www.wpa.org.za May 2013 Newsletter Editorial The change of season brought us to the end of the Track and Field competitions and to the start of the Cross Country leagues. This has affected everyone that is currently training as the sun is rising much later which impacts your training to early morning or late afternoon. A kind request to all members to pay attention to the clothing that you are wearing during your training runs. Please be advised to wear bright visible running apparel to prevent accidents. WPA hosted a very successful SA Senior Track & Field Championships in Stellenbosch with many WP athletes achieving personal bests and quality performances. The same was witnessed at the SA Junior and Youth Track & Field Championships. We congratulate the athletes who achieved medals and wish them all the best, may they be selected to participate in the upcoming Southern Region and African Championships. The Cross Country season started off with a bang at the Pinelands Cross Country Relay, the event was very well hosted and supported, we can expect a good season ahead. The very popular leagues proved in the past that it is a great club building program. The support received from all the participating club members reflects good spirit, strengthened and healthy relationships between the members during the different events. Road running is still active with events every weekend and the participating numbers depicts a general increase in numbers across the spectrum of events. The SA 10km Championships is scheduled to take place in May in Durban and we wish all the selected members all of the best. WPA was well represented at the Masters Championships that was hosted in Oudtshoorn. Congratulations to all that achieved excellent performances and medal winners at the events. Race walking will host a few events in the coming months and we urge the clubs to promote the dates to all their members. The growth in walking members within the province is increasing but all these members are not participating at all the events. The club administration and general increase in numbers proves that athletics in WPA is healthy and well supported. The WP club structure is active with only a few clubs showing zero growth. In general the future in WPA is very positive and in good spirits and we will continue to grow the sport. I quote from the Western Cape Minister of Sport Dr Ivan Meyer: If we got a common goal we can forget our differences and achieve success. Running Regards Jakes Jacobs

The race was won by Lebogang Shange for the second year in a row, in a time of 1.26.06. Wayne Snyman (1:26:19), silver medallist, qualified for the World Student Games to be held later this year. In third place, Olympian 50km race walker, Marc Mundell (1:31:24) proved that he was getting back into form after his knee operation last year. The ladies 20km race was won by the young South African talent, Anel Oosthuizen (1:44:40) who clinched her second South African medal this year, winning both the South African Junior Championships and the South African Senior Championships. In second place, Susan Swanepoel (South African 20km record holder) got the silver in 1:44;42 and Lesley Van Buuren (Masters athlete) clinched the bronze in 1:45:57, beating the senior field in fine form. Lesley also managed to break the South African Masters record with over 3 minutes.

Our Western Province champions were Ross McDonald (1:39:06) in 4 th position, now competing as a Veteran (40) and Sune Fincham (1:55:55) in 7 th position. By the time of distributing our Newsletter, the SA Masters Championships will have been held and we will bring you results next time. These highlights at the end of the track season signify the start of winter and our attention is directed towards the League walks to carry us through to the 50km Championships to be held in October. Although some running clubs do host walking races alongside their running races, non-league races (identified as walkers welcome races) will not have officials judging the walkers along the route and therefore do not contribute towards your League Point system. The League points go towards individual walkers, as well as the club so clubs are encouraged to get mass participation in the League walking events. Please note that in order to qualify for League walking prizes; walkers must be identifiable by wearing walker tags on the front and back of their vests, as well as their age tags. The next League race is UWC 10km on 1 June in Bellville South. The next WPA Race walking Grand Prix takes place on 18 May at Youngsfield Military Base and includes a 10km, 20km and 30km as well as a 5km, 3km and 1km races that cater for walkers as young as 8 years old! This is a perfect opportunity for walkers who are familiar with the correct race walking technique as well as young aspiring walkers to try their talents in a friendly, controlled environment (please remember; no long leggings). Keep on training and we will see you there. Our WPA Champions Ross McDonald and Sune Fincham in action in Stellenbosch. CAPE TOWN MARATHON & CAPE TOWN 10KM ONLINE ENTRIES OPEN FOR CAPE TOWN MARATHON & CAPE TOWN 10KM Online entries for the 2013 Cape Town Marathon have officially opened. That means it is the perfect time to enter and kick-start your marathon or 10km training programme. The marathon route offers elite athletes the chance to post a fast marathon time and the eight hour cut-off allows first timers and walkers the chance to complete the distance with no pressure. The event is a qualifier for the 2014 Comrades and Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon and offers participants a fast, flat route starting in Cape Town s city centre, taking runners out to Rondebosch before looping back to the City via the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point and the Green Point Common. The marathon and 10km start in Adderley Street at 06h30 on Sunday 22 September, the 10km has a two hour cut-off, so walkers are also welcome as they have ample time to complete the event and earn their medal. These events are open to everyone; fun runners, walkers, as well as serious runners are encouraged to come out and support these events, bring along their family and friends and enjoy the pre-event festivities. Participants are encouraged to enter online at: www.ctmarathon.co.za alternatively an entry form can be downloaded from the website. Entries close on 9 September 2013. WPA Development WP Kids Athletics 180 children from the WPA Kids Athletics Programme will be participating in the upcoming Cross Country Leagues. After a successful Kids Athletics League Programme, we are all eagerly awaiting the change of activity. WPA will be using the Cross Country season to document the performances of the children in order to compile comparative results against the 2012 season; we will keep the clubs posted on their results. We wish all the participating children and facilitators a fun filled, action packed season ahead.
