LSU dropped a heartbreaker to No. 2 Penn State in the opening weekend. In addition, LSU has held seven of its 19 opponents to under a.100 hitting percentage. The best hitting percentage against the Tigers this season was by No. 8 Florida at.304, one of only four teams to post hit over.200 against LSU. Conversely, Nicholls State failed to get into positive figures on Aug. 26, posting the lowest opponents hitting percentage against the Tigers under head coach Fran Flory and overall since 1991. In addition, Ole Miss hit an even.000 against LSU on Sept. 29, the fourth lowest mark against LSU under Flory in her tenure. SENIORS ACCOMPLISH FIRSTS The 2006 Tiger seniors accomplished something they had never done in their careers as LSU knocked off No. 13 Tennessee and Kentucky on the road to open SEC play. The Tigers had not defeated the Lady Vols in Knoxville since 2001, when the current senior class was juniors in high school. It had been longer since LSU had knocked off the Wildcats in Lexington, dating back to 1999, when the seniors were freshmen in high school. In both wins, the Tigers had to come from behind as LSU fell behind by two games against Tennessee, and dropped the first game in the loss to Kentucky. There are only two SEC venues the seniors have not won in - the CAVE at Alabama, where the Tigers lost 3-1 this season, and the O Connell Center at Florida, where LSU lost 0-3. TIGERS TIED BEST START IN SCHOOL HISTORY Starting the season at 15-1, LSU tied the 1978 and 1991 teams for the best start in school history. The Tigers won 13 straight matches after dropping a five-game decision to No. 2 Penn State on Aug. 26 in the Tiger Invitational, which was tied for the third longest winning streak in LSU volleyball history, before losing to Alabama on Oct. 8. MIKULIK RECORDS FIFTH MOST DIGS IN A FOUR-GAME MATCH Against Alabama on Oct. 8, Kassi Mikulik recorded 26 digs, which is the fifth most digs in a four-game match in LSU history. The mark was five behind the school record of 31 digs, which was recorded by Luciana Reis against Kansas in 1993. It tied Mikulik s career record and was the second time Mikulik recorded 26 digs in a match in 2006 after also hitting that mark against Ole Miss on Sept. 29. MIKULIK NAMED SEC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Kassi Mikulik was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 2. For the week, she led the Tigers to a 2-0 record to extend their winning streak to 12 straight. The senior libero recorded an incredible 6.50 digs per game for the week. Against Ole Miss, she posted the second most digs in a three-game match in school history with 26. She came back with 13 digs against Mississippi State. TIGERS POST 10TH MOST DIGS IN A THREE-GAME MATCH Against Ole Miss on Sept. 29, LSU recorded 70 team digs, the 10th most digs in a three-game match in school history. The mark was 25 behind the school record of 95 digs, which was recorded against Mississippi State on Oct. 13, 2000. MIKULIK RECORDS SECOND MOST DIGS IN THREE-GAME MATCH Against Ole Miss on Sept. 29, Kassi Mikulik recorded 26 digs, which is the second most digs in a three-game match in LSU history. The mark was four behind the school record of 30 digs, which was recorded by Luciana Reis against Arkansas State in 1993. It also marked the most digs recorded by a Tiger in any match since Mikulik posted 26 digs in a five-game match against Kentucky on Nov. 11, 2005. DEGIROLAMO NAMED CVU NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK; SEC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Lauren DeGirolamo was named the Collegiate Volleyball Update National Player of the Week on Sept. 19 after earning SEC Freshman of the Week honors on Sept. 18. Against the Lady Vols on Friday, DeGirolamo notched 16 kills and a career-best 10 blocks, recording her first career double-double. The Tigers fell behind 2-0 before rallying to win the final three games to earn the victory. Two days later against Kentucky, she tied her career best with 10 blocks against the Wildcats, while adding 14 kills as LSU rallied after losing the first game to defeat Kentucky, 3-1. LSU jumped out to the early 2-0 lead before the Nittany Lions came back to win the final three games of the match for the win. Defensively, however, both teams were stellar, with the Nittany Lions recording 18.5 blocks and 86 digs compared to 16 blocks and 77 digs for LSU. Despite the loss, it marked the first time the Tigers pushed a team ranked as high as No. 2 to five games in the program s history. The last time LSU played a team ranked as high as No. 2, the Tigers lost to No. 2 Florida, 3-1, in 1996. Last season, the Tigers pulled off a five-game upset of No. 8 Notre Dame early in the season, their first win over a nationally ranked team and first win over a top 10-ranked team since 1992. LSU RETURNS FOUR STARTERS FOR 2006 The Tigers return four starters from the 2005 team that won the SEC West and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore Marina Skender, the 2005 SEC Freshman of the Year, ranked third on the team in kills and blocks and was second in service aces. Sophomore Kyna Washington ranked second on the team in kills and fourth in blocks. A pair of seniors also return, as Daniela Romero looks to move up the LSU career assists list, where she currently ranks fourth after three seasons, and Melody Clark solidifies her position in the middle after splitting time in the middle and on the right side her first two years. Senior Kassi Mikulik returns as the libero, although not an official starting position, where she started in all 29 matches last season. She led the team and ranked ninth in the SEC in digs as a junior. LSU BRINGS IN ACCOMPLISHED FRESHMEN The Tigers bring in a quintet of accomplished freshmen, several great additions to the talented returning players LSU has in place. Brittnee Cooper (Houston, Texas) led the Houston area in blocking and was a first-team all-district selection in 2004. A two-time participant in the USA Volleyball High Performance Camp, Alaina Klarquist (Allen, Texas) is an all-state selection who led her team to a runner up finish in the state championship in 2003. Coming from an outstanding club program that finished third nationally in 2003 and 2004, Maggie Lonergan (Antioch, Ill.) was a two-time first-team all-conference and all-area selection. Shannon Balikowsky (Baton Rouge, La.) and Kristie Dugas (Lincoln, Neb.) provide depth at the outside hitter position for the Tigers. TIGERS ARE 24-6 IN SEASON OPENERS; 13-10 IN SEC OPENERS With a 3-1 win over Rice on Aug. 25 in the Tiger Invitational, LSU moved to 24-6 all-time in season openers. The Tigers are now 15-2 overall against Rice, but this was the first season opener against the Owls. LSU has won 10 of its last 11 season openers.
