Kids, Dogs & More Project Group Meets every 2nd & 4th Thursdays of the month, at 7:00 pm at Reunion Fairgrounds Buyers Plaques & Thank You Notes The buyers plaques and thank you note have arrived in the Extension Office. Remember you need to take your buyers plaque to your buyer as soon as you picked them up from the Extension Office. You will also need to write your thank you notes, put them in an unsealed, addressed envelope with a stamp and bring them to the Extension Office. After we check it off our list, we will mail your thank you note for you.
4-H Council and Adult Leader Meeting An Adult Leader & 4-H Council meeting will be held on March 23, 2015 at the Annex 1 meeting room. County Roundup Contest It is time to start thinking about spring contests. County Roundup offers a couple of great opportunities. Educational Presentation 4-H ers give a 6 to 12 minute presentation on a topic of their choice. This can be done with a partner. Share - The - Fun This is our talent show. Individuals or groups can perform short acts or skits in the following areas. 1. Celebrate 4-H 2. Choreographed Routine 3. Dramedy 4. Musical/Instrumental 5. Poetry/Prose 6. Solo/Band Performance 7. Vocal Our County 4-H Roundup will be on March 31, 2015. Entries are due by calling the Extension Office by March 24 th. District Roundup will be on April 18, 2015 in Meridian. If you have any questions or need help please let us know. Record Books Start recording information and taking pictures for your record book. Be sure to document your project well, whether it be an animal project, food and nutrition, etc. You ll need community service and leadership too! So volunteer to lead the pledge, set up for a 4-H club or project meeting or coordinate a community service project. Call us if you have questions. Record Books will be due on June 12, 2015. Text Messaging via Remind.com This year, we will be using the Remind.com software to send out text message reminders. To sign up to receive text messages this year, text the message @hoodco to 254-247-3498. We promise not to overwhelm you with text messages. We will use them for meeting reminders and any important reminders, such as livestock validation dates/deadlines, major project or contest entry deadlines, project kick-off events, etc..
DISTRICT 8 4-H RIFLE CONTEST Contestant Information District Contest Information Date: Saturday, May 2, 2015 Location: Leon County Gun Club 15295 County Road 224 Oakwood, TX 75855 Time: The Competitive Rifle Match Shooting will begin at 8:00am. (Shooting times will be staggered) The Provisional Light Rifle Match will begin following the completion of the Competitive Rifle Match. A more detailed shoot schedule will be distributed after receiving entries. Registration: Contact your Hood County Extension Office for entry information. Deadline to enter is April 15, 2015. Ellis County 4-H 3-D Archery Tournament April 4, 2015 Ellis County Sportsmans Club 470 W. HOOD COUNTY LIVESTOCK RAISERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS HCLRA is offering up to $6,000.00 in scholarships for the 2014-2015 school year. Application deadline is March 19, 2015 or turned in at the Hood County Livestock Raisers Association s monthly meeting held on March 19 th at 7:30pm at the Reunion grounds. Interviews will be scheduled accordingly. Applicants must complete or have completed 20 hours of community service for the HCLRA. Call the office if you are interested and we can get you the details. Horse Project Validation/Horseshow Just a reminder of you want to show at the District or State Horse Show you will need to validate your horse by April 15, 2015. There will be a late validation period between April 15 th & May 1 st, but the cost will go up. Be sure to start transferring papers on any registered horse you may have purchased now so it will be done in time. You will upload your pictures and registration paper on your 4-H Connect profile. Livestock News for March State Fair Lamb & Goat Validation If you are interested in showing a Lamb or Goat at the State Fair we need your validation and tag orders by April 8, 2015. Tags are $11 each. Beef Quiz Bowl If you are interested in participating in the Beef Quiz Bowl we will meet on March 9, 2015 at 3:00 pm at the Annex 1 meeting room. Livestock Project Help If you need help with your livestock project; Help with feeding, grooming, showing, etc. give Marty a call. We can set up a time to come out and visit. 2015 Howard College Lamb & Goat Camps We just received info for these two camps offered in Big Spring over the summer. These are great camps with tons of good information and speakers. The cost is $85 per person. You are responsible for your own lodging. Lamb Camp is June 7 th 9 th. and Goat Camp is June 14 th -16 th If you want more info, contact Marty. Livestock Raisers Association The HCLRA meets on the 3 rd Thursday of every month at 7:30 pm at the fairgrounds. We need more 4-H families to get involved with this group. They make the rules for the county show, up-keep the facilities and provide us a place and opportunity to show our projects. Next meeting is March 19, 2015..
Spring Contests The first round of Spring contests has district competitions in March. The second round of contests fill up the month of April, bleeding over into May. Below are some of the projects/contests offered in the Spring. You can find out more about these projects on the District 8 4-H website: http://d84-h.tamu.edu. If any of these interest you as a 4-H er or adult volunteer, please contact Marty or Brianne. We are happy to assist in any projects a 4-H er wants to do, but it takes adult leaders & volunteers to help us make it happen. District Rifle Contest Age Divisions: Junior, Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: May 2 nd, 2015 The District Rifle Contest is a competitive shooting contest with several different categories Seniors can qualify for State at the Texas 4-H Roundup. Livestock Judging Age Divisions: Junior/Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: April 25 th Livestock judging is the process of evaluating, selecting, placing, and learning the various livestock species cattle, sheep, goats and swine. Judging is the foundation of any 4-H livestock project. Horse Judging Age Divisions: Junior/Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: April 11 th Teams of three or four members individually evaluate multiple classes of 4 horses for composition and performance. Teams all compete at once, judging the same sets of classes. Both age groups give oral reasons on a specified number of predetermined classes. Entomology Age Divisions: Junior/Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: March 16 th The entomology project familiarizes youth with the insect world by studying, collecting and identifying various insects. Individuals or teams of 3-4 members individually identify insect specimens by scientific name. Leaders 4 Life (Parli. Pro) Age Divisions: Junior, Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: April 30 th The Leaders 4 Life Program provides resources to equip clubs in conducting high quality leadership training, parliamentary procedure training, and service learning activities. Range & Plant ID Age Divisions: Junior/Intermediate & Senior District Contest Date: April 10 th The range science project develops knowledge and skill in practical range and ranch management. The Plant ID contest familiarizes 4-H ers with native pasture plants & grasses. Teams of 3-4 compete individually judge scenarios and identify plant specimens. Ag Ambassadors Mark your calendar for June 4 th & 5 th for our Ag Ambassador program and tour. More information to come.

Here are a few more details: The rally is open to any intermediate and senior 4-H members. Entries can be individual only. The theme for 2015 is Bringing Texas to the Table. Recipes selected for entry should be a main dish item and tied to this theme, meaning they should feature Texas grown or raised ingredients. Videos should be no longer than eight (8) minutes.
