2007-08 U P S T A T E George takes Spartans to the dance 56 Women s Basketball History & Records 2007 Spartan Women s Basketball www.upstatespartans.com

A Spartan History USC Upstate Athletics: A Winning Tradition Women s Basketball has racked up more than 400 wins in 30 seasons and made four trips to the DII Dance A School s History When Spartanburg General Hospital announced it was phasing out its diploma program for registered nurses in 1967, a citizens committee requested that Spartanburg be included in the University of South Carolina system to avert a serious healthcare problem. The Spartanburg Regional Campus, as it was first known, opened its doors in the fall of 1967 to 177 students on the first floor of the Spartanburg General Hospital nursing residence. Enrollment continued to increase, which resulted in the school becoming a four-year university in 1975. In 1994, the University began offering graduate degrees. Today s thriving campus boasts 280 acres and an enrollment of 4,800 students. That increasing growth in the school, from 177 students just 40 years ago to nearly 5,000 students today, has been reflected in a similar rapid growth in the athletic department. The Early Years Athletics became an immediate part of the school s history, as the team sponsored a variety of sports while the school was a junior college, including bowling, tennis and men s basketball. By 1974, the athletic department was ready to take a step forward in its commitment to athletics when USC Spartanburg became a four-year university, joining the NAIA for men s athletics and the AIAW - Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women - in women s sports. Volleyball and women s basketball soon entered the landscape of athletics at the college. Linda Sloan was the first women s basketball coach at USC Spartanburg, leading the Lady Rifles to a 4-16 record in 1976-77. Emily Myers took over the program the next season and led the Lady Rifles to their first winning season, as the team finished 10-9. Julie Pridgeon led the team during the early years on the court, becoming the first 1,000-point scorer in the history of the school in 1980. Playing mainly similar small schools in South Carolina during the early days of the program, the Lady Rifles racked up three winning seasons in the first six of the program before the AIAW desolved in 1982 when the NCAA and NAIA both incorporated women s sports under their umbrellas. The women s programs at Spartanburg joined the men in the NAIA, competing in District Six. The NAIA Years The Lady Rifles greeted the NAIA with a 14-8 mark under first-year head coach Kim Buford in 1982-83. After struggling the next two years, Buford brought in the all-time scoring average leader Gwen Proctor, in 1985 and the team took off, winning 41 games in the next two seasons, including 22 in 1985-86. Buford left the Lady Rifles, after taking the team to a 19-8 mark in 1986-87, moving on to the NCAA at the University of Tampa. The History of an Identity: Upstate Athletic Logos The first athletic teams at USC Upstate were fielded in 1967. Called the Fighting Bantams, those early teams wore garnet and black and played their basketball games in a local junior high school gymnasium. In 1970-71, the University took its first of two steps to distinguish itself from USC Columbia by changing the school colors from garnet and black to purple and white. A year later, the University changed its nickname to the Spartan Rifles in honor of a local militia unit that played an integral part in the Revolutionary War, winning an important victory at the Battle of Cowpens. Though the official nickname was the Spartan Rifles, the athletic teams were known as just the Rifles. The USCS athletic teams were known as the Rifles from 1971-2004. In 2004, the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees passed a resolution to rename the inversity in Spartanburg as the University of South Carolina Upstate. In a move to help better brand the University and its image, the official nickname of the University was changed to the Spartans. The name continues to pay homage to the militia unit known as the Spartan Rifles, though the nickname Buford s move foreshadowed the USC Spartanburg s athletics department s move to the NCAA as well, as the department spent just three more seasons in the NAIA before joining the NCAA Division II and the Peach Belt Conference in 1990. Entering DII Head coach Tammy Holder, currently an assistant coach at South Carolina, was given the opportunity to coach the Lady Rifles in their first year in the Peach Belt and led the team to an 18-10 mark and earned the first Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year honor. The transition to the NCAA was made infinitely easier by the established presence of the program s two all-time leading scorers, Jametriah Hannah and Deedra Howard. At the end of the season, though, Holder left for a Division I coaching job at Richmond. The team struggled in 1991-92, but the hiring of Peggy Sells at the end of the season started the most successful period in school history. Sells Years Peggy Sells, hired at the age of 23, was the youngest head coach in the NCAA when she was hired in 1992, but she immediately proved herself, leading the Lady Rifles to a 28-3 record and a 16-0 slate in the Peach Belt Conference. Though they were knocked off in the championship game of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, the Lady Rifles still earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, winning the school s first NCAA Tournament game, a 71-69 victory over St. Augustine. The Lady Rifles continued to shine under Sells, has been modified to emphasize the first portion of the militia unit s name instead of the last part. Though the name of the University and the nickname of its athletic teams have changed, the colors remain hunter green, white, and black. In 1979-80, the school colors were changed to green and white. Over the years, the originial Kelly green has been transformed to the modern day Hunter green and black has now been added as a complementary color. winning both the Peach Belt league and tournament titles during the next two years. Two players earned All-American honors during the period, in Howard in 1993 and Hannah in 1995. After the third Peach Belt title and 80 wins, Sells became the third Spartanburg coach to leave for a bigger school, heading to Division I and Virginia Commonwealth University. A New Era in Upstate Athletics Though the Lady Rifles struggled for much of the rest of the 90s and the early part of the new century, with the coming of the school and mascot s name changes in 2004, the USC Upstate Spartans engaged in a remarkable turnaround under first-year head coach Tammy George. George, with help from Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Yakeeshia Ross, led the Spartans to a 16-14 record and an appearance in the Peach Belt Tournament semifinals in 2006. The Spartans also earned an NCAA Tournament berth, their first since Sells left the school in 1995. After just one more season in Division II, George will now lead the Spartans into Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference. Now, the little school that began in 1967 has reached the penultimate level of amateur athletics in the United States, with George s Spartans taking the court in tradition-rich arenas like Memorial Coliseum at the University of Kentucky and at the home floors of Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. The new challenge is the stiffest yet for the Spartans women s basketball team, but after more than 400 wins in the AIAW, the NAIA and Division II, the Spartans have a history of success to build on. 2007 Spartan Women s Basketball www.upstatespartans.com 57

During the Spartans period in the AIAW, there was one 1,000-point scorer, Julie Pridgeon (1976-80) while Yvette Moore (1981-85) started her career in the AIAW and finished it in the NAIA. Moore held the school record for points for four seasons before Dawn Bowden surpassed it. Bowden held the mark for just three years before Jametria Hannah broke the record in 1992 and Hannah has held the mark ever since. In all, two players crossed the mark during the Spartans period in the NAIA while two others (Hannah and Howard) started their careers at Upstate before it became an NCAA member in 1990. Five Spartans scored 1,000 points while USC Upstate was a member of the NCAA Division II. 1,450 points 3-Point Year GP GS Min Avg FG FGA Pct FG FGA Pct FT FTA Pct Off Def Tot Avg PF FO Ast TO Blk Stl Pts Avg 1985-86 30 8 551 18.4 61 164.372 - - - 56 88.636 - - 163 5.4 - - 46-13 30 178 5.9 1986-87 29 - - - 117 267.438 - - - 56 81.691 - - 211 7.3 - - 46-6 50 290 10.0 1987-88 25 24 774 31.0 162 363.446 49 123.398 81 115.704 - - 206 8.2 46 0 51 66 10 39 454 18.2 1988-89 28 27 960 34.3 192 416.462 73 174.420 71 101.703 73 131 204 7.3 59 1 87 100 15 39 528 18.9 TOTAL 112 59 228520.4 532 1210.440 122 297.411 264 385.686 73 711 784 7.0 105 1 230 166 44 158 145012.9 Yvette Moore (1981-85) 1,443 points Year GP FG FGA Pct FT FTA Pct Rebs Avg Ast Pts Avg 1981-82 20 65 129.504 47 85.553 174 8.7 5 177 8.9 1982-83 22 129 274.471 91 133.684 208 9.5 5 349 15.9 1983-84 25 153 331.462 115 191.602 249 10.0 7 421 16.8 1984-85 25 185 430.430 126 217.581 301 12.0 29 496 19.8 TOTAL 92 532 1164.457 379 626.605 932 10.1 46 1443 15.7 70 2007 Spartan Women s Basketball www.upstatespartans.com
