What is USTA JR. TEAM TENNIS? USTA Jr. Team Tennis is the largest youth tennis program in the country, helping girls and boys ages 6 to 18 get in the game, get on the court, and have a good time. Teams are coed and made up of at least six players, three boys and three girls, based on similar ages and skill levels. The emphasis is on skill development, fun, teamwork and friendly competition, all with the possibility of advancing to the Section and National Championships. Tennis is a sport you can play for life and Jr. Team Tennis lays the foundation for a lasting relationship. Teams may participate in one of the following age divisions: 8 and Under QuickStart (Beginner format using the 36 court and foam tennis ball) 10 and Under QuickStart (Beginner format using the 60 court and low compression ball) 12 and Under Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced 14 and Under Intermediate, Advanced 18 and Under Intermediate, Advanced Teams competing at the 12 & Under, 14 & Under, and 18 & Under intermediate and advanced skill levels may qualify for the Section Championship. Teams competing at the 14 & Under and 18 & Under intermediate and advanced skill levels may qualify for the National Championship. USTA Membership is required for all players participating in USTA Jr. Team Tennis programs. USTA Southwest Jr. Team Tennis Section Championships: August 10-12, 2012 in Tucson, AZ Players of the championship will receive 75 USTA Southwest Section ranking points per each individual singles and/or same gender doubles match won per round. USTA Southwest Section Junior Competition Here you will find information on ranking regulations, the points per round ranking system, endorsement to national events, special events, and tournaments along with the 2012 schedule. If you have any questions, please call the Junior Player Development Manager at 480-289-2351 x 106 or email juniorcomp@southwest.usta.com. Residency, Citizenship and Ranking Regulations 1. All persons ranked must hold a current USTA membership card. 2. Only persons who maintain a permanent residence within the boundaries of the Southwest Section (states of Arizona, New Mexico, and El Paso County, Texas) are eligible for ranking, endorsement and closed tournaments. A junior player, who lives with one or both parents, or a legal guardian, shall be considered a permanent resident of the location where he or she physically resides for the majority of the year, where he or she attends school and/or where he or she primarily engages in training and playing tennis. A junior player who is an established resident of the Southwest Section according to the aforementioned criteria, but is currently living apart from his or her parent(s) for reasons such as college, tennis academy or boarding school attendance, military involvement, etc. will continue to be considered a permanent resident of the Southwest Section a slong as his or her parent(s) maintain a permanent residence within its boundaries. For this purpose, permanent residency for the calendar year for the parent(s) is defined as a minimum of 184 days. Anyone moving into the section during the year must change their membership with the USTA membership department. The residency committee has the right to ask for proof of permanent residency. The burden of proof will be on the player/parent. 3. U.S. Citizenship - Only persons who are U.S. Citizens or are in possession of a Permanent Resident Card, commonly known as a "Green Card" are eligible for ranking, endorsement or closed tournaments. Junior rankings are calculated using the Points Per Round system. Refer to the Points Per Round Ranking System Regulations and Points Per Round point charts information below Tournament Eligibility Only players who are residents of the Southwest Section (as outlined in #2 of ranking regulations) and are U.S. citizens are eligible for prescribed sectional closed events including the Level 3 and 4 tournaments that count in national rankings. 2012 Age Eligibility 10s: Birth dates in 2001 until first day of the month of 11 th birthday; all birthdates in 2001 and younger 12s: Birth dates in 1999 until first day of the month of 13 th birthday; all birthdates in 1999 and younger 14s: Birth dates in 1997 until first day of the month of 15 th birthday; all birthdates in 1997 and younger 16s: Birth dates in 1995 until first day of the month of 17 th birthday; all birthdates in 1995 and younger 18s: Birth dates in 1993 until first day of the month of 19 th birthday; all birthdates in 1993 and younger 7
Player Regulations for Orange/Green/Yellow Progression Overview The new 10 & Under and 12 & Under systems are developmental divisions that should focus on participation and developing a players competitive skills through match play. The new system places emphasis on participation and promotes play in both Orange ball and Green ball events. The new system is structured to keep young players in Orange and Green ball events long enough to develop technically and tactically. The structure will enable a player to progress through participating in events with little emphasis on winning or losing. It is not a race to the Yellow ball. Orange Ball Division A. Orange Ball Eligibility 1. A player can start competing in Orange ball 10 & Under at any time, as long as the player has not reached the maximum age for the division. 2. A player may elect to move to Green ball 12 & Under by meeting one of the following criteria: a. Earn 10 participation points in singles sanctioned tournaments during a 12 month period and be at least 9 years old. b. Win the singles division of four Level 5 or higher Southwest Section tournaments and be at least 9 years old. 3. Participation points are earned as follows: a. One participation point may be earned by competing in any 10 & Under Orange ball singles sanctioned tournament. b. One participation point may be earned by completing any USTA Junior Team Tennis league season. c. One participation point may be earned by playing a cross sectional team event. 4. A player may elect to move to Green ball 12 & Under once he or she has reached 10 ½ years of age even if the above criteria has not been met. B. Orange Ball Match Formats 1. Matches will be played in accordance to the guidelines of 10 & Under tennis. 2. Court size: 60 foot court. 3. Racquet length: no longer than a 25 inch racquet. 4. Orange low compression balls. 5. Best two out of three short sets (first to 4 games) with a ten point tie-breaker in lieu of a third. Ad scoring applies. 8
C. Tournament Formats and Rankings 1. No rankings lists will be published. Participation point lists will be published to keep track of the number of points a player has accumulated. 2. It is recommended that Level 6 tournaments should be played in any non-elimination format such as a compass draw or round robin to ensure guaranteed competition. Players should be placed in flights with other players of a similar level. 3. It is recommended that the 10 & Under division at Level 6 tournaments be completed in one day. Rationale: The Junior Competition Committee emphasizes that it is not a "race" to the Green ball division. The priority is on maximizing participation and playing matches with the Orange ball. This helps in the fundamental development of the child and helps a child progress, as he or she gets older, with learning the correct technique and without picking up bad habits. Additionally, it places a player with correct equipment for his or her size, appropriate court size for his or her age, and a ball bounce that is in the strike zone for his or her height. A player can move up if he or she has satisfied the criteria, as it proves that he or she is ready to move up to the Green ball division. The Junior Competition Committee places no minimum age on when a child can play in the Orange ball Division. Players under the age of 8 are encouraged to play 8 & Under competition using the Red ball, however, they have the option of playing in 10 & Under Orange ball if they are ready or there is no available Red ball division. Green Ball Division A. Green Ball Eligibility 1. A player can start competing in Green ball 12 & Under when he or she has satisfied either of the criteria from the 10 & Under Orange ball division, or when the player has reached 10 ½ years of age. 2. A player may elect to move to Yellow Ball 12 & Under by meeting one of the following criteria: a. Earn 10 participation points in singles sanctioned tournaments during a 12 month period and be at least 10 years old. b. Win the singles division of four Level 5 or higher Southwest Section tournaments and be at least 10 years old. 3. Participation points are earned as follows: a. One participation point may be earned by competing in any 12 & Under Green ball singles sanctioned tournament. b. One participation point may be earned by completing any USTA Junior Team Tennis league season. c. One participation point may be earned by playing a cross sectional team event. 4. A player may elect to play in any Yellow ball age division, for which he or she is age eligible, only after completing the Green ball criteria listed above. 5. A player new to Southwest Section tournament play may elect to play in any Yellow ball age division, for which he or she is age eligible, as long as he or she has reached 12 years of age even if the above criteria has not been met. B. Green Ball Match Format 1. Matches will be played in accordance to the guidelines of 12 & Under tennis. 2. Court size: 78 foot court. 3. Racquet length: no longer than a 27 inch racquet. 9
4. Green low compression balls 5. Any USTA approved match format. C. Tournament Format 1. All Level 6 Southwest Section tournaments shall play Green Ball in the 12 & Under division. No Yellow ball for the 12 & Under division will be offered as an option in Level 6 tournaments. 2. Level 5 and above tournaments will use similar draw types as other divisions for Green Ball 12 & Under divisions. Rationale: The Junior Competition Committee believes that using the Green low compression balls, on a full sized court, will allow players to use the appropriate technique along with learning how to construct points better. In the Southwest, we play at altitude where the ball travels faster than at sea level. The Green ball will serve as a great transition tool to the Yellow ball and will enable players to have longer rallies at altitude. This improves a player s thinking skills and enables a player to learn how to construct points, a skill which can be transferred when the player starts to compete in Yellow ball tournaments. The length of time a player spends in the Green and Orange ball divisions is developmentally important. Players have the opportunity to accumulate one point for every tournament played and should be encouraged to enter as many tournaments as practical. Transitioning to 2012 Players caught in the middle Players may be eligible to move up to an appropriate division if they have exceptional and notable results. The Junior Competition Committee will decide based on results whether a player is able to move up in division. Rationale: The changes are designed to look forward to the future with the new generation of players. However, we know that there might be a few players "caught in the middle" during the transition phase, which is why the Junior Competition Committee will consider moving exceptional players. Conclusion The new Southwest Section 10 & Under and 12 & Under systems integrate the USTA National rule change and its philosophy of boosting participation, enabling kids to have more success, enabling small, young participants to have more fun, and developing a new generation of players with sound, fundamental techniques. The 10 & Under system preserves the integrity of Orange ball events; emphasizing participation, experience, the development of young tennis players and, most importantly, having fun! The 12 & Under system provides players with much needed experience and tactical awareness, which is imperative in a high altitude section as well as for overall technical development. The system of progression as a whole helps players gain success from a young age, whether they win or lose, by equating success with participation rather than winning or losing. 10
Administration The USTA Southwest Section office will monitor entry into the appropriate Orange, Green or Yellow ball divisions. Level 6 - Tournament Directors will be able to view the participation point list starting January 1 st 2012. It is their responsibility to make sure that the players entered are in the appropriate division according to their earned participation points as stated in rules above. Level 3, 4 and 5 All tournaments will be reviewed by the Southwest section. The JPDM will place players in the appropriate division according to their earned participation points as stated in the rules above. 11
Types of Lists and Publishing dates Standing Lists Standing lists are published weekly (typically at the beginning of each week). Singles and Doubles Standings will be based on a player's best Six (6) tournaments played in the last twelve (12) months. Endorsement Lists Endorsement lists are published frequently during each of the three endorsement segments. See the Endorsement Section for more information. Tentative final rankings Tentative final rankings for the calendar year will be published at the completion of the final tournament in 2012. Players/parents will then have 3 weeks from the publish date to send in corrections. Finals Rankings Final rankings will be published the first week of February 2013. These rankings for each age division shall include all players who have been age eligible for play in the division at any time during the year. Only points earned in the division will count towards ranking in that division. Player may be ranked in more than one age division during the year. Final Rankings will be based on the best Six (6) tournaments played during the calendar year. There are not any minimum requirements to receive a final ranking (except participating in one tournament and winning a match). Seeding Protocol The seeding protocol for the Southwest Section s designated events and tournaments that are Level 3, 4 or 5 for national ranking can be found on our website, in the Youth/Tournament Seeding area. Local tournaments are seeded by a local seeder or by the standings. 12
Points Per Round Ranking System Regulations 1. A player must win a round to receive any points for the tournament. Byes do not qualify as wins. 2. Withdrawals and walkovers qualify as wins for the advancing player and earn Points Per Round, but do not earn bonus points for significant wins. 3. Retirements qualify as wins for the advancing player and earn Points Per Round and bonus points for significant wins. 4. A player who advances because of a default that takes place before the commencement of the first point in the match or because the opponent is disqualified shall receive Point Per Round for advancing, but does not earn bonus points for significant wins. 5. A player who is defaulted from a tournament for code violations under the Point Penalty System or misconduct forfeits any points accumulated during the tournament. Players defaulted in singles only lose points accumulated for singles. 6. Points earned in a higher age division count towards a player's standing in the player's natural age division, as well as in the age division of the tournament itself (standings only, not final rankings). 7. Singles and Doubles Standings will use a Combined Ranking. This combined ranking will be based on a player's best Six (6) tournaments played in the last twelve (12) months. This combined ranking will use 100% of a player s singles points and 25% of a player s doubles points. 8. Final Combined Rankings will be based on the best Six (6) tournaments played during the calendar year. This final combined ranking will use 100% of a player s singles points and 25% of a player s doubles points. There are not any minimum requirements to receive a final ranking (except participating in one tournament and winning a match). Final rankings do not include any results from other age divisions. 9. All eligible players who have won at least one match in a USTA Southwest Section sanctioned tournament will have a standing. 10. Significant win/bonus points are based on the previous month s final standings. 11. Results of exhibitions, interscholastic and intercollegiate matches will not be considered for ranking purposes. 12. Results of Southwest Sanctioned tournaments and tournaments on the USTA National Schedule for the ranking year under consideration will provide the sole data for standings/ rankings. 13. Junior may play in any age division up until the month in which they age out of the division. Tournaments included in the Southwest Section Standings/Rankings All national tournaments on the USTA National Jr. Tournament Schedule that have a level distinction and use the Tournament Data Manager (TDM) software will count in a players standing/ ranking. Players must notify the Junior Player Development Manager if they play in one of these events. National Championships, National Opens, Copper Bowl and National Team events will automatically be included. 13

Player Result Level 1 Level 4 Level 5 Sweet 16 Southwest Section Point Charts Which point chart is used for each tournament? The point chart used to award points to a player is based on the type of draw the tournament utilizes. At the top of each chart, you ll see a list of the types of draws that the chart corresponds to. (For 10 and Under points please refer to pages 8-11) Grade 1, 2 & 3 - Level 6 tournaments: 12-18 age divisions in a level 6 tournament may qualify to earn Grade 1, 2 or 3 points. Grade 1: To qualify the sum of the top four ranked players in the draw, after the first round, must be less than or equal to 50. Grade 2: To qualify the sum of the top four ranked players in the draw, after the first round, must be less than or equal to 75. Grade 3: Tournaments not meeting Grade 1 or 2 standards. The standing list as of the week of the tournament will apply. Round Robins: Level 6 round robins are worth 70 points per win plus any bonus points Compass draw events: East Draw earns main draw points per round; all other directions earn consolation points. One match finals: Any draw with only a final of one match may earn a maximum of 110 points plus any bonus points. Shootout Formats are Level 6 - Grade 3 events. Flight #2 and lower of Shootouts use the Superset Chart Silver Draws in designates Level 5 Silver draws use the Level 6 Grade 3 point chart; Level 4 use the Level 6 Grade 2 point chart. USTA National Junior Ranking System Point Table Change In 2004, the United States Tennis Association adopted a Point Per Round Ranking System (PPR) to rank American juniors. Ranking Point Tables contain the points earned for wins at National Ranking Tournaments, which include all tournaments on the National Junior Tournament Schedule (NJTS) as well as 12 Section tournaments designated by each USTA Section. While minor adjustments have been made to the Point Tables periodically since 2004, effective January 1, 2012 the Tables will be substantively changed. The new Tables, which were unanimously approved by the USTA Junior Competition Committee in September with the support of the USTA Player Development Staff, have been revised in two significant ways: The point distribution has changed so that ranking points are awarded in a more progressive manner. Players who advance to the later rounds of a tournament will receive substantially more points than players who lose in the earlier rounds. The total points earned for winning a Level 1 National Ranking tournament, such as a USTA National Championship, have been significantly increased. The points earned for winning Level 4 and Level 5 tournaments have been reduced slightly, but remain higher than when the PPR system was introduced in 2004. Why has the USTA adjusted the Point Tables? A goal of the USTA is to promote and reward earned advancement. The progressive nature of the new Ranking Point Tables does this in two ways. Within a Level, the distribution of points among each round s finishers ensures that players who advance to the later rounds will earn the majority of the points available in a tournament. Across Levels (1-5), the distribution of points for reaching equivalent rounds ensures that players who win at higher levels earn a proportionately greater number of points. By rewarding advancement in these ways, which is supported by American college coaches, it is anticipated that the accuracy of the USTA rankings will be enhanced. In addition, because the new Tables award fewer points for winning fewer rounds, the incentive to travel outside one s Section or region will be reduced and will encourage play closer to home. Will there still be a combined ranking of singles and doubles? There will be no changes to the combined ranking. Under the new Point Tables, players who compete in both singles and doubles and advance to the later rounds of events will earn progressively more ranking points reflecting their competitive success. Who will this change affect? The change will affect every player who competes in tournaments that count for national ranking. This is a very positive change for players and will reward players who advance to the later rounds of these tournaments. How will Section tournaments that count for national ranking be affected? The ranking points earned at the 12 tournaments each Section designates as Levels 3, 4 and 5 will be reduced. This change is an acknowledgment of the inherent flaw in having 17 Sections of different sizes and strengths feeding into one national ranking system. Although reduced, the adjusted ranking points remain higher than the points earned at these tournaments when the PPR system was introduced in 2004. 18

Endorsement, National Championships and Summer National Team Events All juniors who hope to be endorsed for participation in National Surface Championships and Team Events in 2012 should read this information very carefully. Make sure you understand the procedures and regulations for endorsement. It is the responsibility of the player to initiate as well as secure an endorsement. Questions regarding endorsement should be directed to the Junior Development Manager at juniorcomp@southwest.usta.com What is Endorsement? Endorsement is the Section s approval of a junior player to play National Events based on ranking and meeting the section s endorsement requirements. The draws for the USTA's Hard Court Nationals, Clay Court Nationals, Spring Nationals, Winter Nationals and Summer National Team events are limited and are based on the standings lists at the end of a prescribed segment. In the Southwest Section, the schedule is broken down into 3 segments. Each segment has a date range in which tournament results will be used to calculate the Points per Round for a player. All players who have one win in an eligible tournament and accumulate points will appear on the endorsement list. Below you will find more information on each endorsement segment. National Junior Tournament Schedule The schedule contains all national events and their dates, age eligibility, ranking and standing requirements and additional tournaments of national stature that do not require sectional endorsement. The national schedule can be found online at USTA.com. Nationals Championships The USTA National Junior Tournament Schedule includes National Championships, National Opens, regular national tournaments and summer national team events. This includes four major tournaments called the National Championships. These top tier events Spring (Easter Bowl), Clay Courts, Hard Courts, and Winter each have 12, 14, 16, and 18 age categories. Players gain access into Nationals by endorsement through sectional endorsement OR a top three finish in the preceding National Open OR being on Top16 List OR as an endorsed alternate. Alternates The Southwest Section will endorse all players with at least one win and accrued points in the event that our players can gain entry via there seeding/selection list standing as an alternate or by filling a remaining vacancy. This list is used to fill in remaining spots in the draw not filled by sectional quotas, wildcards and national opens. All alternates are ordered based on the national seeding/selection list. The draws for these tournaments are made a week in advance. Alternates will be informed shortly thereafter. Often, alternates are accepted after player selection has been made and/or at the last minute to fill spots resulting from last minute withdrawals. Withdrawals When you accept entry to one of the National tournaments or Team events, it is your responsibility to appear. If you drop out before or after the entry deadline, notify the Junior Development Manager immediately. Waiver Policy Since ranking and endorsement lists are calculated using Points per Round, there are no waivers. Summer National Team Events Each section fields team for summer national competition. Below are the different teams that will be fielded. The USTA SW Section Jr. Competition Committee has the discretion to allow a player to play on more than one team. The lineup for singles play will be based on the player's endorsement standing only. The USTA Southwest Section provides a coach for the team. More information will be sent in March to prospective players. 22
Endorsement Information Sheet Players interested in receiving information on Summer National Championships and Summer National Teams need to turn in an Endorsement Information Sheet. A copy of the information sheet will be emailed out in March to all prospective participants. You may also find a copy at. Make sure you turn in your Player Endorsement Information Sheet to the Southwest office no later than June 1. Endorsement information/entry forms for the team events will be e-mailed in May. It is vital that you include a current email address on your endorsement info sheet. It is advised that you return your completed team entry forms with fees to the Eric Mitchell at the Southwest Junior Closed to avoid missing the deadline. It is highly recommended that you send your entry and money certified or priority mail anytime thereafter. Endorsement Protocol For all segments, a player's best five (5) tournaments played during the segment will be used to determine his/her endorsement standing. A player s combined ranking will use 100% of the player s singles points and 25% of the player s doubles points. 2011-2012 Spring Endorsement - 9/1/2011 through 3/5/2012 Special Note: The Boys' and Girls' 18 divisions for this segment will run from 9/4/10 through 2/28/11. USTA SOUTHWEST JUNIOR SUSPENSION POINT SYSTEM The USTA Southwest Section Suspension Point System is in effect at all sanctioned junior tournaments in the section and will be used in all singles and doubles matches (main draw, consolation, and qualifying). It applies to conduct: during matches, during tournament activities, at tournament facilities and at facilities such as hotels, dormitories, and homes where players stay. Persons authorized to file suspension point reports with the referee and Junior Player Development Manager (JPDM) are: tournament committee members (tournament director, tournament Referee etc.), deputy referee, on court umpires, club or hotel managers and the JPDM. All of the above persons will report only on violations personally witnessed by them. The USTA Southwest Section has a Zero-tolerance policy for junior withdrawals and defaults. Illness, injury, and/or personal emergency are not accepted for withdrawals and defaults. All withdrawals and defaults will be penalized under the suspension point system. Notice of Points Accrued The JPDM will inform affected players and their parents when eight (8) and ten (10) suspension points have been accrued. Note: Due to delay in receiving documentation, a player may accumulate additional points before being notified when he or she is at 6, 8 or 10 points. Therefore, all players must rely on their own records of suspension points to avoid actual suspension. Players and parents can request copy of that player s suspension point record to review for discrepancy at any time. Any disputes must be in writing and addressed to the JPDM and Sportsmanship Committee at the SWS Office. Suspension # Period Comment 1st Suspension 3 months Suspension with the accumulation of 10 points within a 12 month period. 2nd Suspension 6 months After the first suspension, player s record will be cleared and the player shall be suspended for a second time with the accumulation of 6 points or more within another 12 month period. Subsequent Suspensions Minimum of one year or up to the duration of the junior s career If a player receives 6 points within the 12 month period immediately following the second suspension (and any suspensions subsequent to the second suspension), the player shall be suspended from competing in the USTA sanctioned events for a period to be determined by the Sportsmanship committee. The suspension period shall not be less than one year and may be up to the remainder of the player s junior career. Penalty for all Suspensions No endorsement to National Surface championships or National Team Events. No participation in USTA Sanctioned tournaments, USTA Jr. Team Tennis or Section Sponsored Camps. 24

The Referee, Umpires, Officials, Tournament Committee Members and the Junior Player Development Manager are authorized to eject all persons engaging in any of the infractions listed above. Such ejection will be documented and forwarded to the Junior Player Development Manager and the SWS Junior Sportsmanship Committee for review and the imposition of further penalties if warranted. Southwest Section Special Events Listed below are some of the special events planned for 2012. Eligible players will be contacted directly about those additional competitive opportunities. Nike Jr. Tour - The Nike Junior Tour (NJT) is a worldwide series of junior singles tournaments for Boys and Girls in the 12 and 14 age groups. There are currently 28 countries participating in the NJT, representing over 60,000 players. Former NJT International Masters participants include Rafal Nadal, Juan Martin Del Potro and Tomas Berdych. The winner(s) of this event will be invited to compete at the NJT USA National Masters in September. The NJT USA National Masters is a Level II USTA National event. Nike provides round trip transportation, food and lodging for the winner(s) (B14, B12, G14, G12) plus one team coach. The NJT USA National Masters winners advance to play in the NJT International Masters in December. Expenses for the International Masters are paid for by Nike. AGE ELIGIBILITY: NJT USA play leads to the NJT International Masters where 28 countries participate. Therefore, to be eligible for the NJT USA National Masters and the NJT International Masters, players must meet the ITF (International Tennis Federation) age eligibility cutoff date of December 31st. Example: If you are currently 12, but will turn 13 on or before December 31, 2012, you may play in the Section Championship in the 12's but WOULD NOT BE ELIGIBLE to compete in the 12 s at the NJT National Masters at Stanford or the International Masters. Players should consider the ITF age eligibility to determine which age group to enter if they want to be eligible to go on to the NJT USA National Masters or International Masters. The USTA Southwest Section s qualifying tournament will the Southwest Jr. Closed in June 2012. The sectional champions will represent the USTA Southwest Section at the NJT USA National Masters to be held in September. 10 and Under Section Challenge ( Slammin 10 s ) Dates: September/October of 2012 Site: Dallas, Texas Info: Competition between USTA Sections. Selection: Priority goes to Clay Court Nationals and 16 Intersectional's participation first Billie Jean King World Team Tennis Nationals Dates: August 2012 Site: San Diego, CA Info: This 18 and under team event includes 16 teams from across the nation competing using the World Team Tennis format. The event has proven to be very competitive and fun. Selection: Invitation letters will be sent to the top players in the 18 &16 and under age divisions. The team is comprised of 3 boys and 3 girls. Southwest Little Mo ID#750003812 Dates: May 2012 Site: Scottsdale Ranch Park, AZ Info: This tournament is named after Maureen "Little Mo" Connolly, who was the first woman to win the Grand Slam when she was only 18 years old. This tournament has 11, 10 and 9 year old divisions. The eight quarterfinalists in each age group from the Southwest Sectional will advance to the Regionals, with a chance to advance to nationals. Tournament Play for Novice/Intermediate Players These tournaments are un-sanctioned (do not count in USTA Southwest Rankings) and are designed for beginning to intermediate players as an introduction to tournament play. Phoenix Area 2012 All About Tennis Junior Satellites The Central Arizona Junior Satellites are held throughout the Phoenix area, culminating with the Grand Masters Invitational in December. Satellites are for players with little tournament experience. These tournaments guarantee players two matches. Tournaments Mesa s Gene Autry Tennis Center offers junior round-robin, superset and compass draw non-elimination tournaments where players are grouped by age and ability. Ability groups range from 10 and under novice through high school varsity and USTA ability players. It s a great way to gain tournament experience for less experienced players and advanced players wanting to work on their game in tournament conditions. Tournaments are played in a 3 hour time period. Entry deadline is 8pm on the Monday prior to the tournament. QuickStart Tennis is an exciting new play format for learning tennis, designed to bring kids into the game by utilizing specialized equipment, shorter court dimensions and modified scoring, all tailored to age and size.
