Maryland Street Indianapolis, IN 46225 317.532.3545 www.indyindians.com Columbus Clippers 0-0, 1st IL West RHP Joe Martinez (NR) Thursday, April 4, 2013 7:05 p.m. EDT Victory Field Indianapolis, Indiana Game #1 Home Game #1 LET S GET IT STARTED: The Indianapolis Indians begin their International League West Division title defense as they host division rival Columbus Clippers... The Tribe will have a tough act to follow after last season s 3-2 two-out walk-off win over Toledo in the Club s home opener on 4/13... Since the start of the Victory Field era (1996), the Indians own a 9-7 overall record during the season opener... Eight of Indianapolis nine Opening Day victories came during an eight-year streak from 1998-2005, with the ninth and most recent triumph occurring against tonight s opponent on 4/5/07 (6-1)... Overall, the Indians have gone 3-2 against Columbus on Opening Day, and are 2-1 when facing the Clippers in the season s first home game. HOME SWEET HOME: The Tribe has been tough to beat at Victory Field early in the season, posting a 12-5 record in the season s home opener, and a 6-2 record on Opening Day in Indianapolis... The Indians have also won four of their last six home openers, dating back to the 2007 season. TRIBE S TRAVELING TROUBLES: On the road, the Indians have gone 8-8 in the season s first game away from Victory Field, and 3-5 on Opening Day at opposing ballparks... The Tribe has dropped four of its previous five opening road games, dating back to 2008. TONIGHT S TRIBE STARTE LHP Andy Oliver toes the rubber for the Tribe in their 2013 season opener... The southpaw was acquired from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for C Ramon Cabrera on 12/5/2012... Oliver joins the Indians rotation after concluding the 2012 campaign as a reliever in Toledo s bullpen... He started 18 straight games last season before making nine of his final 10 appearances in relief... Overall in 2012, the lefty went 5-9 with a 4.88 ERA (64 ER in 118.0 IP) in 28 games (19 starts) for the Mud Hens... He dominated opposing hitters, holding opponents to a.235 average (103-for-438), the fourth-best mark in the DET organization, while also limiting leadoff batters to a.179 clip (17-for-95)... Indians fans will be glad to see Oliver pitching for the Tribe rather than against the Club, as he fanned a season-high tying nine on 4/13 at Victory Field last season in a no-decision in which he limited Indianapolis to just one earned run through 6.0 frames... He last faced Columbus on 8/22/12 and allowed three walks and one earned run in 0.2 IP... Through five total appearances (three starts) against the Clippers last season, Oliver went 2-1 with a 6.75 ERA (13 ER in 17.1 IP) and 16 strikeouts... Excluding his start vs. COL on 7/4 (8 ER in 2.1 IP), the southpaw recorded a 2-0 record with a 2.08 ERA (3 ER in 13 IP) in his other two starts against the Clippers. TONIGHT S CLIPPERS STARTE RHP Joe Martinez will make the start for Columbus tonight... The former Indians hurler pitched for both the Tribe and Pittsburgh Pirates during the 2010 season, after he was originally acquired from the San Fransisco Giants with OF John Bowker in exchange for LHP Javier Lopez... Last year, Martinez went 10-11 with a 5.39 ERA (93 ER in 155.1 IP) and 99 strikeouts in 27 starts for Pacific Coast League Champion Triple-A Reno, including tossing 7.0 shutout innings against the Omaha Storm Chasers in Game Three of the Championship Series... When pitching on the road, he posted a 5-7 record with a 5.05 ERA (43 ER in 76.2 IP)... The right-hander earned seven of his 10 wins in seven consecutive starts from 5/19-6/20, a span in which he paced all of Triple-A baseball in victories, while also posting a 3.68 ERA (18 ER in 44.0 IP)... Martinez also strung together three straight wins from 7/5-12, allowing a combined three earned runs during that span (1.53 ERA, 17.2 IP). FAMILIAR FACES: Indianapolis 2013 Opening Day roster features 10 players who appeared with the Tribe last season... This total includes six pitchers in RHPs Gerrit Cole, Phil Irwin, Kyle McPherson, Bryan Morris and Duke Welker, as well as LHP Kris Johnson... Also returning are INFs Matt Hague and Jordy Mercer, OF Alex Presley and C Tony Sanchez... Hague, Mercer and Presley are each back in Indianapolis for a third consecutive season... In sum, the ten players have appeared in 706 games with the Indians, and also thrown a combined 203.2 innings for the Tribe... Although they have yet to play in a game for Indianapolis, RHP Vic Black and INF Oscar Tejeda have each suited up for a Pittsburgh affiliate during their careers, and both saw action with Double-A Altoona in 2012. PROSPECTS-A-PLENTY: Seven of the top 30 prospects (as ranked by Baseball America) in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization will begin the 2013 campaign with Indianapolis... The list features the following prospects: RHP Gerrit Cole (No. 1), RHP Kyle McPherson (No. 7), C Tony Sanchez (No. 12), LHP Andy Oliver (No. 13), RHP Bryan Morris (No. 14), RHP Vic Black (No. 16) and RHP Duke Welker (No. 26)... Additional organizational prospect ratings by Baseball America include: Cole ( Best Fastball, Best Slider ), McPherson ( Best Control ) and Sanchez ( Best Defensive Catcher )... Cole is also ranked as the No. 7 overall prospect in all of Minor League Baseball... As of Opening Day, the Tribe s 2013 starting rotation will feature the No. 1, No. 7 and No. 13 prospects in the Bucs organization (Cole, Mcpherson and Oliver).
