LAWRENCE SYBESMA MEMORIAL AMVETS POST 23 98 52 ND STREET SE, KENTWOOD, MI 49548 616-531-5438 NOVEMBER 2018 AMVETS MEETING: November 5 th at 7:00 pm sharp your attendance is welcome! Monthly Fish Fry November 9 th (due to deer hunting) AMVET News: Commander Barry Abshire (BarryLeeAb@yahoo.com) 2018 2019 Officers Commander: Barry Abshire 1 st Vice Commander: Jim Walters 2 nd Vice Commander: George Watterson 3 rd Vice Commander: Ken Skonecki Adjutant: Vacant Finance Officer: Mel Rhoads Judge Advocate: John Stawkowski Provost Marshall: Ken Smith Trustee: Harold Mast Trustee: John Felui Trustee: Jeff Norman Greetings my fellow Veterns and Ladies. November is here, where did the year go? Thanks to all who made October a great month. Your Post is doing great with thanks to your support at our events. A quick note our monthy Fish Fry s will be held one week earlier this month due to all the deer hunters leaving for camp. The date is Friday November 9 th. From all my officers and myself we wish each of you and your families a Blessed Thanksgiving Day. From 1 st Vice Commander I would like to wish all of the membership a Very Happy Tanksgiving. Please keep in mind November 11 th, a day we wish all Veterans a wonderful day and thank those who wore the uniform of our country. With that being said, what a better way to say thanks to a Veteran is to have them join our Post. Sign-up a New Veteran. Thank you ~Jim Walters (j.walters0777@gmail.com)

From 2nd Vice Commander About bands at Post 23. We will have the JetBeats back on the 2nd. If you haven t heard them you re missing out on a very good group that fashions themselves after the Beatles. On the 21 st the night before Thanksgiving the Frank Eimer Band will be doing the annual pre-holiday evening of music. With fall starting I hope everyone will continue to support the Post whenever they can. Without your support, we cannot continue. Karaoke returned on Saturdays during September and will continue for the fall and winter months as long as it s profitable for the Post. We will have some new karaoke groups coming in to replace D. J. Specialist. They are Grown Folks Music and Spinn Doctor plus Impressions will pick up a few Saturdays. Wednesdays will also continue. The time will stay 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. as per singer s request. Impressions will continue doing all Wednesdays. Now for what s happening at the Post since last time. You will notice the purple lines on the pavement and the 2 new signs in the parking lot near the Fun Spot fence. They honor those who have been awarded a Purple Heart. This is a medal given since the Revolutionary War to those who have been wounded in combat and something you re going to see more and more at the various veterans clubs to honor those who were unfortunate to receive this medal. Thank You Ken Fox for donating the signs. PLEASE! If you are planning to have an event at Post 23, no matter how small or big you need to clear it with the 2 nd Vice first, NOT anyone else. He has the master schedule of events and we don t need two groups showing up on the same day at the same time. So please check first. Also; you MUST HAVE a member in good standing present during the entire event. Remember people, OUR OFFICERS ARE VOLUNTEERS and if you don t like how something is running then you should be at the monthly meetings to voice your opinion or run for an office next May. Someone told me if you don t stand up to help then you should stay seated and be quiet. He actually said if you don t stand up you should shut up but I didn t like it that way. Thank you, Brenda, for stepping up to help me with candy bags or we would have dropped them. I have been getting donations for candy and those of you who carefully open the bags, so we can reuse them. Thank you, it s much appreciated. Don t forget the Euchre night on Tuesdays starting at 6:00 p.m. The November fish fry is being held a week early this month due to deer hunting. It is being held on November 9 th. Starting again in December it will be held on the third Friday of the month until April starting at 5:00 p.m. until gone. The first fish fry was very good. We ordered more fish this year and had enough fish and chicken to go around. This fish fry the Tree of Lights will be taking donations again for families in need at Christmas. Please help if you can. On the 2 nd the AMVETS will put on a prime rib dinner with all the fixing starting at 5:00 p.m. Check the fliers for the menu and cost. Remember to vote on the 6 th. If you don t vote, then you shouldn t complain.

On the 10 th the Post will try hopefully an annual Euchre Tournament starting with noon sign up and 1:00 p.m. start. Please bring along some kinds of snack food/finger food or special disk to pass. There will be breaks during for you to snack. On the 11 th the ladies auxiliary will have a Veterans Dinner at the Post. I understand that veteran s dinners are free so check the fliers for the time, menu and cost for non-veterans. October 14 th, we had our first New Year s Eve party meeting at 12:30 p.m. to see if we have anyone interested in helping to plan the party. We will have another on November 18 th. The more people who help out make the event much easier to put together. This year s band is the Frank Eimer Band. Tickets will go on sale November 12 th at 7:00 p.m. I hope that having the meeting on a Monday night will get more members interested in helping. Cost will be $20.00 per person and as in the past seating is reserved at time you purchase your tickets. The ticket ## will match your seat. The cost will include one free drink, party favors, dinner (which is 2 meats, 2 vegetables, 2 potatoes, salad, roll and dessert) and a light buffet (2 sandwich meats, rolls, cheese & crackers tray, vegetables & dip tray) snack table at 11:15 p.m. and of course Champagne at midnight. The 6 Month calendar meeting will be November 29 th at 6:30 p.m. If you have an event you would like to put in the January 1 st thru June 30 th, 2019 calendar you need to be at this meeting to have it approved. The shuffleboard has been fixed by a member (THANK YOU VERY MUCH). It still needs a little adjusting, but we are going ahead with a shuffleboard league starting October 14 th (Sunday) at 1:00 p.m. running for ten weeks. I realize the poster mentions the 7 th but that is Polish Dazes so we will need to delay by one week. It will be 20 people who signed the poster and pared in to teams. If there is enough interest, we may resume in January again on Sunday. History: On the 10 th the U. S. Marine Corps established (1775). On the 11 th month, 11 th day, 11 th hour the Armistice was signed ending World War I (1918) and is the true Veteran s Day. The 12 th is the observed Veteran s Day. The 21 st Grenada Campaign Ended after only 30 days (1983). The 22 nd is Thanksgiving. If you have flags, fly them on the 11 th, 12 th and 22 nd. Peace ~George Watterson, AMVETS 2nd Vice From 3 rd Vice Commander On November 8 th please remember to hug a Veteran, National Hug a Veteran Day. From my family to all of you and your families Deb and I would like to wish you a wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving. God Bless, ~Ken Skonecki
