Non-Conference Game PHOENIX HOPE TO BOUNCE BACK WEDNESDAY AT NDSU Looking to bounce back after its first setback of the season, Green Bay returns to the road Wednesday to play at North Dakota State for the first time since securing a 71-62 victory on Nov. 27, 2009. The Phoenix also scored 71 points in a close two-point win over the Bison last season in another game played on Nov. 27. Green Bay s 6-1 edge in the series includes a 5-0 record in Wisconsin and a 1-1 mark in Fargo. The lone Bison win in the series was an 85-73 victory on NDSU s home floor on Nov. 25, 2006. The Phoenix will hope the road becomes more kind than it was on Sunday in Pittsburgh, when Green Bay fell at Duquesne 84-66. A better start on the offensive end will help its cause. The Phoenix shot just 24.2 percent in the first half and could not overcome a 37-23 halftime deficit. Sophomore Alec Brown had his second double-double in as many games with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the loss while senior Jarvis Williams, who missed last year s contest due to injury, scored a team-high 17. NDSU will be the second team in a row the Phoenix will face in its home opener. The Bison competed in the Hilltop Challenge in San Francisco and posted three victories. A 6-foot-7 sophomore guard, Taylor Braun earned MVP honors by averaging 16.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in the event. NDSU posted win over the host USF, Louisiana- Lafayette and Northern Arizona. GREEN BAY PROBABLE STARTERS No. Name Pos. Ht. Yr. THE STATE OF NORTH DAKOTA: The Phoenix has a 12-3 record in 15 games all-time against schools from the state of North Dakota, including a sweep of NDSU and North Dakota a season ago and a 94-55 victory over Mary in this season s opener on Nov. 11. The slate includes 11 non-conference games against teams from seven different conferences. November alone is bringing the Phoenix to road games at Duquesne (Atlantic 10), North Dakota State (Summit League), Indiana State (Missouri Valley) and Virginia (ACC). SEEING DOUBLE: Sophomore Alec Brown was expected to lead the Phoenix offensively in 2011-12, but the 7-foot-1 center has used his bigger frame to significantly increase his rebounding early this season. Brown has back-to-back double doubles with 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively to start the year. He has grabbed 21.1 percent of all rebounds when he is on the floor. BOARDWORK: Led by Brown and a deeper, longer frontline, Green Bay expected to be an even better rebounding team in 2011-12. The Phoenix had a +1.7 rebounding margin a season ago, and through two games this year have grabbed 32 more rebounds than its opponents. BLOCK PARTY: Brown shattered the single-season blocked shots record in his freshman campaign and has picked up where he left off. The 7-foot-1 center swatted 67 shots in 2010-11, 20 more than the previous single-season record. With six blocks in two contests this season, Brown has 73 career swats and is now sixth on the program s all-time list. He had three blocks in last season s meeting with the Bison. LOOK WHAT THE WIND BLEW IN: Wardle, a native of the Chicago area, tapped into the Windy City for a number of his incoming recruits this season. Freshmen Aaron Armstead (Hales Franciscan), Greg Mays (Crete-Monee) and Keifer Sykes (Marshall) all graduated from Chicago high schools this past spring while freshman Josh Humphrey (Crete-Monee) graduated in 2010 before attending St. John s Military Academy in 2010-11. Keifer Sykes started at point guard against Mary. The Chicago native is averaging seven points, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals while committing just two turnovers through two games. Alec Brown started a year ago against Minnesota Duluth and ended up starting each of the team s 32 games. The last freshman to start at guard for the Phoenix was Fletcher, who scored 14 points in a win over Oakland on Nov. 9, 2007. PRODUCE OFF THE PINE Green Bay used 51 points off its bench in the rout of Mary on Nov. 11. The Phoenix got 15 points from sophomore guard Terry Johnson and another 10 from Greg Mays in the contest. Junior Brennan Cougill gave the Phoenix another double-digit scorer off the bench against Duquesne, tallying 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting. POURING IN POINTS Green Bay scored 94 points in its opener, more than the squad scored in any game in 2010-11. The 94 points marked the first time Green Bay had scored at least 90 since posting 90 on Dec. 3, 2009 in a 90-69 against Loyola. The 94 points were the program s most since a 96-58 victory against North Dakota on Dec. 20, 2008. NEWEST BIG MAN Cougill is making an immediate impact for the Phoenix after transferring from Kirkwood Community College. The 6-foot-9, 265-pound forward is 6-for- 10 from the field and 2-of-2 from long range in Green Bay s first two games. The team s lone junior, Cougill was named preseason the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year by Rivals.com. ON THE TUBE Green Bay will appear on television at least 15 times in 2011-12, including nine games on Time Warner Cable Sports32, five on the ESPN family of networks and tonight s contest on Fox Sports Wisconsin. For TWC Sports32 home games, Chris Roth (play-by-play) and Jeff Nordgaard (color analyst) will be the broadcast team. Nordgaard is a Phoenix Hall of Famer and the program s third all-time leading scorer. FOLLOW THE PHOENIX On the radio: All home and away games will be broadcast on WDUZ The Fan.
