PAGE 2 HEAD COACH TOM BRANDS Former Hawkeye wrestler Tom Brands, a 1996 Olympic gold medalist and four- me all-american, is in his second season as Iowa s head wrestling coach. The three- me NCAA champion and member of wrestling s Hall of Fame is only the Hawkeyes eighth wrestling coach. He has an 32-6 overall and 10-3 Big Ten record at Iowa and a 49-26 career mark. In his first season at Iowa, Brands coached 165-pounder Mark Perry to Big Ten and NCAA tles. The Hawkeyes also crowned three all-americans in 2007, going 14-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten. Brands served as head coach at Virginia Tech University for two seasons (2005-06), recording a 17-20 dual mark. In his first season with the Hokies, Brands led the team to the 2005 regular season Atlan c Coast Conference tle, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-record five wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. During his tenure, Virginia Tech crowned five conference champions and two all-americans. Senior heavyweight Mike Faust was named 2006 ACC Wrestler of the Year. Prior to taking the helm at Virginia Tech, Brands was an assistant coach at Iowa for 12 seasons (1993-2004). He helped the Hawkeyes to a 177-27 record, seven NCAA and eight Big Ten tles, while crowning 23 NCAA Champions, 73 all- Americans and 36 Big Ten Champions. He was named Na onal Wrestling Coaches Associa on Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000. As a compe tor, Brands won the 1996 Olympic freestyle gold medal at 136.5 pounds in Atlanta, GA. He also won a gold medal at the 1993 World Freestyle Championships in Toronto, two World Cup gold medals (1994, 1995) and was the 1995 Pan American Games champion. He won four U.S. Na onals tles (1993-96) and made four straight U.S. World or Olympic teams (1993-96). Along with his twin brother, Terry, Tom was named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year, John Smith Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler and Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year in 1993. He was inducted into wrestling s Hall of Fame in 2001. Brands was a four- me all-american at Iowa (1989-92). During his Hawkeye career, he won three NCAA tles and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the 1992 NCAA Championships. Also a three- me Big Ten champion, Brands won 95 percent of his matches at Iowa. His career mark of 158-7-2, included an undefeated season in 1991 (45-0). THIS WEEK Top-ranked Iowa (18-1, 5-0 Big Ten) will put its undefeated Big Ten dual mark on the line when it hosts two conference opponents this weekend. Iowa will wrestle #20 Indiana (12-7, 1-5 Big Ten) Friday at 7 p.m. and #9 Michigan (15-6, 2-3 Big Ten) Sunday at 8 p.m. Both matches will be held in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It will be the second mee ng for the Hawkeyes and Wolverines this season, as Iowa scored a 23-13 win in the NWCA/Cliff Keen Na onal Duals semifinals Jan. 13 in Cedar Falls. The Michigan dual will be a Black Out event, where all fans are encouraged to wear black clothing. It will also be Senior Night, Fan Apprecia on Night and 25 Years in Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be celebrated. Seniors Ma Fields (Hwt.) and Mark Perry (165) will be recognized, and fans will be eligible to win prizes and receive a free commemora ve meet program. Perry now holds a 2-1 lead his collegiate career series with Tannenbaum, winning the previous mee ng - 5-2 - at the 2007 Big Ten Championship finals. Borschel upset #2 Steve Luke, 3-2. The Marion, IA, na ve fought off several shots from Luke and converted on his own in the third period to score his third straight victory. Junior Charlie Falck (125) and sophomore Joe Slaton (133) got the dual off to an 8-0 start for Iowa with back-to-back major decisions. PERRY UNDERGOES KNEE SURGERY Senior 165-pounder Mark Perry has undergone knee surgery. The announcement came Jan. 24 from Head Coach Tom Brands. The S llwater, OK, na ve, had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks of ac on. Perry, a three- me all-american, has a career record of 89-15. He currently has a 13-2 record and is ranked first na onally. His nine pins, this season, are best on the team. The Hawkeyes beat Arizona State (36-3) Friday in Glendale, AZ, and Boise State (30-9) Sunday in Boise, ID, extending their winning streak to 11 matches.
