on the Dons. STILL ONE OF THE YOUNGEST TEAMS San José State was the youngest team in Division I last year with just four years of collegiate experience on the roster (two years of Division I and two years of junior college). With injuries, which have sidelined several players, the Spartans are nearly right back to where they were last year. Ta Rea Cunnigan (Jr., G, Winchester, Calif.), Classye James (Jr., G, East Palo Alto, Calif.) and Rebecca Woodberry (Jr., G, Phoenix, Ariz.) each have two years of collegiate experience. Riana Byrd (So., C, Richmond, Calif.) and Jayzyl Tauala (So., G, Pacifica, Calif.) have one year each of college experience. BEING HEALTHY HELPS Classye James (Jr., G, East Palo Alto, Calif.) was hampered by a hip injury all last season but gutted it out in 27 of the team s 30 games. She averaged 7.6 points, shot just.263 from the field and.183 from behind the arc. With a summer to heal, James is showing the game that earned her a McDonald s All-American nomination as a senior in high school. She is averaging 12.3 points, has reached double figure scoring in a total of 10 games, including seven of the last 10. Her shooting has improved to.363 (66-for-182) and in 17 games has already passed her scoring total from a year ago (213 points in 2013-14 vs. 206 in 27 games in 2012-13). SCOUTING UNLV The Rebels are 8-11 overall and 5-2 in Mountain West Conference action heading into the match up with the Spartans on Wednesday afternoon. UNLV split their two games last week. They defeated Utah State, 73-67, in Logan, Utah on Wednesday but fell at Fresno State, 70-52, on Saturday. Overall the Rebels are 5-7 in at home this season, but 2-1 in home conference games. Junior guard Danielle Miller leads the team in scoring (13.5/g) and ranks ninth in the MW. Ashley Rohde, a sophomore center, is the program s leading rebounder at 7.6/game and scores 7.2/g. Senior guard Mia Bell tops the Rebels at 3.7 assists and is at 11.6 points/game. Alana Cesarz, a junior forward, also scores in double figures at 13.1 points an outing. Head coach Kathy Olivier is in his sixth season leading the UNLV program. She brought a 72-85 program and 304-293 overall record into this year. This will be the 29th meeting between these programs. The Rebels hold a overwhelming 25-to-3 advantage in the all-time series. UNLV won the first 19 meetings, 10 of which were on their home court. The Spartans never won on the Rebels home court (0-14) including a 78-41 defeat in the 2011-12 season, the last time the programs met. 1977-78 H L 86-55 1981-82 A L 80-71 1983-84 A L 65-47 1985-86 H L 74-33 1986-87 H L 72-42 A L 88-41 1987-88 A L 87-40 H L 113-42 1988-89 H L 79-54 A L 91-60 San José State trails all-time series 3-to-25 1989-90 A L 76-46 H L 86-59 1990-91 A L 84-55 H L 79-46 1991-92 A L 95-55 H L 72-60 1992-93 H L 84-69 A L 95-52 1993-94 A L 84-59 H W 78-70 1994-95 A L 75-59 H L 86-56 1995-96 H W 78-66 A L 80-73 1996-97 A L 66-60 H W 70-60 2010-11 H L 80-48 2011-12 A L 78-41 2013-14 Preseason Mountain West Coaches Poll Rank Team (First-Place Votes) Points 1. LAST TIME OUT San Jose, Calif. - The Boise State Broncos equaled an Event Center record hitting 15 3-pointers, and shot 50 percent from long range, in a 90-69 win over the San José State women s basketball team on Saturday afternoon. The Broncos sank 7-of-13 three in the first 20 minutes. Yaiza Rodriguez and Brooke Pahukoa were each 3-for-3 from long range in the first half, 4-for-4 in the game, and led their team with 16 points apiece. With less than five minutes to play in the game Boise State was 15-for-25 from distance, 60 percent, but missed their last five attempts finishing 15-for-30 for the game. On top of hot shooting from downtown, Boise State was an efficient 19-for-41, 46 percent, inside the arc. Lexie Der and Miquelle Askew finished with 15 points each on 7-of-13 and 6-of-12 shooting, respectively. San José State (8-11, 2-6 MW) outrebounded the Broncos 40-to-37, led by Riana Byrd s 12 boards. She added 13 points for her fifth double double of the year. It is her 11th double figure rebounding effort this season and her fourth in a row. The Spartans, after struggling from the free throw line in their last game, made a season-high 31 free throws on 35 attempts. Byrd was 9-of-11 and Classye James went 9-of-10 from the stripe. Ta Rea Cunnigan, who was 5-of-6 from the line, led the Spartans with 16 points and Jasmine Smith, 4-of-4 on free throws, added 10 points. San José State had a 12-5 lead after a Rebecca Woodberry 3-pointer with 16:46 to play in the first half. But just over five minutes later, the Broncos completed a 21-to-4 run and had a 26-16 lead. They hit four threes led by Rodriguez s back-to-back makes in the run. Britta Hall s 3-pointer cut the deficit to seven, 26-19, on the next possession, but the Spartans would get no closer in the half and went to the locker room down 45-35. Cunnigan made a layup to open the second half and trimmed the Broncos lead to eight, 45-37, but Boise State then outscored San José State 12-2, over a four-minute span, and never looked back. Twice they build the lead to 30 points, the last coming at 85-55 with 5:20 to play. The Spartans closed the lead 21, in part by sinking 11-of-12 free throws down the stretch, before falling 90-69. TWO INKED TO NLIs The Spartans signed Myzhanique Ladd and Ali Bettencourt to National Letters of Intent to compete for the Spartans beginning in the 2014-15 school year. Ladd is a 5-8 guard who attends Cleveland High School in Seattle, Wash. She has earned All-Metro League honors each of the past two seasons, led the team to the 3A state semifinals in 2012 and last year won the state championship. Over the past two years Cleveland has a 51-10 record, 30-2 in league action. Ladd has also competed in track and cross country in high school. MyMy (Myzhanique) is a combo guard who could play the one, two or three for us, head coach Jamie Craighead said. She has great athleticism, quickness both north-south and side-to-side, and will be a great fit for what we want to do on both ends of the court. Her best basketball is ahead of her and, as a staff, we re excited to have her as a member of our first recruiting class. A 5-10 guard at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, Calif., Bettencourt is a shooter with a quick release and deep range. She earned first-team All-Delta River League, The Sacramento Bee All-Metro Team, and Cal-Hi Sports All-State honors last year after Oak Ridge reached the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals. Ali is a pure shooter who I ve been recruiting for the last two years. She can shoot it from 3-point range and has worked hard to develop her game off the dribble, which makes her a deadly offensive threat. She ll add much needed depth to our perimeter, which will allow us to go even faster. Head Coach Jamie Craighead Oregon (2002) First Year On September 16, 2013, Jamie Craighead, who coaches an up-tempo offense and stifling defense, was named the eighth head women s basketball coach at San José State University. I appreciate the opportunity that (Athletics Director) Gene Bleymaier and (Deputy Director) Marie Tuite have given me, said Craighead. After hearing about their vision for the women s basketball program at San José State, I am really excited to take on the challenge of this opportunity. I enjoy living and working in Northern California and have good recruiting ties in the area. I can not wait for the challenge of competing in the Mountain West, a league for which I have tremendous respect. Craighead comes to San José State after spending the past four seasons at Sacramento State, where she was the winningest women s head basketball coach in the last 20 years and the only coach to post a winning conference record at Sacramento State since they entered the Big Sky Conference in the 1996-97 season. Under her guidance the Hornets reached the Big Sky Conference Tournament for just the fifth (2012) and sixth (2013) times in program history. In those appearances, Sacramento State earned its first tournament wins and reached the semi-final round both years. The youngest head coach in Division I when she took over the Hornets in 2009, Craighead s teams, playing a fast-break type offense, led the Big Sky Conference in scoring in each of her four seasons. Sacramento State set several program records in 2012-13 including field goals made, assists, blocked shots and fewest turnovers committed. In addition, the team s 19 wins equaled the program s single-season record, which was set in the 1990-91 season. The Hornets led the Big Sky in points, 3-pointers, and assists and on the defensive end, topped the league in steals and blocks. Also in 2012-13, Craighead coached Kylie Kuhns and Megan Kritscher, two of the top post players in the Big Sky Conference. Kuhns, at only six feet tall, broke the school and Big Sky career rebounding records during the year, while also leading the team in scoring. For her efforts, Kuhns earned All-Big Sky first-team honors. Kritscher shattered the Big Sky single-season blocks record and ranked fourth in the NCAA in blocks per game for the season. In four seasons, nine of her players garnered All-Big Sky honors. She coached 2011-12 Big Sky Freshman of the Year Fantasia Hilliard, and 23 of her athletes received Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors for their work in the classroom. Prior to accepting the top job at Sacramento State, Craighead spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant for the Hornets before being promoted to Associate Head Coach the following year. Craighead started her coaching career in 2002 under two-time NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Gordy Presnell at Seattle Pacific University. In her three years at SPU, the team posted an 89-5 record, won three PacWest Conference titles, qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament each year and reached the championship game in 2005. After her success in Seattle, she spent two seasons as an assistant at Portland State University before taking a position at Sacramento State. We are very pleased to hire Jamie Craighead, who has Division I head coaching experience and who will lead San José State as we begin playing in the Mountain West, stated Bleymaier. She will be a tremendous asset to our basketball program, the University and to our community. As a collegiate player at the University of Oregon, Craighead led the Ducks to the 2002 WNIT championship after three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. When she finished her career, her 182 3-point field goals made ranked second all-time in Ducks history. Craighead earned honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 honors as a senior and graduated from Oregon with a bachelor s degree in educational studies in 2002. 12
