Bear Grylls Survival Academy Information & Joining Instructions

COURAGE/DETERMINATION/INSTINCT/SPIRIT FITNESS/RESOURCEFULNESS/FIRE WITHIN SELF-RELIANCE/HOPE So many people have asked me over the years where they can learn extreme, practical survival - the type that requires spirit, determination and the skills to self-rescue against the odds, in some of the harshest terrain around. So it is with great pride that we can now finally launch the Bear Grylls Survival Academy to be able to share some of these skills and what it really means to be able to look after yourself when the chips are down, says Bear Grylls. COURSE OVERVIEW Do you have what it takes to prove yourself a survivor? There s a reason why the British Special Forces favour Dartmoor as a training ground for their elite recruits as one of the UK s most hostile environments, it can test the mettle of even the most intrepid soldier. This course is a three-day survival experience training in the same natural arena, that will challenge the boundaries of your strength, courage and wit. Survive to fight, don t fight to survive, as they say in the military. Starting from the moment of your arrival, Bear s team of expert instructors will guide you through his philosophy and techniques, and pass on vital skills such as knots and harnesses, navigation, trapping, fishing and foraging, selfdefence and first aid. You ll eat wild food, tell survival stories by the campfire, and write some new ones as you ascend and descend steep cliff faces and cross near-impossible terrain. At the end of day two, you will be tested to the max on your new found skills. You will climb, traverse, rappel, swim, jump and, be rescued by a special forces helicopter. PLEASE NOTE: You must arrive at Brimpts Farm for 13:30pm start where teas & coffees will be available. Location Brimpts Farm Dartmeet, Dartmoor, Devon PL20 6SG

SURVIVAL ON THE MOORS YOUR COURSE DAY 1 - ARRIVAL The adventure begins at 13:30 with a chance to meet your course leaders, fellow participants, and to ensure you have all the items on the Kit List. We will then move over rugged terrain by 4x4 vehicles to the Academy s wilderness base camp. On arrival you will receive a safety brief, course brief and outline. You will then be issued with your personal training equipment. Now we are straight in to a BG Priorities of Survival lecture followed by a practical skills session on knife use. As the evening goes on, you will have the chance to explore your bleak surroundings and sort out your sleeping accommodation. After that your culinary skills will be tested as you prepare and cook an Alpine Style Hut Meal for your group with only wild and natural ingredients. It will be your first real challenge with no running water, electricity or processed food on hand. This may be the last hot food you eat DAY 2 Today includes a field physical training session, Self-defence training, practical use of knots and improvised harnesses lesson followed by survival navigation training. The day continues with remote and improvised First Aid, followed by the practical use of snares, traps and drop out fishing lines. You will learn how to cross difficult terrain including boulder fields, bogs, rock scrambles and river crossing techniques. On route across the moor you will learn how to forage for food and identify what can be eaten in the wild, purify and filter dirty river water, skin, gut and prepare a range of wild food. In late afternoon the instructors leave you, and, you re on your own. As evening draws on you will need to locate and build a camp, make fire, forage for food and survive the rugged elements of Dartmoor. DAY 3 You will wake up early tired and possibly hungry but it s now that you need all your strength, determination and will to survive. The final challenge. You have to navigate out of the wild camp area across high Tyrolean ropes, rappel down huge rock faces, swim through deep water and finally climb a 100ft rock face. If your successful, you and the team will climb to a high point on one of Dartmoor s Tors, pop smoke and be rescued by our special forces helicopter. Now just a low level helicopter flight across the rugged Dartmoor terrain is the last challenge before reaching civilisation.

ABOUT BEAR GRYLLS Bear Grylls has become known worldwide as one of the most-recognized faces of survival and outdoor adventure. His journey to this acclaim started on a small island off the UK coast, where his late father taught him to climb and sail. Trained from a young age in martial arts, Grylls went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces, as part of 21 SAS Regiment. It was here that he perfected many of the survival skills that his fans all over the world enjoy, as he pits himself against the worst of Mother Nature. Despite a free-fall parachuting accident in Africa, where he broke his back in three places and endured many months in military rehabilitation, Grylls went on to become one of the youngest climbers ever to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He then went on to star in seven seasons of the Discovery Channel s Emmy Awardnominated Man vs. Wild TV series, which became one of the most-watched shows on the planet, reaching an estimated 1.2 billion viewers. Since then he has gone on to host more extreme adventure TV shows across more global networks than anyone else in the world, including the BAFTA award-winning The Island with Bear Grylls and BAFTA award-winning Bear Grylls Survival School. In addition Bear produces and hosts Bear s Mission with... for ITV, NBC s Running Wild, 'Absolute Wild' for Dragon TV in China and Face the Wild for Facebook Watch. He is a number 1 bestselling Author, an Honorary Colonel to the Royal Marine Commandos and the youngest-ever Chief Scout, and inspiration to fifty million Scouts worldwide.
