Phillips-Rooks Extension District #5 Volume 14-15, Issue 9 June 2015 LIVESTOCK PROJECT MEMBERS If you want information on upcoming spring livestock shows please contact the Extension Office. Spring shows are a great way to enhance your showmanship skills and meet many people from around the region. NOMINATIONS FOR KANSAS STATE FAIR AND KANSAS JUNIOR LIVESTOCK SHOW Nominations for swine, lamb, commercial heifer, and meat goats are due June 15 th to the Youth Livestock Program office. These are for livestock exhibitors wanting to participate at the Kansas State Fair and Kansas Junior Livestock Show. DISTRICT HORSE SHOW The Northwest District Horse show is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, 2015 in Oakley, Kansas. Entry fees are $4.00 per event and the deadline to be certified in the appropriate level is June 22, 2015. Intermediate (age 9 to 13) must have successfully met the requirements of all sections of Achievement level I, except Showmanship and Halter class participants; they must complete the knowledge and leadership sections of Achievement level I prior to the deadline. Senior (ages 14 to 18) must have successfully met the requirements of all 3 sections of Achievement level II, except Showmanship and Halter class participants, they must complete the knowledge and leadership sections of Achievement level II prior to the deadline. STATE HORSE JUDGING The State Horse Judging Contest will be held Thursday, June 25, 2015 at the Salina Fairgrounds. Check in will start at 8:30 a.m. with the contest starting promptly at 9:30 a.m. Contest rules and registration forms are available online at http://www.kansas4-h.org/p.aspx?tabid=441. Registration will be due in the State 4-H Office on June 15th. STATE 4-H HORTICULTURE JUDGING CONTEST The State Horticulture Judging Contest will be Saturday, August 22, 2015 on the K-State Campus. Plant Materials study guide is available at www. Kansas4-h.org. More information will be available soon. COUNTY FIRE BANS AND ROCKET LAUNCHES This is a reminder about Kansas 4-H rocketry rules as they relate to fire bans in Kansas. While much of Kansas has received recent rains, many parts of Kansas are still in a severe/extreme drought situation. The 2015 Kansas State Fair rules state if a fire burn ban is in effect for any county in Kansas, exhibitors in any Kansas county are not required to launch their rocket(s). All requirements for the launching of rockets for the state fair and the documenting of the launching are suspended for the duration of the ban. NWYLF The Northwest Youth and Leaders' Forum (NWYLF) and Day Camp Training will be held June 17, 2015, at the K-State Ag Research Center Auditorium in Hays. NWYLF is open to any Kansas youth 12 and older, 4-H leaders, other community volunteers and Extension staff. All participants must submit the registration form, pay the $15.00 registration fee (cash or check to KSU) and send a 2015 copy of your Kansas 4-H Participation Form in order to attend the 2015 NWYLF.

It s a weekend to plan some kind of service project to join with 4-H members, volunteers and alumni across the state to see how much service we can do! Your project may take 2 hours or 20 it does not matter. Mark your calendars now for October 10-11, 2015. More information coming in the next two months. 4-H MEMBERSHIP ACHIEVEMENT PLANS The 4-H Membership Achievement Plans have been updated to reflect several of the changes that have happened in the 4-H Youth Development program over the last few years. They are currently listed at (http://www.kansas4-h.org/p.aspx?tabid=477), these will go into effect for the 2015-2016 4-H year. PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS MEAT GOATS The 4-H Meat Goat project is designed for members who are interested in learning more about raising goats for meat. You can raise goats for milk, mohair or even packing and pulling carts. There is an increasing demand for goat meat products. Phillips County News PHILLIPS COUNTY 4-H COUNCIL MEETING The next Phillips County 4-H Council Meeting will be June 22 nd at 7:00 p.m. at the Phillips County Fair Building. DAY CAMP Day Camp will be June 3, 2015. Registration will be from 9:30-10:00 a.m. Camp will be 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. at the City Park. Registration is a canned food item for current 4-H members and a canned food item plus $2.00 for non 4-H members. Children ages 7-11 (as of January 1, 2015) are encouraged to attend. LIFE SKILLS JUDGING There is one more Life Skills Judging Contest remaining for this year. July 24 - Phillips County Fair PHILLIPS COUNTY FAIR BOOK The 2015 Phillips County Fair Book is now available at the Phillipsburg Extension Office and posted on our website www.phillipsrooks.ksu.edu. Please be sure to carefully read the fair book. There have been several changes that you don t want to miss. FASHION REVUE Fashion Revue, Buymanship, Clothing Construction and Textiles entries will be due to the Phillipsburg Extension Office by July 6 th at 5:00 p.m. No late entries will be taken. Entry forms are available at the Phillipsburg Extension Office or on the website www.phillipsrooks.ksu.edu. The Fashion Revue will be held on July 14 th at the Huck Boyd Center. FAIR PRE-ENTRIES All Phillips County Fair Entries are due to the Phillipsburg Extension Office on July 15 th by 5:00 p.m. No late entries will be taken. The entry forms are available at the Phillipsburg Extension Office or on the website. www.phillipsrooks.ksu.edu. POULTRY FAIR ENTRIES Due to a recent outbreak of Avian Influenza in Kansas, the Kansas Department of Agriculture is requiring that all poultry entering country fairs be tested at least 10 days prior to arriving at the fair. Therefore we changed the date for testing poultry to July 13 th at 5:30 p.m. ALL poultry coming to the fair must be tested at this time. A band will be placed on the leg to indicate the bird has been tested.

PHILLIPS COUNTY FAIR The Phillips County Fair will be held July 24th July 28th. PHILLIPS COUNTY DOG PRACTICE The Phillips County Dog Project practice is every Monday beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Phillips County Fair Grounds. To be eligible to exhibit at the county fair, youth must attend at least 3 practice sessions with your dog. ATTENTION DOG, CAT AND PET PROJECT MEMBERS This year with your fair entries you will need to turn in a 4x6 picture of you with your pet attached to an 8x11 cardstock. Decorate the page as you wish and be sure to include your name and the name of the animal. Since these animals do not stay for the duration of the fair we will be using these pictures to show the public your fair project and display your ribbon placing. You will pick up your picture the last day of fair when all projects are checked out. PHILLIPS COUNTY HORSE PRACTICES The Phillips County Horse Practices have begun. You MUST attend at least 3 practices to be able to show at the Fair. Possible activities include: Trampoline Park, exploration place and packing Bob boxes. All Junior Leaders that are interested in attending need to contact the Stockton Extension Office (785) 425-6851 by June 15, 2015 so arrangements can be made. ROOKS COUNTY 4-H COUNCIL HAPPENINGS The Rooks County 4-H Council met May 11, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. It was decided to purchase 2 refurbished cash registers and 2 roaster ovens for the 4-H Fair Food Stand. Changes were made to the 4-H Fair Food Stand menu and it was decided to advertise for the 4-H Fair Food Stand Manager position. The next meeting is July 13, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. A training session for those that are 16 years of age and older and will be running the cash registers at the 4-H Fair Food Stand will be held following the meeting.
BEEF HOOF TRIMMING Beef project members: A beef hoof trimming will be held Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at the Rooks County Fairgrounds Sutor-Blauer Arena. Please call the Extension Office (785) 425-6851 to schedule an appointment. Howard Fehlman will be doing the hoof trimming for $35 per head. ROOKS COUNTY STYLE REVUE Rooks County Style Revue will be Thursday, July 23, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Public Revue at the Stockton City Hall. Entries are due July 15, 2015. ROOKS COUNTY FREE FAIR The Rooks County Free Fair will be August 9 15, 2015. Entries are due August 1, 2015. Each club is responsible for a whole day 4-H Food Stand shift at the fair. Schedule for this year will be: Monday, August 10 Star, Tuesday, August 11 Woodston Sunflower, Wednesday, August 12 Eager Beaver, Thursday, August 13 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Helpful Hands and Mt.
