Terry Helms Manca racing Italy 2007 THE ROUTES outline the general Westward plan but totally open to the wind, fancy free and flexibility! Manca leaves about 1870 yachts behind in Barcolana 2007
Terry enjoying the helm of a classic 1930 wooden skiff on the Tamar River Tasmania where his father learned to sail! YOUR SKIPPER Terry was born and educated in Australia. He migrated to Canada where he spent a number of years as a high school teacher. He always wanted to go sailing! Growing up on an island and listening to the sound of the wind and waves at night created a close affinity for the sea. But it was not until 1977 that he first got a chance to take sailing lessons in Vancouver Canada. Shortly after that he bought his first yacht! An O Day 27 with a red hull and a gold mast! The sail number was 007. What a beauty. The hull was so light and thin she sailed very well. Soon Terry, after being nagged every weekend by a marina neighbor who also had an O Day 27, took up racing in PHRF with a passion! He now had match races! What fun! It took a year to learn racing but after that with a great team the trophies started arriving on a regular basis.
By 1986 the O Day was feeling a little tired and Terry jumped on a chance to by one of the first Beneteaus to arrive in Vancouver. Epicurious a First 32 became a great racer and cruiser on the West Coast. For 20 years she was the yacht to beat in her PHRF division. She was still in top shape after 20 summers of cruising and racing when, sadly she was sold in 2006! During this time Terry joined the CYA and with many years of sailing experience easily completed his CYA Instructor s License. He introduced many people to the art, fun and joy of sailing through racing, cruising and instruction. In 2004 Terry was invited to sail around The Black Sea in the KYRA Rally. This was 64 days 35 ports and six countries starting in Istanbul anti-clockwise around all the amazing countries of the Black Sea and return to Istanbul. On departure day a school of dolphins escorted the yacht into the Bosporus. What a magical moment! Terry enjoyed the wonderful Black Sea sailing, the food, culture and history so much that he was determined to return to Turkey and The Mediterranean! Happily Terry had a plan. He made some money from some good investments and went shopping for a replacement for Epicurious. In 2006 when he found Manca a Beneteau first 44.7 just one year old, (launched in 2005), it was a retirement dream come true. The yacht a very fast racer with all the comforts of a beautiful Bruce Farr designed cruiser; was exactly what Terry wanted. In 2007 the first port of call was Venice! Then two summers in Croatia and Slovenia. In May 2008 Terry sailed out of the Adriatic through the Corinthian Canal at dawn and into the Aegean! 850 miles later Manca landed in Turkey! Terry began a wonderful cruise of the Greek islands and the Turkish coast. The beauty, the history, food, wine and the myriad of bays and anchorages became a magnet. The compass pointed to Mamaris as a base for Manca until 2012. In April 2010 Manca sailed the 530 miles to Istanbul taking in a number of fishing villages along the coast of the Marmar Sea. In Istanbul Manca joined the Eastern
Mediterranean Yacht Rally sailing over 2001NM along the Turkish coast, Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria,Israel, Egypt and return, logging over 3700Nm. In 2011 many friends joined Terry to sail the Eastern Aegean. From April to November Manca was proudly and safely sailing those very precious guests. Now in 2012 Terry has many special friends sailing the wonderful Lycian coast, enjoying the wonderful hot dry summers: swimming, food, culture, history, beautiful landscapes, deep blue sea, diving, and photography! Magic! There are so many bays, inlets and places of interest one could spend a life time here but! In 2013 Manca will begin her magical amazing sail to St Lucia over 4000NM. Manca is now registered for the 2013 Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC 2013). This rally with about 200 entries will depart The Grand Canaries on November 24 2013. SUMMARY.
