Sapelo Hammock Golf Club May Newsletter 1354 Marshview Drive NE Shellman Bluff, GA 31331 From the GM: May starts a very busy time of the year with a month full of outings, a senior interclub event and the McIntosh Academy Senior Prom. I m sure we are all ready for some real summer weather and the end of those unseasonably cool evenings. The golf course is greening up quickly and is playing just right. The chip and run is about to be replaced with the soft lob around the greens! Before you know it, schools will be out for the summer and it s not to early to start thinking about the Sapelo Junior Camps in June & July. Sign-ups are underway, so please give us a call to get your golfers registered. The 2 nd Annual NeSmith Chevrolet Couples Championship is also right around the corner. This year s date is Saturday, June 2 and will be limited to the first 40 teams entered, so please remember to send your entry in. Last year s event was a huge success and we re looking for another great time again this year. With a number of new events sure to be announced, keep an eye out for all of the details. Remember to visit the clubs website sapelohammockgolfclub.com for the most updated information. We look forward to seeing you out at our next event. To all of the owners, members, committee members and volunteers who continued to give so much toward the growth and success of the club, thank you. Without your commitment and passion, none of this would be possible. As I've said before, my door is always open and I welcome your thoughts, opinions and ideas. My thanks again and I am privileged to serve as your General Manager & Director of Golf. Fairways & Greens! Jim Mancill, PGA General Manager/Director of Golf
From the Course: Could warmer weather actually be here? After an early green up the temperatures and the course did a 180. Warm one day, cold the next. Along with the below average temperatures came a bumper crop of late season winter weeds. May is when we turn the corner, hopefully temps will be normal and the growing season will begin. Tee tops and green surrounds have been sprayed along with a few fairways for weed control. Apart from that, the biggest improvement in course conditions will come from hot weather. The weeds currently on the course are all winter weeds. They are mostly annuals and will die out when temperatures increase. We should start to see improvement in the coming weeks. For now we are mowing at below normal heights to help the Bermuda green up and keeps the appearance more consistent. We have recently completed our pre-emerge for summer weeds course wide. We will be fertilizing on Thursday, May 10 on the entire course. This winter was certainly harsh and colder than normal. I have seen a few areas of winter kill, but the course faired well considering. I look forward to warmer weather and the improvement it will bring to the course this month. As always, feel free to contact me 678-570-1888 with any question or concerns you may have. Chris Hankey Director of Golf Course Operations
