Hawks' homecourt for 59 years. Hagan Arena provides a number of fanfriendly renovations as well as an increase of 1,000 seats from the Fieldhouse, bringing the capacity to 4,200. Michael J. Hagan 85, and his wife, Joyce, are the lead benefactors for the most comprehensive enhancement of athletic facilities in Saint Joseph s history. A 1985 graduate of SJU, he received his bachelor s degree in accounting and was a member of the Hawks golf team. The former chairman and chief executive officer of NutriSystem, Inc., Hagan was named the 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year by Forbes magazine. The Hagans have three children, Michael, Colin and Emma. COMFORT ZONE: Saint Joseph s comprehensive expansion and renovation project also included the building of the 20,000 square foot Ramsay Basketball Center, named for Hall of Fame coach Dr. Jack Ramsay. The Ramsay Center, which is adjacent to Hagan Arena, houses offices for the men's and women's basketball programs; locker rooms and player lounges for both teams; a video study/interview room; and the Athletic Communications Office. Also Included in the Ramsay Center is the Thomas J. Wynne '63 Hall of Fame Room, which is used for pre and post game receptions as well as other functions. The men s basketball locker room is named for SJU great Jameer Nelson while the players lounge bears the name of former standout Delonte West. CRADLE OF COACHES: The Saint Joseph s coaching connection is an impressive one. A total of seven Saint Joseph s graduates have gone on to become head coaches in the NBA, and SJU is tied with Illinois for second on the list of universities with alums that have served as NBA head coaches. Indiana tops the list with 11 graduates that have coached in the league. Jim O Brien is the only current NBA head coach, and is now in his fourth season with the Indiana Pacers. Below is the list of former Hawks who have held positions as NBA head coaches: Player (Class) NBA Teams W L (yrs.) Jack Ramsay ( 49) Phila., Buf., Port., Ind. 864 783 (21) Jim Lynam ( 63) L.A. Nelson earned All Star status in 2009, which was his fifth year in the league. TAKING CARE OF THEIR OWN: Phil Martelli s staff consists of three former Hawk players. Assistant coach Mark Bass was a junior on Martelli s first team in 1995 96, and then was a senior on the squad that reached the NIT Final in 1997. Assistant coach Geoff Arnold played for the Hawks from 1982 to 1986, and was a member of the 1986 Atlantic 10 championship team. Arnold was a member of Martelli s coaching staff for one season in 1995 96, and then returned to Hawk Hill at the start of the 2008 09 season. Director of basketball operations Rob Sullivan and was a member of the 2004 Elite Eight team. A GOOD CAUSE: Phil Martelli is the co chair of the Philadelphia Coaches vs. Cancer effort, which is one of the nation s highest fundraising groups for Coaches vs. Cancer. The group, which is comprised of the city s six Division I coaches and their wives, raised close to $1 million last year. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Phil, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Niagara University while Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is an assistant at Rutgers University. The elder Martelli faced off against one of his sons for the first time when the Hawks defeated Rutgers on Nov. 26. SPELL IT OUT: The corporate title of Saint Joseph s University, which has been in place since Saint Joseph s was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1979, is now the public title of the institution for all aspects of its operations. The University should be referred to as Saint Joseph s. The abbreviations SJU or St. Joe s are acceptable in headlines or certain informal references. LOOKING AHEAD: The Hawks will stay on the road and visit Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon. SJU returns home for the first of four straight games in Philadelphia, hosting Rhode Island on Jan. 19. 2010 11 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL 9 THE HAWK The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for 55 years. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the 1954 55 season. Brennan, an ex Marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a 69 56 win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figure eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap ometer on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a tuition scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. Tim Higgins is the Hawk mascot this season, and is the 33rd student to wear the wings. He is a senior marketing major from Merchantville, N.J. ON THE AIR TV: Saint Joseph's will have a minimum of 10 games televised this season, including seven that will be seen locally in Philadelphia. Four Atlantic 10 contests will be televised regionally as part of CBS College Sports syndication package. Saint Joseph's will appear on ESPNU on December 3 in the annual rivalry game with Villanova at The Pavilion at 8:30 p.m. while the Hawks' January 29th game with from The Palestra will be seen on ESPNU. (Complete schedule on page 2) RADIO: All of Saint Joseph s games can be heard via audio streaming on www. free of charge through Stretch Internet, while 10 games will also be broadcast by WNTP (990 AM). The Saint Joseph s Sports Network team of Matt Martucci and Joe Lunardi will provide the play by play and color commentary. Martucci, a 2006 Syracuse University graduate, is in his second year as full time play by play announcer. Lunardi, in his 21st year on the Hawks radio broadcasts, is the assistant vice president for marketing at Saint Joseph s, and is a college basketball analyst for ESPN.com with his popular Bracketology column. (Radio schedule on page 2) HAWKTALK: Phil Martelli s HawkTalk will return for its 15th season in 2010 11. The most unique coach s television show in college basketball, it was named the Best Coach s Show in the Nation by The Sporting News. Martelli s show combines a Tonight Show format with unique guests and just a few basketball highlights. The show airs locally on Comcast SportsNet beginning on January 12 for six weeks, Wednesdays at 11 p.m. and Thursdays at 4 p.m. Points Rebounds Assists FG% 3 pt FG% FT% Points Rebounds Assists Blocks Steals FG Made 3 pt FG Made FT Made STATS BY HALF High: 47 vs. Minnesota (2nd) Low: 19 at Penn State (1st) High: 21 vs. Duquesne (2nd) Low: 11 at Drexel (1st) High: 12 at Creighton (1st) Low: 1 at Drexel (2nd) High: 68.2% at Fairfield (2nd) Low: 20.0% at Penn State (1st) High: 57.1% at Holy Cross (1st) Low: 0% two times High: 100% (2x) last vs. Siena (1st) Low: 25% at Villanova (2nd) INDIVIDUAL HIGHS BY HALF 25, Carl Jones vs. GW (2nd) 7, (2x) last by Ronald Roberts vs. Duquesne (2nd) 6, Carl Jones vs. Duquesne (1st) 7, C.J. Penn State 66 SJU 57 Saint Joseph's fought back from a double digit halftime deficit, closing to within six with five minutes remaining, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks fell to Penn State, 66 57, at the Bryce Jordan Center. Idris Hilliard led the way for SJU, scoring 13 points, while Langston Galloway added 11 points and nine rebounds. C.J. Aiken (12) and Carl Jones (10) were also in double figures. Neither team shot well from the floor, as Penn State was 20 of 55 (36.4%) from the field and the Hawks were 19 of 55 (34.5%) overall. With the score tied, 17 17, PSU closed the half on a 13 2 run to take a 30 19 advantage into the locker room. The teams essentially traded baskets in the second half, with neither squad scoring more than five points in a row. SJU managed to claw back within seven on a Todd O'Brien dunk with 5:39 to go, and Jones' 3 pointer with 5:01 to play cut the PSU margin to six at 51 45, but PSU converted 9 of 14 free throws over the last 3:41 to salt away the victory. Drexel 62 SJU 50 Drexel dominated the boards and defeated Saint Joseph's, 62 50, to end the Hawks' threegame winning streak. It was the first game between the city rivals played at Drexel's Daskalakis Center since the 1992 93 season. The Dragons held a commanding 46 23 edge in rebounding, and limited SJU to just 22 second half points. Carl Jones was the lone Hawk in double figures with 20 points and he connected on SJU's only three pointer on the night, as the visitors were just 1 for 6 behind the arc. Langston Galloway scored nine points for SJU. Leading 31 28 at halftime, Drexel scored the first five points of the half. With the home team leading 38 32 at 16:15, both teams went on scoring droughts, with Drexel not scoring until 12:30 to play and SJU going for five minutes without a basket until Ronald Roberts connnected on a jumper. Drexel led by as much as 49 36 in the second half, and Jones singlehandedly tried to get the Hawks back in the game. The sophomore scored nine of the Hawks' next 12 points to pull SJU within, 55 48, with 3:52 remaining. But a Drexel layup built the Dragons' lead back to 58 48 and they closed out the double digit win. Carl Jones led the Hawks with 19 points, and freshman C.J. Aiken blocked a career high seven shots. Down by 20 points in the second half, the Hawks' Daryus Quarles and Charoy Bentley hit consecutive threes during a late 9 0 run that got the Hawks within 11 points, while a jumper by Langston Galloway pulled SJU to 69 60 with 40 seconds to play. But Villanova's Corey Stokes hit two free throws at :33 to provide the final double digit margin. SJU came out strong in the first half and held the very early lead before Villanova went on a 6 0 run to take a 16 11 edge. Saint Joseph's would cut VU's lead to 20 18 on five consecutive points from Jones, but the Wildcats outscored the Hawks, 12 5, in the last five minutes of the period to take a 38 28 lead at the break. Villanova used another 12 5 run to start the second half, and within five minutes, held a commanding 50 33 lead. The Wildcats led by as much as 21 points, but SJU's young group refused to quit. Princeton 74 SJU 65 Saint Joseph s used a spirited second half effort, but couldn't overcome the deficit, as the Hawks fell to Princeton, 74 65, at Jadwin Gym for their third loss in a row. Carl Jones scored a career high 24 points in the loss, with 15 points in the second half, on 6 for 10 shooting, as the Hawks attempted a second half comeback. Freshman Ronald Roberts had a season best 10 points and seven rebounds. Princeton dominated from the start, jumping out to an 8 0 lead and shooting 5 of 9 from 3 point range, to take a 30 12 lead by the 10 minute mark. The Tigers connected on 58.1 percent from the field and owned a 45 27 lead at halftime. The Hawks came out like a different team in the second half, and forced five Princeton turnovers while keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard for over five minutes. Trailing 47 34, Roberts would spark the Hawks with two dunks and a steal as Saint Joseph's pulled within 52 42, on a dunk by C.J. Aiken. But back to back three pointers by Mack Darrow and Dan Mavraides, and a layup by Ian Hummer built the Princeton lead back up to 60 46 with 7:40 remaining.
