Bonner, a forward from Whitesburg, Ga., scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half and ripped down eight of her 13 rebounds in the first half. Bonner was one of three Catamount players to post double figures in scoring followed by senior Justin Taylor s 13 points and junior Lindsay Simpson s 10 points. After Western Carolina scored the first point of the game, 1-of-2 free throws by Bonner, the Eagles poured in seven unanswered points to lead 7-1. NC Central relied on the three-pointer early as their first two buckets were treys. After a slow start, Western Carolina did outscore NC Central 33-31 in the second half. The Eagles also won the rebounding battle 44 to 41. It was a low turnover affair with both teams giving up the ball 10 times a piece. The Catamounts improve to 1-1 on the season and the Blue Bears fall to 1-1. Bonner s domination on the glass, with 26 rebounds, ties a single-season Catamount women s basketball record that has stood since 1977. The record was initially set by former Catamount Brenda Johnson against Mars Hill on Jan. 18, 1977. As stated above, it was Bonner s second straight double-double performance. She had 16 points and 13 rebounds in the 64-59 loss to North Carolina Central Nov. 14. Western Carolina played from behind until the final three minutes of the half. Trailing by six with 3:48 left, freshman Emily Hatfield nailed a lay-up and drained a free throw to complete the three-point play. Hatfield s scoring spurred a 9-0 run by the Catamounts to take the lead 24-23 capped off by a pair of free throws by Lane. Bonner hit 1-of-2 free throws to make the score 25-23 in favor of Western Carolina at the half. It was all Western Carolina in the second half as the Catamounts scored 41 second-half points. Livingstone scored 32. Sitting with five points and eight rebounds at the half, Bonner led WCU in the second half scoring 12 of her points and ripping down 18 of her rebounds in the final 20 minutes. Taylor scored almost half of the Catamounts points in the contest hitting eight field goals, three of them three pointers, and 8-of-17 from the field. On the glass, Taylor s 10 rebounds was a career-high with seven of them coming off the offensive glass. Presbyterian re-took the lead in the final two minutes of the half with a pair of free throws and a three-pointer by Rebecca Walker. Trailing by three, 23-20, Western Carolina knotted the game before the half as senior Makensey Campbell nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer. With Western Carolina leading 27-26 early in the second half, a pair of free throws by Presbyterian s Landers gave the Blue Hose the tie and the lead, 28-27. WCU would tie it one more time, 28 all, when Taylor hit a free throw. Presbyterian answered with a jumper by Cortney Storey, 30-28, and the Blue Hose would never trail again. Presbyterian could never build a double digit lead on Western Carolina but did register its largest lead of nine points, 37-28, with 14:38 left. Taylor scored 14 of her 27 points in the first half and tacked on 13 in the second half. She was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line and knocked down three of Western Carolina s eight three pointers in the game. It was the second time in as many games Taylor has scored 20 points as she had 20 points in the 51-44 loss to Presbyterian Nov. 22. Campbell came out scorching hot and led for the first seven plus minutes of the game. At the 13:32 mark, with the Lady Camels up by three, senior Makensey Campbell hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 10. A pair of free throws by Emily Hatfield gave WCU its first lead of the game, 12-10, at 12:24. Campbell would tie it for the second time off a lay-up by Makala Rouse. The lead would change nine more times in the first half before Western Carolina would secure the lead for good. Trailing 24-23, Taylor hit a jumper with 6:62 remaining and was fouled. She hit the free throw to complete the three-point play and WCU was up by two, 26-24. Campbell would tie it one more time, 26 all, on a pair of free throws by Kiera Gaines but Taylor answered again to give the lead back to the Catamounts. WCU would never trail again. In fact, Taylor s jumper, at 5:19 left in the first half, spurred an 11-1 run to have WCU lead 37-27 at half. Freshman Ace Easter Gave the Catamounts the 10 point lead heading into the locker room when she nailed a jumper at the buzzer.
