Game #10, Home Game #6 Saturday, April 15th Durham Bulls Athletic Park 6:35 PM Gwinnett Braves (5-4 / 2nd / 2 GB) vs. Durham Bulls (7-2 / 1st) LHP Andrew Albers (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Chase Whitley (0-0, 3.00) Tonight s Game The Durham Bulls look to bounce back from just their second loss of the season tonight, as they take on the Gwinnett Braves in game two of the three game series. The Bulls remain on top of the International League South Division standings with a 7-2 record, but the Braves have closed the gap to within two games by winning their last four contests. Last Night The Bulls fell victim to a big inning Friday night, as the visiting Gwinnett Braves snapped the Bulls four-game with streak with a 6-5 final in front of a season-high 9,640 fans at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Bulls entered the sixth inning leading the Braves 4-1, before the home team committed three errors to help Gwinnett score five runs, two unearned, to take a 6-4 lead they would never relinquish. The loss marked just the second defeat this season for Durham, with both of them coming against Gwinnett. Déja Vù Defeat Durham lost for just the second time this season Friday night, with both defeats coming at the hands of the Gwinnett Braves and starting pitcher Lucas Sims. Prior to last night, Sims and the Braves also knocked off the Bulls on 4/9, when the lefty held Durham to one run over five innings leading to a 4-2 final score. Bombs Away Curt Casali s opposite field, 3-run homer Friday night as the 12th long ball hit by the Bulls this season, the most in the IL. Durham has now hit at least one long ball in six straight games and eight of their nine contests overall this year. Big Bats in the Bull City The bats in the Bulls lineup have been the driving force behind Durham s hot start to the season, with the club currently leading the IL in Runs (56), RBI (52), HR (12), and 3B (5). The club also ranks among the league leaders in SLG (2nd,.434), SB (2nd, 10), TB (3rd, 138), and BB (3rd, 36). Strikeout Leaders...Again The Durham pitching staff finds itself in very familiar territory to start the season, with the club once again leading the IL in strikeouts with 97. The Bulls have paced the league in Ks each of the past five seasons, including a league-record 1,287 in 2016. Death by Golden Sombrero Third baseman Patrick Leonard had reached base safely in all eight of the Bulls games this season prior to last night, when the hot-hitting infielder finished 0-4 with 4 K. Who Knew Wins Were This Easy? Reliever Justin Marks has been the main benefactor of all the Bulls victories to start the year, with the left-hander already sporting a league-best 3-0 record. Those three wins are already enough to tie the season totals of three seperate seasons for the former starter. Marks career-high of eight wins, set with the Wilmington Blue Rocks in 2011, seems well within his sights. The Fort Can Walk Mike The Fort McKenry drew his eighth walk of the season in Friday night s game, tying him for the league lead in free passes. The Tennessee native s keen eye at the plate has also resulted in a.520 OBP, good enough for 3rd in the IL. Super Shane s Super Debut OF Shane Peterson was promoted to Tampa Bay Friday morning, leaving the Bulls while leading the IL in Doubles (4) and Extra-Base Hits (6) while batting.258 with eight RBI. The move paid instant dividends for Durham s parent club, as Peterson clubbed a 2-run homer in his first at-bat en route to finishing 2-5 with 3 RBI. Top System Showcased in Gwinnett The Atlanta Braves No. 1 ranked minor league system in well represented with their Triple-A affiliate, as Gwinnett begins the season with five Top 30 prospects. SS Ozzie Albies (No. 1 Atlanta prospect / No. 9 overall) leads the way, along with LHP Sean Newcomb (#5 / #77), RHP Lucas Sims (#18), 3B Rio Ruiz (#22), and RHP Luke Jackson (#26). Top Prospects in Durham The Bulls Opening Day roster includes nine of the Top 30 prospects for Tampa Bay on the squad, as well as three listed among the Top 100 prospects in MiLB. The top-flight talent includes Willy Adames (Rays No. 1, MiLB No. 21), Jake Bauers (#4/#76), Casey Gillaspie (#5/#100), Chih-Wei Hu (#8), Jake Faria (#9), Jaime Schultz (#15), Ryne Stanek (#16), Taylor Guerrieri (#18), and Ryan Yarbrough (#24). Third Time s The Charm Manager Jared Sandberg returns to Durham for his third year at the helm of the Bulls in 2017. The 39-year-old former big leaguer has been unable to get the Bulls to the postseason in his first two years as manager, finishing with a 74-40 mark in 2016 before going 64-80 in 2017. The Bulls have never gone three straight years without making the playoffs since joining the International League in 1998. 17 BY THE NUMBERS Place in Southern Div 1st Games Behind (Division) 0.0 Games Behind (WC) 0.0 Current Streak L1 Home 4-1 Road 3-1 vs. RHP (starter) 6-2 vs. LHP (starter) 1-0 vs. South Division 7-2 vs. North Division 0-0 vs. West Division 0-0 Day 0-1 Night (5:05+) 7-1 Extra Innings 1-0 Shutouts 1-0 One-Run Games 1-0 Three or fewer 3-2 Four or more 3-0 Scoring First 5-1 Opponent Scores First 2-1 Leading after 6 7-0 Trailing after 6 0-2 Tied after 6 0-0 Series Openers 2-1 Series Finales 1-1 Rubber Matches 0-0 Doubleheader Games 0-0 Sweep/Swept/Split 0/0/0 2-Game Series (W/L/T) 0/0/0 3-Game Series 0-0 Sweep/Swept 0/0 4-Game Series (W/L/T) 2/0/0 Sweep/Swept 1/0 5-Game Series 0-0 Sweep/Swept 0/0 Monday 1-0 Tuesday 1-0 Wednesday 1-0 Thursday 2-0 Friday 1-1 Saturday 1-0 Sunday 0-1 April 7-2 May 0-0 June 0-0 July 0-0 August 0-0 September 0-0 2017 BULLS vs. BRAVES Overall 3-2 DBAP 0-1 Coolray Field 3-1 2016 Head-to-Head 13-9 BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,384-6,098 International League 1,446-1,274 Upcoming Schedule and Probable Starters Date Opponent Durham Starter Opponent Starter time Sunday, April 16th vs. Gwinnett Braves RHP Jake Faria (1-0, 3.86) RHP Aaron Blair (1-1, 7.88) 5:05 pm Tuesday, April 18th @ Indianapolis Indians RHP Chih-Wei Hu (1-0, 1.64) TBD 7:05 pm Wednesday, April 19th @ Indianapolis Indians TBD TBD 1:35 pm Thursday, April 20th @ Indianapolis Indians LHP Ryan Yarbrough (0-2, 5.56) TBD 11:05 am Today s game will be broadcast on Buzz Sports Radio: 96.5 FM in Durham and 99.3 FM in Raleigh
