Bridgeport Vigilantes Bunkhouse News Volume 1, Issue 5 September 2011 Message from the Sheriff Well here we are in September: The invasion by the Robber s Roost Vigilantes from Ridgecrest has come and gone. What a great time we all had. We had a first time shooter, Elise Schaub, new to Cowboy Action shooting. She came with her family from Lancaster, CA and she did very well. What a sweet girl, we loved having her and hope she comes again. The weather for both days of our shoot was beautiful with blue skies, and every once in awhile we had some cloud cover. We had a total of 14 shooters for the weekend. I would like to thank everyone who helped us in any way this whole weekend. Special thanks to South Paw for being the head RO. All of the fees from the August shoot will go to our two charities. These charities are the Roy Rogers Happy Trails Children s Foundation and John Wayne Cancer Research Institute. For this month our shoot donation is at $195.00 and our donation box was $23.00 for a total of $2l8.00. We can make our goal of $1000 with everyone s help. Our charity drive will go until our Christmas Party in December of 2012. This money then will be divided between both of our charities. It is time to get your application in for our annual! BRIDGEPORT EASTERN HIGH SIERRA SHOOT OUT. September 22 nd, 23 rd, 24 th and 25 th Go to our Web Site and print the application and send it in ASAP, please. I need to get a count into Albert s Meat Market for the banquet. There is dry camping in our back yard, feel free to come earlier and stay later than these dates. If you have any questions, feel free to call me at 760-937-5463 or email me at our website. Hope to see you at our Annual Shoot Out in September! Thanks, Bodie Kid, SASS LIFE 17377 www.northernnevadacas.com/bv/index.htm SHERIFF S COWGIRL QUOTE Chaps, hats, spur horses and a little dust Makes a girl go crazy!!! I love Cowboys. SHERIFF S COWBOY QUOTE Don t go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path And leave a trail 1

As your Territorial Governor, I have been asked to explain what was talked about at the T.G. meeting at End Of Trail in June 2011. 1) If a competitor doesn't complete all stages of the main match (for any reason) she/he should not be eligible for any main match awards. Straw poll indicated the majority are in favor of this. Answer: This is pretty self explanatory! 2) Overloading the rifle: Answer: Overloading a rifle on a stage is not a safety issue. The safety comes into play if the shooter has any rounds left in the rifle after he/ she has fired the rifle and committed to the next gun. Then and only then a safety shall be issued if a live round is left anywhere in the rifle. Should the shooter realize they have loaded too many rounds and safely ejects those rounds, it s a no call. Should the shooter fire more rounds than called for in the stage, it would be a P for using ammunition that was illegally acquired. (Cowboy Chronicle, July 2011, pg 55 by Hipshot, SASS #7) For more information Cowboy Chronicle, July 2011 pg 55 & 58 3) Capping a Cap & Ball cylinder out of the revolver (@ the loading table) If this is ruled "illegal" due to safety concerns if the loaded/capped cylinder is dropped, there would likely be repercussions affecting the use of cartridge conversion cylinders (which must be loaded outside of the revolver before reassembly). Answer: This practice is legal, but not recommended; there is always a chance of a discharge. Hope this helps! I will keep you updated on any decisions made affecting our Club. I am always available to answer any of your questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me through our website or call me at 760-937-5463. Shoot Straight and Safe, Bodie Kid, SASS #17377 2

I m your Huckleberry! by Lawson Stone Congrats to our top 4 shooters of our August 2-Day Shoot: 1st Tehachapi Horn 2nd Ben Maverick 3rd Nasty Newt 4th Squeaky Whiel On and off I hear discussions in which people speculate on the exact origin and meaning is of the quaint idiom used by Doc Holliday in the movie Tombstone. I ve heard some wild suggestions, including huckleberry meaning pall-bearer suggesting I ll bury you. Still others think it has something to do with Mark Twain s character, Huckleberry Finn, and means steadfast friend, pard. This is unlikely, since the book of that title was not written until 1883. Tom Sawyer was written in 1876, but nowhere there is the term huckleberry used to mean steadfast friend or the like. CONTINUE NEXT PG 4

Still others claim that a victor s crown or wreath of huckleberry is involved, making the statement I m your huckleberry something like I ll beat you! But no such reference can be found in the historical materials supporting the use of this term in 19th century America. Additionally, huckleberry was native to North America so it s unlikely it was used in ancient Britain as a prize! Solutions to such questions are actually very easy to find, since there are numerous dictionaries of the English language in its various periods, and there are dictionaries of English slang. These works simply pull from books, magazines, and newspapers of the period representative usages of the words to illustrate their meaning. I consulted several of these and found the expression to have a very interesting origin. Huckleberry was commonly used in the 1800 s in conjunction with persimmon as a small unit of measure. I m a huckleberry over your persimmon meant As a result, huckleberry came to denote idiomatically two things. First, it denoted a small unit of measure, a tad, as it were, and a person who was a huckleberry could be a small, unimportant person usually expressed ironically in mock selfdepreciation. The second and more common usage came to mean, in the words of the Dictionary of American Slang: Second Supplemented Edition (Crowell, 1975): A man; specif., the exact kind of man needed for a particular purpose. 1936: Well, I m your huckleberry, Mr. Haney. Tully, Bruiser, 37. Since 1880, archaic. The Historical Dictionary of American Slang which is a multivolume work, has about a third of a column of citations documenting this meaning all through the latter 19th century. So I m your huckleberry means I m just the man you re looking for! Now ain t that a daisy! The Daisy comment is easier. In the late 19th century daisy was a common slang term for the best in it s class. So for daisy just substitute the best and you ll have it. It was a short-lived idiom and doesn t seem to be popular much after 1890. Living here in the western Midlands of South Carolina I ve never seen huckleberries (that I know of) but they appear to be very similar to our variety of blueberries..a Big Thank You to our friends from Ridgecrest, Robber s Roost Vigilantes For helping make our August 2-day Shoot such a hootin /shootin good time for all! I m just a bit better than you. See you at Defend The Roost in October The Bridgeport Vigilantes 5

COWBOY/COWGIRL OF THE MONTH THE PENNER S AKA EL ROD & TONI 2 BITS When you speak of El Rod you speak of Toni2Bits and when you think of Toni2Bits you think of El Rod. So what better way to report on the Cowboy/Cowgirl of the Month than by writing of them together. El Rod was born in Ukiah, California and grew up in the Ukiah/Willits area. Toni2Bits although born in Monterey, California grew up all over as an Army Brat, Germany, Italy, New Jersey. (New Jersey? What s up with that, Toni?) In 1987, El Rod and Toni married in Sebastopol, California. Their marriage has lasted these 25 years due to love, hard work and respect for each other. And maybe a bit to the fact that in 1992, they began shooting with IPSC, The International Practical Shooting Confederation. IPSC recognizes all the shooting disciplines - Handgun, Rifle, Shotgun, and Action Air. From IPSC, their interest in Cowboy Action Shooting began. Toni loved the dress up part of SASS, so CAS authentic dressing was right up her alley! She has many authentic looking outfits in her closet. El Rod says their motor home is packed with her outfits when they go shooting that they sometimes have little room to sit. Oops, sorry El Rod was this not to be repeated? Check out the dudes these two are wearing on the next page. 7

Toni and El Rod keep to the authentic when it comes to Cowboy Action Shooting. But El Rod, what happened here? These two loved to have fun no matter what they were doing!!!!! El Rod s alias came from his many years building and racing hot rods. His race car has a license plate of El Rod 99, so it was a natural fit that El Rod would be his alias. El Rod came up with Toni s alias due her petite size, however 2Bits was already registered with SASS so Toni added her name to the front, Toni 2 Bits. They began their Cowboy Action Shooting with the Helldorado club in Ukiah, CA. They now shoot with High Plains Drifters for which L-Rod has been their Territory Governor for many years and Roop County where Toni 2 Bits has been their Territory Governor for many years also. We are proud to say that they were 2 of the 7 original members of the Bridgeport Vigilantes. They continue to shoot with us when their schedule allows as they have moved on to Black Powder Long Range shooting. Thank you El Rod and Toni 2 Bits for all your help and support over these seven years! 8
