Notes from North Winter Edition 2015 (Twitter and Tweet) Newsletter This Edition will be on the NMGC website Chairmans Notes Winter is once again upon us with a vengeance, with the November weather being one of the wettest for years, yet in spite of this excessive amount of rainfall, the course remained playable most of the time which illustrates the policy adopted of removing trees and freeing up the airflow, especially around the teeing areas, is working. It is intended to carry out extensive work on the course over the winter period, with an anticipated spend of 9K being the estimated costs. The work has already started with the provision of several winter tees, positioned away from the main teeing areas. Most of the remainder of the planned work will involve the three par 3 s receiving a major overall using a new bunker construction technique called DuraBunker supplied and fitted by a company called EnviroBunker. The materials used are a synthetic grass product which requires little or no maintenance. Further tree removal and drainage is also to be undertaken on these holes and at the 11 th the installation of a root barrier around the large poplar tree to the left of the green, has been recommended by our course consultant Robert Laycock. The paths have been cleaned at some expense and the club have purchased a petrol driven washer in an effort to complete the remainder. Volunteers would be welcome to complete this work and thanks go to Brett Sutcliffe for his contribution at the 1 st. The full time Green Staff has been increased by the employment of James Malloy who has in previous years worked during the summer months only; The Board felt it was the right time to offer James full time employment in view of his contribution during the golfing season and to lose his experience gained to date would be counter productive. We have also seen the introduction of our new cleaner Pauline Munroe who has replaced Hannah. We wish Pauline a long and happy association with the club. Hannah deserves our thanks for her 20years plus service and our best wishes for her retirement. The development update held on Friday 11 th September wasn t well attended and it is hoped that future updates will attract more support so that important issues raised can be dealt with at the meeting. It was decided that only one coordinator per match would be adequate and they have already been selected. The fees next year will remain at 8 at home and 10 away. Maurice Jones has advised that this will be his last season as Secretary. We thank him for his enthusiasm and innovative approach, during his time in office. David McKail (Treasurer) Notes from the Captain Dec 2015 In September Charlie Rodgers won the Ian Lawson Trophy (named after a former Seniors Secretary), however, next year it is more convenient for us to play this competition in July. Time has flown since the end of summer and we are now coming up to Christmas and New Year. The Captains final in September was a brilliant 2 days of sunshine (remember that!) with extra prizes of cars and cash thanks to Andy Ambler from Claybank Motors. The trophy was eventually won after an exciting last hole play off by Mr Mick Philbin Congratulations to the senior s team who were triumphant in the MDGA final at Manchester Golf Club after a close fought match against Blackburn. Well done to the juniors who had a superb presentation night organised by Mr Pete Majerski and Mr Mike Challinor. Good luck to the new Junior Captain Jordan Wilson. The Presentation night / Irish evening was a great success despite not being very well attended. The DJ/Singer, the Irish dancers and the food were all superb. My thanks to all those who attended who had an excellent evening and supported myself and the club. Mick Philbin with the Captain s Trophy Mr Paul Keogh the winner of the Sumner Jug. Another thanks to all who attended the Candlelit dinner, this was another great night of excellent food and entertainment. Thanks to Mr JJ Walsh and Mr T Hyde for their help in making it so enjoyable to all, and to Callum for the great food.
