UALR Trojans (2-4, 0-0 Sun Belt) UALR (2-4) went 1-1 over the most recent reporting week, earning a 90-58 win over Southern Arkansas on Tuesday before falling 101-81 at Oklahoma on Friday. UALR s 21 assists against Southern Arkansas were a season high and the most since it totaled 21 in an 88-76 win over FIU at home last season (1/12/13). The Trojans also established new season highs in points (90), field goals made (35), field goal percentage (57.4 percent), three-point field goals made (10), three-point percentage (55.6 percent), steals (11) and blocks (8) against the Muleriders. On Friday, the Trojans couldn t slow down an OU offense that hit 33 of 71 shots from the floor (46.5 percent) and connected on 12 three-pointers. The loss at OU marked just the third time in head coach Steve Shields tenure a UALR team allowed 100 points in a game. It was the first time a Trojan team has allowed 100 points in regulation under Shields. Since being outrebounded 41 to 29 in its season opener vs. North Florida, UALR is +9 on the boards and has held a rebounding edge in three of five games. UALR has pulled down an average of 11.5 offensive rebounds per game and holds an 86-to-71 advantage in second-chance points on the year. UALR ranks second in the Sun Belt Conference in free throw shooting percentage (75.0 percent).the Trojans are averaging 19.0 made free throws per game through three games this season, up from 15.7 per game a year ago, and have outscored their opponents at the free throw line in four of six games. Senior Will Neighbour ranks in the top ten of the Sun Belt in scoring (18.3 ppg/8th), rebounding (7.7 rpg/5th), steals (1.5 spg - T-6th), FG percentage (58.3 percent/6th), 3FG percentage (50.0 percent/t-5th). Neighbour has reached double figures in scoring in six straight games to start the season. SUN BELT MEN S BASKETBALL TEAM-by-TEAM SCHEDULES and NOTES Arkansas State Red Wolves (5-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) Arkansas State has posted a current 5-2 record this season which represents the Red Wolves best start since the 2008-09 season when A-State won six of its first seven contests in head coach John Brady s first season. The 2008-09 squad would go on to compile a 13-17 overall record. The Red Wolves have scored over 85 points in their last three contests while compiling a 3-0 ledger. A-State is averaging 93.3 points per game (280 pts.) during that span with victories over Central Arkansas (99-56), at Lamar (95-89), and against Niagara (86-61). The last time A-State tallied a combined 280 or more points during a three-game period was in 2002-03 when the Red Wolves amassed a 287 points total in three consecutive wins versus Lyon College (120-55), against Lincoln College (103-48), and at Southern Mississippi (64-48). Senior guard Melvin Johnson III s eight three-point field goals made at Lamar last Saturday (11/30) was one shy of tying an A-State singlegame record. Johnson III, who connected on his first eight treys in the non-league contest and finished with a season-high 26 points, would have tied the school mark of nine three-pointers currently held by Adrian Banks vs. Troy (1/13/07), Tevoris Thompson vs. Lyon (12/7/02), and Dewarick Spencer against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (12/17/03). Senior guard Ed Townsel has surpassed the 900-career points mark after scoring nine points against Niagara (12/2). Townsel presently has accumulated 905 career points in 104 contests for an 8.7 points per game average during his A-State career. He also earned a steal in the Niagara contest to move into a current fifth-place tie with Antonio Harvey (1995-98; 139 career steals) among the Red Wolves all-time steals leaders. Senior forward Kirk Van Slyke is shooting 65.4% (17-26) from the floor in his last four outings and has made all 13 of his free throw attempts in that span. Van Slyke, who has shot at least 50 percent or higher in five games this season, had his season-opening six-game double-figure scoring string snapped after netting nine points versus Niagara (12/2). SUN BELT MEN S BASKETBALL Georgia State Panthers (2-5, 0-0 Sun Belt) Georgia State concluded a six-game road trip on Saturday and will now play three of its next four at home, starting with Young Harris on Wednesday. Redshirt-junior Ryan Harrow had one of the most impressive scoring performances in Georgia State history last week in the final game of the NIT Season Tipoff against Elon. Harrow scored 34 points, 19 in the second half, adding four assists and four rebounds to his total. The 34 points are the 24th-most scored in a single-game in school history, are the second most in the Sun Belt this year and were the most in the nation last Tuesday. In his first season with Georgia State, redshirt-junior Curtis Washington, a 6-9 transfer from Southern California, in showing that he could come close to averaging a double-double a game this season. Washington finished with a career-high 17 points against Elon in the final game of the NIT Season Tipoff and then grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds at FIU on Saturday. He is averaging 10.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game this year. In his first game with the Panthers, he tied a school-record with nine blocked shots. R.J. Hunter, who scored a GSU freshman record 527 points, has scored 109 points this year to surpass his dad Ron Hunter s career-total of 600 points when he played at Miami (Ohio). However, Ron still has bragging rights, helping Miami (Ohio) to three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Senior Devonta White scored his 1,000th career point in his last game last season and with 57 points scored this year, has 1,057 for his career. He needs 458 more points during his senior season to establish a new career school record. More remarkable is the fact he missed 10 games as a freshman with an ankle injury. The Cajuns (5-2) carry a three-game win streak into the contest after toppling 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Northwestern State, 105-74, on Nov. 27 in the Cajundome. Sophomore Shawn Long picked right up where he left off last spring, registering double-doubles in four of the first seven games to rank 14th nationally. He enters the Louisiana Tech game leading the Sun Belt in both rebounding (11.6) and offensive rebounding (7.1), ranked second in blocks (3.1) and offensive rebounds (4.4), third in scoring (20.3) and fifth in field goal percentage (.585). Cajuns head coach Bob Marlin has often pointed out that in order to win tournaments, players who normally have smaller roles need to step up to offset playing games on back-to-back days. Xavian Rimmer did so vs. Coastal Carolina, scoring a career-high 21 points and grabbing seven rebounds in the title game victory in the EA Sports Maui on the Mainland. Rimmer came back against Northwestern State last week to score 20 points, going six-for-nine from the field (five-forseven from three-point) in 25 minutes of action. After ranking sixth nationally last year with 18 double-doubles, sophomore Shawn Long has started the year with four doubledoubles in the first seven games, achieving two before halftime. He scored 23 points with 14 rebounds in the season-opening win over Louisiana College. He needed just 18:07 to get his first double-double of the year, grabbing his 10th rebound of the night (to go with 14 points at the time) as part of an 18-point, 11-rebound effort in the first half. Against Northwestern State on Nov. 26, Long had 16 points and 12 rebounds at halftime, accomplishing the double-double with 2:51 to play. He finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Long did not have a double-double by halftime during the 2012-13 season. DATE OPPONENT LOCATION TIME NOV. 9 LOUISIANA COLLEGE LAFAYETTE, LA. W, 101-67 NOV. 12 MCNEESE STATE LAFAYETTE, LA. SUN BELT MEN S BASKETBALL UT Arlington Mavericks (2-6, 0-0 Sun Belt) UT Arlington is on a five-game losing streak, the program s longest since losing six straight during the 2010-11 season. The Mavericks are 0-5 on the road for the first time since the 2002-03 season. Senior G Reger Dowell is 10th nationally in scoring at 23.6 points per game. Dowell scored career-high 35 (tied for 20th in UTA history) vs. Howard Payne and scored at least 20 in the first seven games of the season. That streak was snapped Friday at Texas with 17 points. Senior F Brandon Edwards is 14th nationally in rebounding at 10.6 per game. He has five double-doubles this season and had a streak of four in a row snapped at Texas. He began season 17th on UTA s all-time rebounding list and is now up to ninth. Edwards also scored a careerhigh 30 points at Eastern Michigan. Scott Cross is second all-time in wins at UTA with 124. Eddie Mc- Carter (162 from 1993-2006) is the leader. Cross passed Bob Snake LeGrande (122) on Nov. 12 vs. Samford. UT Arlington s 2-6 start is the worst in Cross eight years as head coach. The last time the Mavericks started 2-6 was the 2000-01 season under McCarter. At least four Mavs scored double figures in five games this season: Boise State (4), Samford (5), Howard Payne (4), Robert Morris (5) and Texas (4). Cross has used three starting lineups through eight games. Dowell, Edwards, junior G Lonnie McClanahan and junior F Vincent Dillard have started all seven games. The center position has seen three different starters: junior Stuart Lagerson (4 starts), freshman Jorge Bilbao (2) and junior Anthony Walker (2). The Bobcats beat Tulane 70-52 before beating Northern Kentucky 70-61. The Bobcats held Tulane to just 40 field goal attempts on Friday. That is the fewest attempts by a Texas State opponent since Dec. 1, 2009 when the team faced Texas A&M International. Texas State held three straight opponents to 61 points or fewer last week. The last time the team has accomplished that feat is Feb. 2-9, 2011 as the Bobcats went 3-0 during that stretch. The Bobcats seemed to find their range from long distance in Puerto Vallarta. The team hit a season-high 11 three-pointers against Northern Kentucky and followed it up with seven against Southeast Missouri. Texas State has found its offensive rhythm the last three games scoring 70 points or more in all three games of the Cure UCD Classic topped by a season-high 74 points against Southeast Missouri in the Cure UCD Championship game. SUN BELT MEN S BASKETBALL Troy Trojans (3-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) Troy finished last week 1-1, with a pair of tightly contested matchups. The Trojans began the week with a 60-53 loss at Central Arkansas. Troy got up by as many as eight points early in the second half but couldn t hold on, as turnovers and missed shots plagued the team. Antoine Myers led the way with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, but also led the squad with five turnovers. A return home brought back the winning ways, as Troy knocked off Alcorn State on Monday night, 73-70, in double overtime. Troy failed to hit a field goal in the extra minutes, going 0-of-10, but relied on the charity stripe to get the win, hitting 13-of-16 from the line. The Trojans needed some last second heroics from Wes Hinton twice to get the win. Hinton had the game-tying tip-in with four seconds remaining in regulation, as well as a free throw late in the first overtime to level the score. Myers had another tremendous performance, finishing with 19 points. He shot just 4-of-7 from the field, but hit 11-of-12 free throw attempts. Hinton and Kevin Thomas put up identical numbers, as both finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. All five starters scored in double figures. Monday was Troy s first double-overtime game since falling to Utah Valley at home last season, 86-82. Troy hadn t won a double-overtime game since taking down Louisiana-Lafayette on February 11, 2006, 75-73. DATE OPPONENT LOCATION TIME Nov. 8 at Ole Miss Oxford, MIss.
