PETE LIPTRAP OF PICKERINGTON NORTH Pete Liptrap is the son of Jim and Joe Ann Liptrap. Pete is a 1974 graduate of Columbus Eastmoor High School where he played basketball for William Red Courtney and was an All-City player. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Studies at Muskingum College. While at Muskingum, he played basketball for the legendary Jim Burson and was a two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection, the league MVP his senior year, and was voted the Outstanding Senior Athlete at Muskingum. He taught in the Pickerington Local School system for 35 years. He taught Social Studies his first four years while serving as Assistant Basketball Coach to Charlie Gill. He next served as a Graduate Assistant at Miami (Oh.) University where he received his Masters of Arts Degree in Physical Education. In 1983, he returned to Pickerington where he served as Head Basketball Coach for the next 30 years. For 20 years he served as Head Coach of Pickerington High School, and following the split of the district, he spent 10 years as Head Coach of Pickerington North High School. Pete compiled a record of 406-263 in his career as Head Basketball Coach. During this time his teams won 10 Ohio Capital Conference Championships, and 7 times his teams reached the Central District Finals in Division I, winning District Titles in 1991 and 2002. The 1991 team lost in the Regional Semi-Final while the 2002 team was beaten in the Regional Final. For his accomplishments Coach Liptrap has twice been recognized as A.P. State Coach of the Year (1989 and 1994), and three times he was recognized as the Central District Coach of the Year (1989, 1994, 2011). Additionally, he has been Ohio Capital Conference Coach of the Year 10 times, District 11 Coach of the Year 9 times, and twice was named Dispatch-Agonis Coach of the Year in Central Ohio (1989, 1994). Pete has received the prestigious Bob Arnzen Award for his 20 plus years of service at Pickerington. He was honored with the OHSAA Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity (SEI) Award in 2014. Pete has coached in the Ohio-Kentucky Game, the North-South All- Star Game, and he helped coach Team Ohio, which won the first National Rising Senior Event that was sponsored by the NHSBCA. Pete was active in the Ohio Basketball Coaches Association, serving as District 11 Director and the Director of the Scholarship Society Awards for the OHSBCA. Pete's family has been his biggest supporters over the years. He has been married for 27 years to his lovely wife Leslie and they have 2 sons. Joe is an elementary teacher in Grandview and Jeff is a junior at Otterbein University, majoring in elementary education. He appreciates their great support as well as the support of his parents, his in-laws, and his two sisters, Joni and Toni. Pete remains active in coaching today serving as an assistant at Bexley High School. He still serves as a substitute teacher in Pickerington. As he reflects on his career, he would like to thank the great players he coached as well as his loyal assistants throughout his career. He truly appreciates all the hard work they have done for him and the program. Dave Butcher of Pickerington Central Dave grew up the son of a Superintendent and Elementary School Teacher. He graduated from Toronto High School in 1973 where he lettered in basketball, football and golf and is a member of the Toronto High School Hall of Fame. He received his undergrad and Master s degree from The Ohio State University. After beginning his coaching career on the boys side, he accepted the Pickerington girls head coaching job in 1983. Butcher would quickly turn around a struggling program and win his first State Championship at age 30 in 1985 starting an unprecedented 15 year run which would put Ohio girls basketball on the map. Largely due to his team's relentless effort on the defensive end, Butcher s teams were ranked for 10 straight years in USA Today s Super 25 and were ranked number one in Ohio by the Associated Press for nine consecutive years. Pickerington also had a 74 game winning streak and won 181 straight league games during his career. Five of his players were named Player of the Year in Ohio and more than 70 of his student athletes have played Division 1 college basketball. Dave was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Greater Columbus Basketball Legends Hall of Fame in 2015. Other career highlights include defeating Ohio and WNBA Legend Katie Smith's Logan Lady Chieftains in front of a still record crowd (12,385) St. John's Arena in 1992 and knocking off Christ the King High School, New York which featured WNBA legend Chamique Holdsclaw and Oregon City High School, then USA #1, in back to back nights. Collectively, Coach Butcher has been the head varsity girls basketball coach in Pickerington for 35 years, 20 years as head coach at Pickerington Central and 15 years as head coach at Pickerington North. He comes into the 2017-18 season with a record of 737-133, all in the "big" school division, which is almost a 84% winning percentage. He has won 24 district titles including 23 in a row. His teams have won 23 Ohio Capital Conference Championships, 13 regional championships, 6 state titles ('85, '90, '92, '93, '98, and '99) and finished #1 in the country by USA Today in 1999. Amazingly, Butcher took teams to the Ohio Girls Basketball State Tournament in four different decades. Dave has received numerous coaching honors such as: OCC Coach of the year, District Coach of the Year, State Coach of the Year, Paul Walker Award recipient, and was also named USA Today s National Coach of the Year. In addition, Dave has coached in the WBCA College All-American Game, has been a member of the National High School All-American Selection Committee, and had the honor of being a part of USA Women's Basketball, coaching at the Youth Developmental Olympic Festival in Colorado Springs. Dave has been married for 38 years to Linda and they are the proud parents of two sons and a daughter. Brian is a graduate of Capital Law School and is employed as an attorney in Columbus, Jeff is a faculty member at the College of Coastal Georgia, and Stacey, a Capital nursing graduate, is a labor and delivery nurse in Traverse City, Michigan.

DAVID FROELICH OF VAN WERT David Froelich grew up in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana before moving to Van Wert where he graduated from high school in 1975. He grew up in an athletic family with two older brothers and supportive parents who instilled work ethic, competitiveness, and core values. Serving as great role models, his parents and brothers set an example of how to be successful in all aspects of life. After playing basketball and baseball in high school, he became a four-year basketball letter winner at Alma College in Michigan and was a two-year captain while earning various team and league honors before graduating with a B.A. in Education in 1979. He later received a Masters in Sports Administration from Ashland University in 1983. Upon college graduation, he began his teaching and coaching career at Perrysburg High School as a Business Education teacher while coaching football, basketball and girls track. He was extremely fortunate to begin his basketball coaching career with Hall of Fame coach, Larry Clark and spent four years with him as a varsity assistant. In 1983, he accepted the head coaching position at Colonel Crawford High School winning 141 games while spending nine years there as a teacher and Athletic Director before accepting the Assistant Principal job at Van Wert High School where he coached 21 years as the head coach and had 279 wins. While always having a team first mentality, his teams played hard and were fundamentally sound, allowing them to win numerous league and tournament championships throughout the years. He also amassed various coaching honors with the following Coach of the Year awards several times: Crawford County, Lima News Dream Team, Western Buckeye League, AP North Central Ohio, AP Northwest Ohio, District 8 Division 2 and all divisions. He was also fortunate enough to coach the following All Star games: Mansfield News Journal, District 8, the Ohio-West Virginia, OHSBCA North-South, Ohio-Kentucky, and the Ohio-Indiana. In 2012, he was awarded the prestigious Bob Arnzen Award for his years at Van Wert High School. As a 39-year member of the OHSBCA, he was first elected as the District 6 Vice President before moving to Van Wert. He then was elected District 8 President for three years, District 8 Director for two years and was then elected to serve on the OHSBCA Executive Board for a 10-year term, including serving as President from 2006-2008. In 2010, he was appointed to be the Ohio representative to the NHSBCA and was fortunate enough to receive the National Court of Honor award in 2014. David has been married to the most supportive and understanding coaching wife, Rhonda, for 39 years. They are the proud parents of three daughters, Sarah, Melissa and Kayla and two son-in-laws Scott White and TJ Imm and four grandsons Jayden, Landon, Keegan and Gavin. This award is a program award and Coach Fro has been blessed to have outstanding players, great assistant coaches, many who either stayed with the program for many years or went on to become head coaches, as well as supportive administrators who allowed him to coach with his tough and competitive approach. On behalf of all who made this award possible, he says thank you and is humbled and honored to be an inductee to the OHSBCA Hall of Fame 2018. National High School Basketball Coaches Association Position Paper A. Title/Topic: Use of a Shot Clock in scholastic games B. Suggested Stance/Position for NHSBCA It is the opinion of the National High School Basketball Coaches Association that the use of the shot clock should be an option available to every state for adoption. C. Brief Background (facts, etc.) As of the end of the 2016-17 academic year, there are eight states (Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, Washington, New York, California, North Dakota and South Dakota) that allow use of the shot clock at some level in at least 1 gender in their state. There are a number of other states that have also expressed an interest in at least looking into use of the shot clock. However, the purchase of the equipment necessary to implement the use of the shot clock is a significant expense. Many state leaders are hesitant to mandate that expense upon every school in their state without more information. D. Rationale, other information The NHSBCA suggests that the National Federation make the use of the shot clock a state adoption measure for at least 5 years. The NFHS could make use of the shot clock optional, with language similar to what it used this year in enlarging the coaching box The coaching box now shall be bounded by a line drawn 28 feet from the end line toward the division line. A line drawn from the sideline toward the team bench becomes the end of the coaching box toward the end line. State associations may alter the length and placement of the 28-foot coaching box. States could choose to use the shot clock at some level in some form within its state in order to gather data and information to make an informed decision about whether they feel it should be implemented completely. Currently coaches, officials and state leaders have only information they are given from those eight states that are using the shot clock. NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION POSITION PAPER A. Title/Topic: Specialization of high school student-athletes in one sport B. Suggested Stance/Position for the NHSBCA It is the opinion of the National High School Basketball Coaches Association (NHSBCA) that the specialization trend in America (focusing development in one sport and eliminating participation in all other sports during a student-athlete s high school years) is detrimental to the total growth of young people and opens up the potential for higher injury rates and stunted development. C. Brief Background: Currently in our country there is a movement on encouraging young student-athletes to focus on playing and nurturing development in one sport only and to eliminate participating in all others at their schools. The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (with additional funding from the National Federation of State High School Associations Foundation) recently completed a study revealing that high school athletes who specialize in a single sport sustain lower-extremity injuries at significantly higher rates than athletes who do not specialize in one sport. This study was conducted throughout the 2015-16 school year at 29 high schools in Wisconsin, and involved more than 1,500 student-athletes. The study also showed that specialized athletes were twice as likely to sustain a gradual onset/repetitive-use injury as athletes who did not specialize, and those who specialized were more likely to sustain an injury even when controlling gender, grade, previous injury status and sport. This University of Wisconsin study focused specifically on physical affects specialization causes. The NHSBCA feels that there is also a possibility of some psychological, emotional, and social developmental damage done to young people risking burn-out, alienation from peers, and a misconception surrounding their own personal importance in the school environment. D. Rationale and other thoughts: It is the opinion of the NHSBCA that the specialization of high school age student-athletes, based on a multitude of data and research, raises the potential for physical injury in these young people, as well as impeding their psychological, emotional, and social growth during their early years of scholastic competition, and should be strenuously discouraged whenever appropriate. We recommend that school districts create and disperse information on this subject, and make it mandatory for all students entering high school (along with their parents) to read and internalize this data before making well-informed decisions. This can be accomplished in orientation sessions prior to beginning high school. In addition, because most of this is brought on by the desire to receive athletic scholarships after high school, discussions and information sessions should be conducted (during these same events) regarding the opportunity for potential financial aid upon entering college. Naturally, every school will handle these procedures differently, but it should be imperative families confirm they ve been made aware of this information and understand that there is a great amount of information on this specialization subject available to them. We further recommend visiting youthguidelines.com / a resource covering healthy guidelines for young people.
