Game time between the two New York state schools is set for 7 p.m. LoCOCO NEARS 100-POINT MARK 4 Junior Nick LoCoco has returned from injury and now nears another career milestone. 4 LoCoco has totaled 96 career points on 22 goals and 74 assists. He is just four points shy of becoming the 16th player in the program s history to record his 100th career point. 4 The junior would also join his classmate Adam Jones, who became the 15th member of the 100-point club earlier in the 2010 season. 4 LoCoco already ranks sixth in the program s history with 74 career assists. MAN-UP SUCCESS 4 While the Canisius offense has struggled at times this season, the Griffs man-up offense has had no problems finding the back of the net. 4For the season, Canisius has converted 48 percent of its extra-man chances. The Griffs are currently ranked ninth in the country. 4Canisius has scored at least one man-up goal in every game, highlighted by a season high three against No. 17 Harvard and an overtime winner against Saint Joseph s. 4Senior Mike Benzinger and junior Adam Jones lead the Griffs with three man-up goals each this season. JONES CONTINUES CLIMB UP SCHOOL RECORD BOOK 4 Adam Jones has led the Canisius offense since first arriving on campus and the junior is Career Points now moving up the school s record book. 4 Jones now ranks 13th in school history with 109 career points and 10th with 87 career goals. 4 The junior has led the team in scoring in each of his first two seasons with Canisius. GIOURMETAKIS LEADS OVERTIME HEROICS 4 After a slow start to the season, Canisius was in need of some victories and was able to pull out two close games in overtime. The Griffs won their first game of the season against Manhattan in two overtimes and then followed with an overtime victory at Saint Joseph s. 4 Canisius played consecutive overtime games for the first time in school history. 4 Sophomore Simon Giourmetakis has led the Griffs charge in the extra period. CANISIUS - HOBART SERIES HISTORY 4The Griffs have never defeated Hobart in 10 all-time meetings. The Statesmen have topped the Griffs in each of the past five seasons. 4Last season, Hobart earned a 17-6 victory in Geneva. The Statesmen scored the first seven goals of the game en route to the win. Adam Jones led the Griffs with two goals. 4Hobart is the only team to keep Jones and Nick LoCoco off the scoreboard during their careers. 4Jones did not score against the Statesmen in 2008, the only time in his 36 career games he did not net a goal. LoCoco was held without a point last season, the only time in his 33 career games he did not record a point. ABOUT THE STATESMEN 4 Hobart has lost its last three games and enters the contest with a 2-7 mark. 4Six of the Statesmen s nine games have been decided by three or fewer goals this season. 4Chris Pederson and Kevin Curtin lead Hobart with 24 points this season. Pederson has scored a team-best 14 goals to go along with 10 assists, while Curtin has recorded 12 goals and a teamleading 12 assists. 4Max Silberlicht has started all nine games in goal for the Statesmen, posting a goals against average of 10.62 and a save percentage of.574. 4Bobby Dattilo has won 59.1 percent of his faceoffs (107-181) to anchor Hobart s play at the faceoff X. Dattilo enters the week ranked eighth nationally in faceoff percentage. LoCOCO S RETURN LEADS TO GRIFFS VICTORIES 4 With the Griffs needing to get out of an early-season slump, junior Nick LoCoco returned to the lineup and provided a much needed boost. 4 Canisius is 2-2 since the two-time All-MAAC honoree returned to the lineup after missing the first four games of the season due to injury. The Griffs were 0-4 without LoCoco. 4 The Griffs have averaged 9.75 goals per game since LoCoco s return. In the four games without him, Canisius never scored more than six goals and averaged 5.75 per game. 4 LoCoco already ranks third on the team with 11 points, posting two goals and nine assists. COATES DEFENDS POSITION MOVE 4 Senior Dan Coates has quickly proved that his move to close defense was a wise decision. 4 Coates, who played his first two seasons with the short-stick as a defensive midfielder, leads all Canisius players with 13 caused turnovers and places second on the team with 27 ground balls. 4 The senior captain currently ranks 23rd in the country with 1.63 caused turnovers per game. 4 In his first career start at close defense, Coates posted career highs and led all players with six ground balls and three caused turnovers against No. 17 Harvard. WE RE GOING STREAKING! 4 One of the reasons for junior Adam Jones success at Canisius is because of his consistent play. 4 Jones has scored a goal in his last 24 games. His 24-consecutive games with a point is the 11thlongest streak in the nation and the third-longest by a midfielder. 4 In total, Jones has scored at least one goal in 35 of the 36 games he has played in. JONES LEADS THE MIDDLE 4Junior Adam Jones has been the most prolific scoring midfielder since his arrival at Canisius. 4 For the second-straight season last year, Jones led all midfielders nationally with 2.75 goals per game. Overall, Jones ranked third in the country. 4 Jones also led all midfielders in the nation as a freshman with 2.38 goals per game. 4 The junior currently leads Canisius with 24 points, 16 goals and eight assists this season. LoCOCO ASSISTS GRIFFS TO VICTORY 4 With his return to the lineup, junior Nick LoCoco resumed his quest to top the school s record book for career assists. 4 Just a little more than two seasons into his career, LoCoco is tied for sixth in school history with 74 career helpers. 4 The junior needs just 21 more assists to reach current head coach Randy Mearns school record total of 95. BARKAS ANCHORS CANISIUS DEFENSE 4Senior Matt Barkas is set to anchor the Canisius defense again in 2010. 4As a junior in 2009, Barkas led the Griffs with 22 caused turnovers in addition to 68 ground balls. 4Barkas ranked sixth nationally among long poles with 5.23 ground balls per game last season. 4A second-team All-MAAC selection last year, Barkas was named to the preseason all-conference team this season. 4Through eight games in 2010, Barkas leads the Griffs with 27 ground balls and ranks third with 10 caused turnovers. BARKAS SHOWS OFFENSIVE SKILLS 4 Senior defender Matt Barkas once again showed that he can be just as dangerous on offense as he is on defense. 4 The senior has scored two goals this season, raising his career total to seven. 4 Last season, Barkas recorded six points (4g, 2a), the most by a Canisius defender since the 1997 season. REVOLVING DOOR AT GOALKEEPER 4 For the third-straight season, Canisius will see a new face at the goaltender position. 4 After Chris Courteau (2008) and Bryan Jack (2009) each started one season with the Griffs, Canisius will now turn toward sophomores Sean Callahan and Kyle Bell to anchor the defense. 4 The two combined to play 22 minutes in their rookie season last year. 4 After seven career starts, Callahan has posted a goals against average of 11.53 and a save percentage of.444. Bell has appeared in three games and started on Saturday versus Marist. He owns a goals against average of 11.71 and a save percentage of.333. BROTHERLY LOVE 4 Four sets of brothers will roam the Canisius sidelines this season. 4 For the third-consecutive year, there will be multiple Caldiero brothers playing for Canisius. This year, Alex, a senior midfielder, and Drew, a junior defensive midfielder, will be joined by their brother, Nick, a rookie who plays the midfield. 4 Brendan O Hagan, a midfielder, and Ryan O Hagan, a defender are both in their second season with the Griffs. 4 Junior midfielder Mike Rautenstrauch is joined by his brother and freshman attackman Joe Rautenstrauch this season. 4 Finally, assistant coach Greg Campbell and rookie defender Joe Campbell conclude the Canisius brothers connections. Greg also played for the Griffs from 2001 to 2004. ALL-AMERICAN JONES 4For the second-straight season, junior Adam Jones earned preseason All-America recognition by Inside Lacrosse. 4The nation s leading scorer at the midfield position each of the last two seasons, Jones was named an All-American in 2008 by USILA, becoming the first Griff to garner the accolade. 4The Preseason MAAC Player of the Year, Jones leads the Griffs with 24 points, 16 goals and eight assists during the 2010 season. FOUR GRIFFS TO REPRESENT CANADA 4 Four former and current Canisius players have been named to the defending world champion Team Canada s roster for the 2010 Men s Lacrosse World Championship. 4Canisius graduates Angus Dineley, Kevin Ross and Matt Vinc plus current Griff Adam Jones were all named to the Team Canada roster. 4Jones was named the MVP of the Under-19 World Championship in the summer of 2008. 4In addition, Canisius head coach Randy Mearns will serve as an assistant with the team. 4Mearns and Vinc were both members of the team that won the championship in 2006. FOUR EARN PRESEASON HONORS 4 Three Griffs were named to the MAAC All-Preseason Team prior to the start of the 2010 season. 4 Juniors Adam Jones, who also named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, and Nick LoCoco earned preseason recognition for the second-straight season, while senior defender Matt Barkas was named to the team for the first time. 4 Jones earned first-team all-conference honors following the 2009 season, while LoCoco and Barkas both earned second-team honors. 4 Canisius three selections to the preseason team were tied for the most in the league with Siena. 4 Also, senior Tim Rowley joined the three Griffs on the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-MAAC Team. GRIFFS NAME FIVE TEAM CAPTAINS 4 Five players will serve as team captains for the 2010 campaign. 4 Seniors Matt Barkas, Mike Benzinger and Tim Rowley plus junior Adam Jones were all named team captains for the second-straight season. 4 Senior Dan Coates will also serve as a team captain for the first time. Canisius won its first MAAC Championship, posting dominating victories over Manhattan (11-2) and VMI (14-5) en route to the title. Mearns mentored the Griffs first All-American during the 2008 season. Adam Jones was honored by USILA and was one of only three freshmen in the country to earn All-America accolades. The Griffs won the MAAC regular-season title for the second time in three seasons. Canisius also earned a share of the 2006 championship. Nick LoCoco was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year, marking the second-straight season a Griff earned the honor. Tim Rowley was named the conference s Co-Rookie of the Year in 2007. Canisius set school records with 10 wins and seven conference victories. The Griffs also set a program record with eight-consecutive wins during the season, doubling the previous standard. The 2008 season is just one of the many highlights during Mearns successful coaching tenure. In his 11 seasons, Canisius has won 62 games and 49 conference games. Mearns led the Griffs to their first postseason appearance in 2003, earning a trip to the MAAC Tournament. Canisius has since participated in five of the last seven tournaments, winning its first title in 2008. Individual success has also been a common theme under Mearns. A total of 19 Griffs have earned allconference accolades, including Jones, LoCoco and Matt Barkas following the 2009 campaign. Along with Rowley and LoCoco, Kevin Ross was another Griff to earn an individual accolade, picking up MAAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2006. Mearns has also helped guide many of his student-athletes to the next level. Four Canisius standouts have been selected in the first round of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) Draft in the last seven seasons. Mark Miyashita, who graduated from Canisius in 2003, was the first overall selection in the 2003 draft. Mearns also was an assistant coach on the Canadian national team that won the gold medal at the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship. The team was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2007 and Mearns also earned induction into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2008. The Canisius head coach will once be on the sidelines for the 2010 World Lacrosse Championship. While coaching the Griffs, playing in the NLL and working as an investment advisor, Mearns conquered another personal goal and again graduated from Canisius College with a master s in sport administration in 2002. Playing Career After helping the Canadian Junior National Team to a silver medal in the 1988 World Championships, Mearns was part of the first Canisius College recruiting class in 1989. Under former head coach Ed Van Tine, Mearns thrived offensively during his three-year stay and currently ranks second in career scoring with 190 points. He also still holds the single-season records for points (94) and assists (49) and is the Griff s all-time leader in assists (95). MEARNS YEAR-BY-YEAR Overall MAAC Year W L Pct. Mearns joined the Rochester Knighthawks in 1995. As their team captain, he lead the Knighthawks to four championship appearances ( 96, 97, 99, and 00) during his seven-year tenure and raised the Champions Cup with a 1997 victory over his former team, the Buffalo Bandits. In the summer of 2001, the 1999 NLL All-Star Game MVP was picked up by the Calgary Roughnecks in the National Lacrosse League expansion draft and was immediately traded back to the Bandits. The 2002 season saw Mearns have his best offensive output in his nine-year career, scoring 14 goals and dishing out 24 assists for 38 points. Balancing out the winter and spring months while at Canisius and playing professionally, Mearns played in the Canadian Junior A and Canadian Senior A Lacrosse Leagues. During a 10-year stint beginning in 1990, Mearns appeared in eight National Championships, five of them as team captain. Of these eight appearances, Mearns and his teammates were crowned champions six times.
