Notes from the Principal WEST DEPTFORD HIGH SCHOOL E NEWS EAGLE NEWS October 19, 2018 West Deptford Homecoming: West Deptford Homecoming Dance is Saturday, October 27, 2018, from 6:30 pm 10:30 pm in the HS gymnasium. Tickets are on sale in the Athletic Office. Homecoming SPIRIT WEEK is here!! Please remember that this is an exciting week for students as we prepare for the homecoming dance next Saturday. We have many exciting activities planned throughout the week. I do ask you to remind our students that appropriate school dress is expected. Masks and completely covered face paintings are not permitted. HOMECOMING SPIRIT WEEK: Monday (10/22) Tuesday (10/23) Wednesday (10/24) Thursday (10/25) Friday (10/26) MISMATCH DAY USA DAY!!! College/Sports Shirt Day NEON CLASS COLORS DAY GREEN AND WHITE EAGLE PRIDE DAY PEP RALLY FOR STUDENTS Spirit points are awarded during homeroom for each student who participates in each theme day. The class with the most points at the end of the week will be awarded the coveted spirit trophy at our homecoming pep rally! If there is any way that we can help you support the education of our students, please let us know. Thank you in advance for all that you do to make our school great! WELCOME: On Monday, October 15 th, West Deptford High School was excited to welcome one of West Deptford Police Department s new Class Three Officers, Officer Duffy. Officer Duffy will be onsite daily to provide additional school security throughout our building. Our district s SRO, Officer Jiles, will continue to be visible throughout the district and work hand in hand with Officer Duffy to keep our schools safe.

GUIDANCE NEWS: Dual Credit with RCGC Students in Public Speaking and Exploring Engineering II: Please be reminded that the deadline to apply for dual college credit through Rowan College at Gloucester County is Thursday, Oct. 25th. Please see Mrs. Quindlen in Guidance if you have any questions. Grades 10 12: High school students in grade 10 and up can take college courses at RCGC at a substantially discounted price. Students should see their guidance counselor for more info and to schedule an appt. with an RCGC Advisor. We will have an RCGC advisor on site in Guidance on October 30th. Grades 10 & 11: The American Learning Academy through Princeton University is offering high achieving 10th & 11th grade students interested in STEM careers the opportunity to spend 3 weekends at Princeton University studying Biomedical Engineering & Technology; Medical Science; and Applied Mathematics. Priority will be given to students coming from backgrounds typically underrepresented in STEM fields. There is a cost involved, but students are also encouraged to apply for program scholarships. Applications are due ASAP but no later than November 9th. Click here to view the flyer for more details. Accelerated Learning Academy Flyer Grades 11 & 12: Students who are interested in the armed services are invited to take the ASVAB test (Armed Services Vocational Battery) here at WDHS on Nov. 15th. Students must sign up in Guidance. The following colleges will be here next week: LaSalle, St. Bonaventure, Johnson & Wales, Temple, Rutgers, Camden Fine Art programs, and Rider. Students must sign up through their Naviance accounts. Grade 12: RCGC will be here for a senior assembly on Fri., Oct. 19th during 3rd period. All students who are have expressed an interest in RCGC will receive passes to attend. Counselors are busy working with seniors on their college applications. Students and parents are reminded that all transcripts must be requested in Naviance and can NOT be sent unless you have a signed transcript release form on file. SAT / ACT scores must be sent from the testing agency to each school to which you apply. Students must go to the testing websites to make those arrangements. Seniors are encouraged to start exploring scholarship opportunities. As we receive scholarship information, we will post it under the scholarship tab in Naviance. Students can then link right to the scholarship applications. Check back frequently as new scholarships are posted frequently! Parents of Seniors can complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) now based on 2017 income tax information. Go to https://fafsa.ed.gov for information. Families who are interested in the NJ STARS program and/or student loans for their child must also file the FAFSA.

SPIRIT WEEK 2018 IS HERE! As we count down the days to our Medieval Homecoming, Student Council hopes the halls are full of spirited knights and princesses. Each class has picked a theme day for the week for which participants will be counted and points awarded. The winning class will be awarded the Spirit Week Championship Cup at Friday s pep rally! Other ways for students to earn points: BANNER DECORATING CONTEST Each class has been tasked with creating an 8 10 foot vertical banner including a class crest which will be hung in the cafeteria during the dance. Banners will be judged Wednesday morning, and points awarded! CANNED FOOD DRIVE We will be collecting canned goods and other non perishable items for the Colonial Manor Food Bank. The class that donates the most will have points added to their score! WHO HAS THE SPIRIT STICK?!? Each day, one faculty member will be holding the Spirit Stick. Clues will be sent via Instagram (@wdhs_studentcouncil) and Twitter (@WDHSWdhs). Students are NOT permitted to ask about the Spirit Stick until after the end of the school day. The first student to post a picture with the Spirit Stick and the faculty member of the day will earn bonus points for their class! And to get the teachers even MORE involved LORDS AND LADIES COMPETITION! Each day at lunch, there will be donation bags for each of those teachers entered in the WDHS Lord and Lady Competition. The male and female teacher who has raised the most money at the end of the week will be crowned at the pep rally! WDHS PTO HOMECOMING FOOD DONATION SIGN-UP: The Homecoming dance is Saturday, October 27 th and Volunteers are needed to provide Homecoming Dance Refreshments. DECA NEWS: DECA Needs Your Help!!! We are in need of judges at New Jersey DECA s Southern Blue Regional Competition on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. Each year the members of the various High Business Education Programs across the state of New Jersey participate in a Regional DECA competition. DECA provides an opportunity for students to compete in a variety of business fields. The areas of competition include, but are not limited to: Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Food Services, Fashion Merchandising, and Financial Services. To offer this unique opportunity to our students, we are in need of professionals who would be willing to serve as judges. This year, the Regional Competition will be held at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill on January 8 th from 7:45 AM until 2:30 PM. If you have never had the experience of serving as a judge for one of our conferences, you will be instructed upon arrival of your specific directions. In short, you will be listening to students present their ideas on various business situations, and then you will be asked to score the students out of 100 points. Assistance will be provided to you throughout the day with any questions you would have. World Language Honor Society and Club s News: At the next World Language Honor Society & Club meeting on Tuesday, October 23 rd, students will enjoy the 2016 animated Japanese film Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.) along with traditional Japanese cuisine. Bring $3. Students will also review officer job descriptions (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, publisher) for the upcoming November elections. Interested students should prepare a brief speech to be presented to The Club telling why they would be a good officer.
