Principal s Message Dear Northwoods Elementary Families, You may have seen Northwoods featured on the news this week. The short story of why we were on the news is that students continued what has been a longstanding tradition at Northwoods to collect money to sponsor Freedom Honor Flights for Veterans. If you re not familiar with these, you can read more about the organization at this link. On Monday, we shared a grand total of how much money we had collected on Facebook $1,154.53. WEAU saw the story on Facebook and wanted to come out and talk to us more about it. However, by the time WEAU got to school on Tuesday, we had different news for them. Mr. Mead, who helped organize the fundraising this year, encouraged students to share stories of why they were donating and we highlighted them over the announcements regularly. Students had donated their tooth fairy money, piggy bank money, allowances, and more after knowing what the money was going to be used for. By this Tuesday, after we had stopped collecting, a fifth-grade student brought in $300 in donations and another story to share! In looking into it, the student s grandfather, who is a Veteran, donated $100, and a coworker of her mom who had heard we were collecting, donated $200. The coworker also wrote a letter thanking the student for the work helping Veterans and sharing that she has Veterans going back in her family through almost every major conflict in U.S. history including the Revolutionary War! As a result, we opened our collection back up because we were only $45 dollars away from being able to sponsor another Freedom Honor Flight for a Veteran. Besides the obvious good news of the impact these donations will have in sponsoring Veterans, it is also a significant opportunity for our students to learn and practice values relating to service, giving, and kindness. As a school we put a lot of focus on student learning in academic areas, but we also know how crucial it is to support student social and emotional learning too. Sincerely, Luke Stordahl P.S. The final total raised is $1,801. 77 an all-time Northwoods record! In the past week, students collected $177.24 and another $170.00 came in from people stopping in and dropping off donations after the news story. We now have more than enough to sponsor three Veterans! 2
Partnership Coordinator Corner Hello Families, Hopefully you got a flyer home (yellow) outlining a Winter Spirit Week for the students. Please be aware, this is completely voluntary. We just want our Eagles to have a fun way to close out 2018 here at school. Kids can participate at any level they choose, or not at all. Feel free to email me any pictures you may take of your kids on a Winter Spirit morning and we can get them on the Northwoods Facebook page. We had a special visit from the Hmong HS students of North and Memorial. Stay tuned next week for photos and more on what the students experienced. Also on FB soon, more photos from the Jungle Bell Bash! Liz Wiechert Partnership Coordinator 715-852-4107 Northwoods Pride of Eagles Here are the latest inductees to the Soaring High club.
